Rachel Reeves lied on her CV was not an “Economist”

AIBU - it’s OK to lie to get ahead

AINBU - it’s bad RReeves very Publicly lied about her prior work. We are right to feel annoyed by this lie.

saw this headline and am feeling really disappointed. Think Rachel Reeves needs to tell public exactly her job title.
She changed job title from Economist, to “Retail Banking”
An Economist at a Bank, is a clear and specific job, it’s a economic research position. A good experience for her current position.

”Retail Banking” - is not a job title … she could have been doing anything in a branch from Bank Teller, to Branch manager, or working in back office operations putting bank notes in the plastic bags or in HR.

She was very liberal with company expenses when she worked in retail banking as well

How do you know that

I actually AM out running … whilst doing “economics” … if having an Economics degree means that you are an Economist in all you do. then right now, I am “running economics” in my area.

So far, majority posts indicate that MN is NOT in support of Lying about previous jobs.

People here seem to be more interested in arguing about whether she made tea than whether she did work that reflect her claim as an economist

ByMerryKoala · 16/11/2024 12:38

Okay, I get that. But then why is there evidence of retrospectively stepping back on the claims that she made on her earlier CV. One which was paraded around as an assurance that she was uniquely positioned to wrangle the BoE into useful sympathy with the country's needs?

If she now thinks that she had exaggerated her role in the machine that seems duplicitous.

Chan9eusername · 16/11/2024 12:41

it looks like this is the single output from her on that website you quoted

Its the single publically available/published output. How much of the work you produce is on the internet for all to read?

It says right there that she was working in the structural economics analysis division.

CurlewKate · 16/11/2024 12:42

@Disappointedagain22 Sources please.

rwalker · 16/11/2024 12:44

can’t stand her but not bothered about this

but Intrigued if she has changed it I would presume she’s worried about being called out on it

Ratherubbish · 16/11/2024 12:48

@Chan9eusername you said that this is Tory hq campaign to discredit Reeves, strong words! I am just saying it's a single published output and hence is limited as evidence to support her credentials.

runningpram · 16/11/2024 12:48

With a PPE degree and a masters from LSE you are not going to be making the tea - stop spouting such sexist bilge. It would have been useful you’d given Kwasi’s qualifications the same level of scrutiny!

Tbh, when she said she was an economist at the Bank of England, I'd assumed she was a head honcho not fresh out of uni. I'm not saying she was running coffee errands but this idea that she would understand the beating heart of the institution and would navigate the nation in synch with this beast seems over-egged from the confines of the Japan desk and a secondment to the embassy in Washington.

Like when Dominic Raab said he was a solicitor at Linklaters and had been involved in loads of high pressure deals. Strangely he moved to the government legal service almost as soon as he finished his training contract. The deals he was 'involved' in were all while he was a trainee. How odd that the Daily Mail didn't comment on that.

Yes.

Am I suppose to be defending Dominic Raab? 🤔

Kool4katz · 16/11/2024 12:52

I love how desperate the Tory’s have become since Labour got back into power.

Oh how we laughed. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Littlemissgobby · 16/11/2024 12:54

So daily mail now going after her CV oh wow and we wonder why trump got voted in and reform to. The fact remains that majority of the press and influence be that elon musk twitter in uk and America is to the right. And then we wonder why folks get influenced by saying things like this which turns out not to be true

CitrineRaindropPhoenix · 16/11/2024 12:54

@ByMerryKoala

No you're not expected to defend Dominic Raab, just perhaps consider whether you're being inconsistent based on political affiliation.

KirstenBlest · 16/11/2024 12:55

The Daily Mail is also known as the Daily Liar.

ruffler45 · 16/11/2024 12:57

Even so She is probably the highest qualified/experienced member of the cabinet LOL

Littlemissgobby · 16/11/2024 12:57

So they got three news source from fucking Guido fawkes a right wing website oh yes that's gonna be truthful on don't like that Guido they have lied before

ByMerryKoala · 16/11/2024 12:58

You want me to consider if I'm politically inconsistent based off a premise that you think I may be politically inconsistent with no evidence to suggest that I might be? 😂

Aduvetday · 16/11/2024 12:58

Hateam · 16/11/2024 12:04

It wasn't until I started reading Mumsnet that realised how much women really hate other women and take pleasure in dragging each other down.

Depends. If you’re a Labour MP who has lied - they all supportive. If you’re a successful woman who earns over 6 figures. You’re universally hated and expected to bankroll the majority of MN to post all day.

Michelle12A · 16/11/2024 12:58

It doesn’t matter weather you think she made tea or not.
she changed her job on her CV from economist to retail banker, she lied.

Haroldwilson · 16/11/2024 13:00

What sexist twaddle is this?

She's been shadow chancellor for aeons, now she's chancellor. Who gives a fuck about job titles? And you could be an economist in retail banking.

In contrast to, eg, Boris Johnson making up lies about the eu and falsifying quotes, kwasi and truss trashing the economy in ten mins flat, and whatever hellscape leader they've got now...

Ratherubbish · 16/11/2024 13:00

So...

Nothing in Daily mail can be true. Must be Tory HQ. They made Reeves change her LinkedIn CV.

If someone on the other team exaggerated about their CV then it is ok that someone on my team does it too.

Someone who graduated from a high ranking university must be brilliant and hence be whoever whatever they claimed they were.

Ok.....

You do realise that daily mail has just taken it from Guido. Fawkes, which is a terrible website. It's f right-wing, s*** website. And this is taken from a BBC article about her
So I don't know who I believe but i'm telling you what it's not guidofawkes
After graduating, Reeves took on a role as an economist at the Bank of England.

She worked on the central bank's Japan desk, looking at the country's attempts to come out of stagnation in the 1990s.

CitrineRaindropPhoenix · 16/11/2024 13:01

'You want me to consider if I'm politically inconsistent based off a premise that you think I may be politically inconsistent with no evidence to suggest that I might be? 😂'

I don't care that much. I just think that when you're bitching about someone being much more junior than they claim, it's interesting to see that it is a) universal for all politicians who are all liars whatever the party and b) that men (and particularly conservative) men don't get called on it at all, no matter how blindingly incompetent they are.
