I just found my Christmas present and he’s messed up

Ok, so I’m grateful I’m getting a present but I’ll have to say that my DH is pretty crap at gifts. I think he’s just lazy. He told me there’s no shops near his office and he wouldn’t know what to get me. Well a few years back I went to his office in London to meet him and I literally walked past some of the best shops in the country.

Anyway, he’s bought me some sports gear off the internet. That’s great as I do a lot of fitness. However I’ve just found the bag. I went into a cupboard and it was on a shelf and I looked.

He’s bought me a jacket and a pair of running leggings in XL and I’m a M. I thought maybe this is an American size or other so I tried them on. They’re 3 sizes too big.

The receipt says there are 30 days to return and that takes it to 30 Dec.

I’m a bit disappointed that yet again I’ve got a useless present, but more practically I don’t want to be outside the return period.

Should I tell him I found them and they’re too big (YANBU) or suck it up, (YABU) smile and send it back as soon as the post office opens after Christmas…….and swap it for something I really want from that shop ;)

OP your DH sounds a bit dim if he doesn't even check the tickets in your clothes to see your size. It sounds like he's clueless so in future make it easier for him by putting things on a wish list and sending it to him. Then you'll get something you like. I sent my DH a link to a gold and sapphire pendant. I'm pretty sure I'll get it plus some surprises too.

Londoneye20 · 04/12/2024 17:39

Adults hunting around for presents and trying them on tho..🤷‍♀️

Needmorelego · 04/12/2024 17:40

@Londoneye20 the OP said she found them in the cupboard with the Christmas decorations - she wasn't hunting for them.

justasking111 · 04/12/2024 17:41

If I bought my husband clothes in the wrong size, he'd be puzzled that I didn't know his size.

I've had some unwanted gifts. A Fitbit because he likes his. A pair of mule slippers when I've never been able to wear mules for some reason which we've discussed. The ugliest coloured cape coat on the planet because he liked it . When I actually tried on the coat I wanted in the shop, in front of him gushing that I loved it.

JawsCushion · 04/12/2024 17:42

Send the stuff back yourself. Buy yourself what you want with the refund. Wrap it up and put it in the place you found the gym gear.

If you say so

Another reason why present buying should be banned between adults.
Now in this case especially it's sucked all the joy out of it and left you asking strangers what to do.

Why were you even looking?

I totally agree! I really don't understand why adults expect surprise gifts - or any gifts, come to think of it - at Christmas! Just seems a bit daft and unnecessary, to me.

What a stupid place for him to hide them.

BenditlikeBridget · 04/12/2024 17:56

Buy him some extra small condoms.

Why?

It's the thought that counts.....but it has to be a thoughtful thought, not a bloody massive track suit that would fit someone 2 sizes larger than yourself.

ChristmasCinchNotGrinch · 04/12/2024 15:40

FYI I wasn’t snooping. He actually put the package in the cupboard where we keep the Christmas decs, and guess what I was doing today on my day off 🤷‍♂️

I looked inside and held up the leggings and thought the arse on them looked massive but then I wondered if I was in denial at the size of my derrière, so I tried them on.

Edited

Surely that’s an easy one then, you just say ‘whole I was getting the decorations out I found some leggings, I just want to let you know that on the off chance that they are my Christmas present, they’re the wrong size and need to be changed for a medium. Just letting you know because if we wait till Christmas we might be too late and your money will be wasted

snotathing · 04/12/2024 18:00

I have one that's a bit like this, doesn't listen to a word I say if I'm hinting about my size etc but will then sigh like I'm being 'difficult' and ungrateful if I pointed out that his gift was the wrong size.

He's pissing me off today for many reasons.

Jc2001 · 04/12/2024 18:02

Do married adults still going for big gifts at Christmas? It feels a bit strange to me.

My partner and I tend to buy stuff we need throughout the year so at Christmas it's just a few stocking fillers. It's more about the time off work, seeing family and friends, the food and drink.

If you are going to buy big gifts then just tell each other what you want.

WreggGallace · 04/12/2024 18:03

ChristmasCinchNotGrinch · 04/12/2024 14:31

Yep, he can’t be arsed.

To get to his office he has to walk past a book shop, Monica Vidner, Oliver Bonas, Neom, Hotel Chocolat, Tiffany’s and loads of other shops, yet can’t think of anything to get me.

But back to the gym stuff. I’ll feel a bit bad saying I’ve found it. Believe it or not, ordering me something online is a lot more than he usually does 😝

Edited

Tell him you've found your secret santa present for the woman at work, because it cant be for me inthat size?

He's crap at presents? Bet he wasn't when courting you. Weaponised incompetence

Jabbabong · 04/12/2024 18:05

Perhaps they are for his extra large bit on the side.

Gowlett · 04/12/2024 18:05

I’ve bought my own presents as per. Asked for chocolates…
Hopefully he won’t leave it too late, and get the ones I want.

Of course she did. It’s entirely logical to hide a Christmas present with the Christmas decorations. Nobody would ever think of looking there at the beginning of December.

jannier · 04/12/2024 18:07

"I found this in the cupboard are you playing around I know it's not for me as I'm m not XL'

Gowlett · 04/12/2024 18:09

I don’t think it’s weaponised incompetence.
Plenty of men wouldn’t step inside the shops mentioned.

My fella would prefer to look online, for sure.
But, I don’t t want any random last minute gifts!

LadyLapsang · 04/12/2024 18:09

On the positive side, if he has paid full price and you return them in deadline you may get more bang for your bucks in the sale. Commiserations on having a partner somewhat lacking in this department. I once received a gift I wanted only to be billed in January as he had ordered on my account and overlooked that he had not paid!

DiduAye · 04/12/2024 18:09

Maybe it's a Love Actually situation and it's not your gift !

Elf36 · 04/12/2024 18:11

Technically you don't know it's for you do you.

So you say "who are the leggings for? I saw them today when decorating."

He says "for you"

You say "oh they aren't my size. Thanks for the thought though. You better return them before the return period expires, but actually I did have an idea I was going to suggest to you. This year I would really like.... (specific item)"

My DH is crap at gifts too. I just tell him and he does it. He shows love and care in other ways.

Needmorelego · 04/12/2024 18:11

@BIossomtoes huh? She said she was getting the decorations out. Presumably to put them up. That's not exactly going hunting for suprise pressies is it?

Gowlett · 04/12/2024 18:12

LadyLapsang, a good point about full price / sale.
I make sure to get deals, discount codes etc…

My chocolates were on offer for Black Friday.
Didn’t buy them myself, thought I was tempted.
