Are there any conspiracy theories you believe in?

Inspired by another thread

I find conspiracy theories really interesting. I have never ‘believed’ any of them, more enjoy discussing them and how likely it seems that they could be true. I also think it’s more far fetched to believe that everything we have ever been told or ever will be told is the whole truth.

Are there any CTs you believe in? Lead me down a rabbit hole please!

This is a fairly recent podcast about JFK. I'm pretty persuaded that LHO had nothing to do with the assassination.

He did say he’s just a patsy. and was killed off before saying anything else.

I believe in the Barbarians at the Gate theory. Except, they’re not at the gate but are already among us, hence Friday’s attack in 🇩🇪.

What’s this all about then?

@Errors - you began this thread but don’t know anything ?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/12/2024 23:05

Oh and I have my very own small scale conspiracy theory.

I believe opticians, optometrists and the optical industry are deliberately attempting to market "myopia" as a worrying health condition which needs to be fought using more expensive lenses.

A friend whose son has always had glasses for his short sight told me very seriously that he has now been diagnosed with...myopia. She is genuinely worried about this and has bought the new lenses (heavily advertised on Mumsnet) which may or may not change the trajectory of his vision. But there is a definite effort to create alarm and anxiety about a very common and fairly benign condition with the goal of selling more profitable lenses.

I’m not entirely certain but I believe Courtney Love had something to do with it. Wasn’t there a guy who was hired by her as a PI and he got suspicious and devoted his life to trying to prove she was behind it. He found scraps of paper where she had practiced his hand writing (presume to fake his suicide note) and plenty have said that with the amount of Heroin in his system and the gun that was used that it would have been impossible for him to have died by his own hand

Hasn't something come out recently about his best friend being in on it?

queenofarles · 22/12/2024 23:07

I do believe that something really strange happened to MH370, the search was called off suddenly , it could be that they did eventually locate it , but decided not to share with public.

I suspect you're dealing with someone who either thinks the moon is a planet, or who doesn't understand the distinction.

A lot of conspiracy thinking derives from the fact that some topics require you to either have a certain amount of science education, or trust people who do. Conspiracy thinkers typically score very low on psychological measures of trust, and prefer their own intuitions and observations. Sadly, large amounts of the technology that make the modern world run are not directly accessible to our senses (radio waves, DNA, semiconductors, software, general relativity) and so we have to trust others to some extent. As Arthur C. Clarke wrote, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic".

Edited

That is correct in a way. I have very little trust if I cant see it myself. I believe there is a spiritual side to everything, and the fact that Hollywood and media mock Christianity makes me even more distrustful of mainstream media sources

Is the moon even a planet, or is it just a star that is closer to is than we realise? Do these millions of planets even exist? Space extends almost infinitively? Maybe/maybe not. Science education is also viewed by some as indoctrination and brainwashing.

This is a conspiracy theory thread so we are allowed to freely express our mistrust.

They still cant find plane MH370 ffs!

They aren't going to. There won't be a single piece bigger than an engine, and that's about the size of a single-decker bus. It took the better part of a century to find the Titanic, which was about 10,000 times bigger, and they only had to search a few thousand square miles, as opposed to a substantial fraction of the Indian Ocean.

Verbena17 · 22/12/2024 23:09

Ok, here’s my next one 😉…

The past 4+ yrs have basically been a movie 🍿.
Many people believe that DJT did not lose the 2020 election but instead, put emergency measures in place prior to the (fake) Sleepy Joe inauguration, for the ‘continuation of government’, in order to carry out the clearing up of the Deepstate.

In fact, many people believe DJT has been the CIC for this whole time….making it appear Sleepy Joe was the President when in fact, DJT and the military have been draining the very deep swamp, covertly.

Something to do with Washington DC not being the same country as the rest of the USA, which is true. Washington DC, The City of London & The Vatican have never been part of the countries in which they are located geographically.

Check out DJT’s speech where he explains ‘the Pause’.
Ive just tried to link it but it’s not copying

Thanks for the reply. We differ almost entirely on the substance, but it seems we have a point of agreement about the trust.

Can I ask why you have this low degree of trust? (That's if you know — we all have feelings and beliefs that we can't trace the origins of!)

It is niche, I admit. I suppose it is no different to the time Dove tried to invent the burning issue of "What do you do to reveal your underarms?" But somehow I think it is worse when quasi medical figures conspire to make parents feel they are risking their child's vision by not writing a blank cheque.

(And they got to you )

Btw I am fully aware myopia is short sightedness - that is my point. People aren't worried enough about short sightedness, so let's medicalise it.

I believe it was ‘landed’ at the US base on Diego Garcia & possibly resprayed but I have no idea where the passengers went.

There was a man who worked for IBM called Philip Wood. He was on that flight and sent a photo to his girlfriend. But it was black - no image….or so it seemed.
He supposedly hid his phone when getting off the plane, taking a photo in a solitary cell. However, the phone data showed it was taken from the island of Diego Garcia.

Who knows if it’s true!

I'm baffled by this kind of science rejecting attitude. Look up. The moon and the sun look approx the same size to us, hence one covering the other in an eclipse. The sun gives out heat. It is hot. It is a star. The moon gives out no heat. It is cold. It is not a star. The sun is much larger but is fuether away. I don't know how anyone can so willingly ignore basic everyday evidence.

Yes billions of planets exist, I feel it's not worth anyone's effort to explain the evidence base for that since it will be arbitrarily rejected.

Before I got to the end of your post, I was going to quote it with ‘always follow the money’

I think that simple sentence nails it.

I agree with all but the last of these.
i even agree with the last to some extent, the car manufacturers and industry as a whole are being absolutely crippled right now, I know as I work in it.
the government are trying to force us to sell electric cars but no one wants them, for every petrol or diesel we want to sell that’s over the tiny target we’re allowed to sell the manufacturers are fined obscene amounts making it practically a loss. There’s thousands of registered and unregistered petrol and diesel cars in stock but we’re not allowed to sell them. Whoever’s benefiting from it isn’t linked to the car industry because there’s factories closing down, mergers, whole brands going out of business, we used to make £700-2k per car, now we’re lucky if we make £300 per car, which doesn’t even cover the overheads which have tripled since pre covid. Everytime my boss calls I worry they’re going to make me redundant. He’s made huge losses for the first time in his 30+ year career.

Covid came from a lab.

Pretty sure that's long since been confirmed...

SereneCapybara · 22/12/2024 23:27

Errors · 22/12/2024 18:13

Hasn’t that been proven now?

I was told that right at the start of Covid by a colleague who had been working in China at a school quite near the lab. (The lab suddenly closed for three days - all staff went home...) Then all the pupils at her school got ill. When I told people what she'd witnessed they thought I had swallowed the kool aid.

And anyone who said this very thing 4 years ago was a conspiracy theorist.

Now all of a sudden, it’s received wisdom.

That’s how it works. Everything is a conspiracy theory….until it isn’t. And then it’s just something that everyone apparently always knew.

Mourningmorningsleep · 22/12/2024 23:29

Mountainhowl · 22/12/2024 22:48

Thanks for the fact check, I knew there had been several moon landings but couldn't remember the number so went with what Google told me 🤣

@Mountainhowl you were incorrectly corrected, there were also successful manned USSR Luna missions and very recently China's robotic landers in the Chang'e missions
