Rachel Reeves lied on her CV was not an “Economist”

AIBU - it’s OK to lie to get ahead

AINBU - it’s bad RReeves very Publicly lied about her prior work. We are right to feel annoyed by this lie.

saw this headline and am feeling really disappointed. Think Rachel Reeves needs to tell public exactly her job title.
She changed job title from Economist, to “Retail Banking”
An Economist at a Bank, is a clear and specific job, it’s a economic research position. A good experience for her current position.

”Retail Banking” - is not a job title … she could have been doing anything in a branch from Bank Teller, to Branch manager, or working in back office operations putting bank notes in the plastic bags or in HR.

So, she hasn't retrospectively altered her CV following the election?

Ratherubbish · 16/11/2024 13:00

So...

Nothing in Daily mail can be true. Must be Tory HQ. They made Reeves change her LinkedIn CV.

If someone on the other team exaggerated about their CV then it is ok that someone on my team does it too.

Someone who graduated from a high ranking university must be brilliant and hence be whoever whatever they claimed they were.

Ok.....

They got the story from Guido fawkes this is from a bbc news article After graduating, Reeves took on a role as an economist at the Bank of England.
She worked on the central bank's Japan desk, looking at the country's attempts to come out of stagnation in the 1990s.

Have any of us seen her CV is it hers

twomanyfrogsinabox · 16/11/2024 13:02

I'm not sure what the definition of an economist is. Someone with a degree in Economics? Is there a professional body you can belong to? It's not like being a Doctor or a Lawyer where specific qualifications or training are required. If you work in that field you can use that term I would think.

Michelle12A · 16/11/2024 13:03

Littlemissgobby · 16/11/2024 13:00

You do realise that daily mail has just taken it from Guido. Fawkes, which is a terrible website. It's f right-wing, s*** website. And this is taken from a BBC article about her
So I don't know who I believe but i'm telling you what it's not guidofawkes

'You want me to consider if I'm politically inconsistent based off a premise that you think I may be politically inconsistent with no evidence to suggest that I might be? 😂'

I don't care that much. I just think that when you're bitching about someone being much more junior than they claim, it's interesting to see that it is a) universal for all politicians who are all liars whatever the party and b) that men (and particularly conservative) men don't get called on it at all, no matter how blindingly incompetent they are.

Yeah, when you decide in advance that somebody who disagrees with you on one thing must then disagree with you on all things then you are fighting with shadows.

Couldyounot · 16/11/2024 13:06

I work with people who previously worked with her at BoE. She isn't lying. Try harder next time.

Notonthestairs · 16/11/2024 13:06

"In her Mansion House speech on Thursday evening, Ms Reeves told guests: 'Before entering politics, I worked as an economist at the Bank of England. And then in financial services.'

Where is the lie?

Chan9eusername · 16/11/2024 13:06

Ive changed my cv several times. Its normal to tailor it to a job. At different times I've had more/less on my linkedin too, or drawn attention to different aspects of my experience.

This is completely normal. Someond probably came along and said "Rachel there's more public attention on your working history, get someone to make sure your linkedin is complete/has enough detail".

WestwardHo1 · 16/11/2024 13:07

What was George Osborne's degree? Remind me.

I'm no Reeves fan, however this is a clear attempt by the DM and the DT to smear her.

Look at the headlines on the DT every day and you will see endless endless articles from their "commentators" about how we're doomed under Labour. It's really tedious.

And I say that as someone who has never voted Labour in my life.

TeenLifeMum · 16/11/2024 13:07

My brother did an internship at the Bank of England and says everyone made their own tea. Seems people are always keen to talk down a woman’s achievements.

Littlemissgobby · 16/11/2024 13:08

So I have seen this in 2 news sources, 1B in the daily mail and the other one being a daily express. If you are getting your news from them, particular papers give you head a bloody wobble and get some better sauces

It wasn't until I started reading Mumsnet that realised how much women really hate other women and take pleasure in dragging each other down.

This is unfortunate so true.

TheJumperMan · 16/11/2024 13:12

I don't think these kind of articles would be written if she was a Tory man with the same education and work experience.

To think she is now running the economy should send shivers down the spine.

bRinG bAcK kWa$1 !!!!!!!!

A lying, incompetent, unqualified socialist at the treasury. You couldn’t make this shit up.

And yet ... you have.

When he hears the word "socialist" in reference to the current UK Labour Party, my Rottweiler gets up and howls along with the Internationale. And then goes and Googles "Какая погода сегодня в Новосибирске?"

This is why Labour and Starmer keep banging on about the first female chancellor nonsense. Even if she was any good, the first female chancellor thing is a nonsense because we have had three women in the top job above chancellor already.

Pick me.

It sounds like, she basically made tea for the economists at BoE as an intern or something. Like when someone washes dishes at a restaurant for a summer job but calls themselves a Michelin star chef.

Also as the rumours go, she was pretty crap while she was there.

This is a prime example of why the left needs to keep resorting to identity politics. Because they’ve got nothing else to show. No actual credentials, competence or experience. The government is entirely made up of people who’ve never done real wealth creating jobs, and basically ripped off the public in Mickey Mouse public sector jobs.

Rachel Reeves will kill what’s left of the country’s economy. She is absolutely useless, you wouldn’t pay her to manage your children’s pocket money.

@hettie this answer from @Ytcsghisn is spot on. Would you consider taking your own advice and checking that the information you choose to believe is actually accurate?

She's not managed the decimate the economy quite like her predecessors ( eg Kwasi Keoteng) ....

It's worth mentioning that other Chancellors haven't exactly had sterling careers in finance before or after their tenures, so why you expect RR to is a puzzle.

GlitterBallss · 16/11/2024 13:15

I thought it was pretty well known that she was never an economist at the B of E.

Her degree is in economics but that doesn't mean she was employed there as an economist.

Wasn't she there for a very short time after graduating?

The lack of critical thinking, prejudice and hate shown on this thread is why the UK will keep going to the dogs. Anybody even slightly competent will be driven out.

I might not agree with how her experience has been sold but a) She didn't actually lie about it and b) compared to her predecessors she's definitely more qualified.

I work in FS and the job titles are a mess.... Retail banking may be a more appropriate description of her role rather than 'economist' but that doesn't mean she was in an admin role or doing work completely unrelated to the 'economist' skillset, which is well a knowledge of the economy. As opposed to making tea.

Also it's 2024 who the hell pays someone just to make tea anyway. Everyone makes their own.

We get the politicians we deserve.

user44221 · 16/11/2024 13:17

And then there was the time she ran the Ponzi scheme under a fake name while in government. Oh, right, that was Grant Schapps...
