The teacher from Batley is still in hiding

Teacher Batley
His life ruined because a bunch of thugs decided they didn't like what he was teaching in his RE lesson.
This and the Labour MP's request for bhalsphey laws against those of the Abrahamic faith have made me concerned.

People should be free to offer an view against another's religion. It's scary that we are being a country where people thing being offended gives them a right to made death threats.

Batley Grammar School teacher felt “totally isolated” “abandoned” and “suicidal” due to inadequate support from relevant agencies.

An official review, due to be published on Monday 25th March, 2024, is set to recommend the banning of protests outside schools, following a concerning incident where a teacher was forced into hidi…

The way this was dealt with was craven:

the upset and offence this has caused is understandable, but it was also predictable. I am pleased that the school has recognised it was inappropriate and apologised for the offence caused.

I can't believe they apologised for it. If you want to live in the UK then you're going to have to accept freedom of speech.

I highly doubt blasphemy laws will be brought in, we've just got rid off ours.

DanielaDressen · 03/12/2024 06:15

He needs putting in witness protection with an identity change if the threat against him is so high. Maybe with a different name and in a different area he could go back to teaching.

obviously in an ideal world he wouldn’t need to. That poor teacher in France who was decapitated…hasn’t the girl admitted she made his comments up??? Horrific.

Thevelvelletes · 03/12/2024 06:49

How is religion allowed to cause these issues in this day and age?
Worship whichever make-believe deity you want it saddens me when the zealots take their beliefs to extremes.

KierSnollygoster · 03/12/2024 06:51

I think this is a good example of everything that's wrong in Britain today.

Rhinomania · 03/12/2024 06:51

It’s staggering that they apologised.

inamarina · 03/12/2024 11:31

I agree, OP. It’s absolutely ridiculous and highly concerning at the same time. No religion should be above criticism.

PotOfViolas · 03/12/2024 11:35

He's probably well aware what happened to the teacher in France, Samuel Paty who was beheaded.

It's terrifying.

Would you be quick to give up your whole life, your name, everyone you know? It's a sort of civil death.

But he’s in hiding anyway 🤷‍♀️. He would benefit from state support for an identity change? Maybe not as strict as a full on never see your family again identity change. But support for a new name, cover story, new exam certificates in his new name so he can work, etc. no, i wouldn’t like it but I’d be scared about the consequences of being found…..i wouldn’t want to get beheaded.

I do not want anti-blasphemy laws in the UK.

Who gets to decide what is blasphemous?
Are they going to give the police sufficient funds to investigate the accused people?
Are those accused of blasphemy going to be given protection to avoid the situation of this poor teacher?
If someone falsely accuses someone of blasphemy are they going to be prosecuted and made to pay the person they defamed to enable them to start their life again somewhere else and remain financially whole?

To be applied equally the laws will have to apply to Jedi, Pastafarians (who worship the Great Flying Spaghetti Monster), the Church of Satan, and to any kook who wants to start their own cult. It will be a mess.

MrsPeregrine · 03/12/2024 11:47

If you voted for Labour then you can really complain so 🤷‍♀️

Ponoka7 · 03/12/2024 11:52

He put up offensive caricatures during a religious lesson. He fucked about and found out, quite frankly. An Inman met with the Head and went through what happened. They started protesting when the Teacher wasn't going to be sacked. The Teacher wanted to stir up hatred and that's what he's done. He should be bared from Teaching. He obviously doesn't know what is appropriate in a classroom. FYI I didn't agree with the people being jailed whose offences were online during the Southport riots.

What does that mean? This happened during the Tory party being in power, which they were since 2011.

heartbroken22 · 03/12/2024 11:54

He decided to use a cartoon from a magazine that insulted a specific group of people. It wasn't people not liking what he was teaching. He should have done stand up in a comedy setting not bring it into school and insult children. Time and place. You wouldn't use disabled jokes and bring them into a school setting.

Wellingtonspie · 03/12/2024 11:55

People should be allowed to have their opinions on any religion. If one can be joked about and mocked all should be free to be joked about and mocked if desired.

Worrying about being killed because of a picture of say Jesus shouldn’t be a thing.

Yes I know this one isn’t Jesus but Jesus is fair game aways….

I've had posts baned for what I've said about aspects of certain cultures/religions. However this is about someone being exceptionally offensive. I'm from Liverpool. We now have anti tragedy chanting laws. Nine were arrested on Sunday during the Liverpool vs Man City. We have hate speech laws and laws which covers behaviour that causes alarm. This classroom incident shouldn't have been ignored. It's either covered by the law, or expect your face punched in. It isn't ok for a Teacher to be an offensive fuckwit.

Oh I must have missed the Tories helping this teacher. Did he go back into hiding after Labour was elected then?

If it was offensive the police should have done something. In this case we have mob justice which has ruined this man's life and that of his family.
It mob rule.
Whats the punishment for those who can't hang offensive things as football games? A caution or a fine?

Being a teacher in that part of the UK is challenging. (If you are a woman it is extremely hard due to the sheer lack of respect and the refusal by boys to follow any instruction from women). Unless you have experienced it you wouldn't believe it. I do think the teacher was naïve to even mention the subject because he should have known what would happen.

It would have been weird to sack the teacher when the lesson had been taught in previous years and was approved by the senior leadership at the school.

And besides, the issue isn't whether sacking would be reasonable. It's whether death threats are (which they aren't).

Why should the teacher be sacked?

He was teaching a class on religion. He has a good percentage of Muslim pupils in his class. He chose a offensive caricature to use. If it was a sexist or racist caricature, posters would be calling for him to be sacked and he would have broken laws and policies. It's a serious misjudgement at the least. He should have met with the Iman and explained his reasoning, then gone before a teaching panel. You can hold what views you want, but keep them out of a classroom.
