The teacher from Batley is still in hiding

Nicetrynigel · 03/12/2024 05:55

Teacher Batley
His life ruined because a bunch of thugs decided they didn't like what he was teaching in his RE lesson.
This and the Labour MP's request for bhalsphey laws against those of the Abrahamic faith have made me concerned.

People should be free to offer an view against another's religion. It's scary that we are being a country where people thing being offended gives them a right to made death threats.

Batley Grammar School teacher felt “totally isolated” “abandoned” and “suicidal” due to inadequate support from relevant agencies.

An official review, due to be published on Monday 25th March, 2024, is set to recommend the banning of protests outside schools, following a concerning incident where a teacher was forced into hidi…

The way this was dealt with was craven:

the upset and offence this has caused is understandable, but it was also predictable. I am pleased that the school has recognised it was inappropriate and apologised for the offence caused.

I can't believe they apologised for it. If you want to live in the UK then you're going to have to accept freedom of speech.

I highly doubt blasphemy laws will be brought in, we've just got rid off ours.

I especially can't believe they apologised, when the lesson was one that was on the syllabus and had been taught before. There is no right not to be offended.

As an aside, these issues aren't going away. Muhammad is the most popular baby name. Islam presumably is a fast growing religion and church attendance declines. In 100 years things will really change.

Can you understand why that would make some people uncomfortable, when you state it on a thread about people having to hide for their lives due to not being respectful enough of Islam?
It sounds threatening.

I think it's meant to be a warning.

Grammarnut · 10/12/2024 18:27

OctoberOctopus · 08/12/2024 18:33

"I mean, I don't know what the Qur'an precisely says but it is a rudimentary fact that you DON'T picture Muhammad.

But it shouldn’t matter in a Western, non Islamic country what the Quran says when it comes to deciding what is and isn’t acceptable behaviour whin this society."

Why the heck do some religious people think they get to dictate to others who don't believe in their God what is ok. Stop pandering to this nonsense. Stop rolling over and submitting. Its a bloody picture, no one should be threatened over a picture. So bloody sensitive and demanding. Enough is enough.

Exactly. We cannot/must not be expected or told to obey the rules of a religion not ours. A Muslim isn't supposed to depict Mohammed, but anyone else can.

The most recent report that I could find said that he'd requested a change of identity.

😔

Do you know if he's getting any kind of support?

Just because someone is offended it doesn't mean everyone has to bow down to them. I don't demand their life when a Muslim says for God sake or Christ sake. Tolerance works in both directions.

And again. Nobody is saying those making threats are at all correct. Just that the issue could have been avoided had the RE teacher shown enough sense not to show an image that some of his community may find deeply offensive.

You sort of are validating the death threats and everything else, implying some people are less than animals and must KILL everything contrary to their base persuasions.

I'm sure the teacher has been far more materially offended than everyone else involved in this. Would you be willing to contribute to the expenses he's had to go through so far?

Gtfto2024 · 10/12/2024 21:02

Death threats could have been avoided if the community had acted like reasonable, rational human beings.

Nothing can justify them. It says a lot about your character that you keep trying.

The thread is coming to an end.

Would you set up a fundraiser for a teacher who's been internally displaced, and offered no help or support by his own state from the threats of death and decapitation on the part of common criminals who have yet to be prosecuted?

Edit: please let's @ARealitycheck respond before the thread is closed.

Muslim people are not savages or rabid dogs unable to do anything other than bite. They choose to picket a school, get violent and issue death threats (or actually commit murder) the whole issue can easily be avoided if they just choose to behave better.

They could be rent-a-mob, the equivalent of the rioters earlier this year.
It will all die down.

I can't find the report I referenced. This Daily Mail report has the same quotations. This spokesman for the parents is blaming the media:

"Yunus Lunat, a prominent local lawyer who acted as spokesman for Muslim parents at the time of the incident, said: ‘The teacher is leading a new life under another identity somewhere far from here. But even if he was to come back to Batley, I can assure you that his life would not be in danger.
‘We’ve all moved on, everything is calm and has been settled after the initial furore. It’s a shame that the teacher concerned did not have the confidence to allow a mediated return to work. That is what the community wanted to achieve but that got drowned out by the media and political frenzy.’"

Teacher STILL in hiding nearly two years after suspension

The teacher, who is in his late 20s, showed the controversial image to children at Batley Grammar School in West Yorkshire in March 2021, sparking heated protests by parents and activists.

Edit that with SOME muslim people.

The incident was in March 2021. How long do you think it will take to 'die down'?

How many years after the fatwa was the attack on Salman Rushdie?

Do you think the teacher can ever be sure that he is safe?

sillything · 10/12/2024 21:44

By the means of logic and reading the hateful rethoric you just posted. Have you absolutely no shame whatsoever?

Are you setting up a Gofundme on his behalf right now?

Edit that with SOME muslim people.

If you think that only some Muslim people are not savages or rabid dogs unable to do anything other than bite. What kind of low opinion do you have of the rest? That's an outrageous statement to make. Of course all Muslim people are not savages or rabid dogs unable to do anything other than bite.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 10/12/2024 22:25

The issue shouldn't have to be avoided though. That's what's wrong, not showing the images.
We should be making a point in UK society of colluding with this stuff.

People should have freedom to follow their religion, and absolutely zero freedom to impose it.

You are correct, I had actually replied to the incorrect post earlier. My point was meant to be that only very few muslim people act inappropriately.

Avoiding posting something that has a likelihood of offending your local community isn't colluding with anything. It is simple respect.

Show some shame for the racism of no expectations, and either post a fundraiser for the teacher or don't post at all.

I can't agree here. Not when a man is in hiding because he "disrespected" a minority religion in a country with no blasphemy laws.

The "local community" could always try respecting UK culture and maybe not threatening the people that teach their children with death?

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11830621/Teacher-suspended-showing-pupils-cartoon-Prophet-Mohammed-hiding.html

How absolutely grim and terrifying. He's not even 30, and he's been internally displaced by - I think this is the correct nomenclature - terrorists.

"Akooji Baadat, an official from Batley’s Snowdon Street Mosque, said: ‘Both sides have learnt lessons from this painful incident. The community has forgiven this teacher, we’ve got nothing against him, and he has nothing to worry about if he was to return to Batley.
‘But when something like this happens there’s always a danger of retaliation. Things have cooled down, we’ve all moved on and the teacher does not need to live in fear, but you can never tell.’"

How very awful. Akooji, who doesn't need to be afraid and can show his name in the media freely, hasn't taken up any responsibility and still hints at retaliation.

Notaflippinclue · 10/12/2024 23:01

You don't get it that British culture means we can show the Popes arse and Mohamed's chops without any repercussions apart from a mild rebuke - death threats! Cor blimey O'riley - we mustn't ever ever succumb to these threats and religious nonsense
