Rachel Reeves lied on her CV was not an “Economist”

AIBU - it’s OK to lie to get ahead

AINBU - it’s bad RReeves very Publicly lied about her prior work. We are right to feel annoyed by this lie.

saw this headline and am feeling really disappointed. Think Rachel Reeves needs to tell public exactly her job title.
She changed job title from Economist, to “Retail Banking”
An Economist at a Bank, is a clear and specific job, it’s a economic research position. A good experience for her current position.

”Retail Banking” - is not a job title … she could have been doing anything in a branch from Bank Teller, to Branch manager, or working in back office operations putting bank notes in the plastic bags or in HR.

She was very liberal with company expenses when she worked in retail banking as well

Do you have a link to the article, please?

I don't think there is such a strict job definition as you are implying - given how liberal our business is with job titles

hettie · 16/11/2024 11:45

I am assuming this "information" has come to you from a filtered "news" feed? Because as well as working for the Halifax she was also an economist at the Bank of England. So what you're saying makes no sense. No lies have been told....
If you read something that gets the blood pressure up it's always worth a quick triangulation to see if other sources are saying the same thing. Then you can save yourself the agro of getting wound up about nothing.

Ytcsghisn · 16/11/2024 11:46

It sounds like, she basically made tea for the economists at BoE as an intern or something. Like when someone washes dishes at a restaurant for a summer job but calls themselves a Michelin star chef.

Also as the rumours go, she was pretty crap while she was there.

To think she is now running the economy should send shivers down the spine. A lying, incompetent, unqualified socialist at the treasury. You couldn’t make this shit up.

This is why Labour and Starmer keep banging on about the first female chancellor nonsense. Even if she was any good, the first female chancellor thing is a nonsense because we have had three women in the top job above chancellor already.

This is a prime example of why the left needs to keep resorting to identity politics. Because they’ve got nothing else to show. No actual credentials, competence or experience. The government is entirely made up of people who’ve never done real wealth creating jobs, and basically ripped off the public in Mickey Mouse public sector jobs.

Rachel Reeves will kill what’s left of the country’s economy. She is absolutely useless, you wouldn’t pay her to manage your children’s pocket money.

Politician tells lies, what a surprise!

cakeorwine · 16/11/2024 11:49

What do you mean by lied on her CV?

I wasn't aware MPs used a CV to apply for jobs?

Or are you just doing a click bait headline?

Are you saying that she applied for jobs and claimed to be an economist but she wasn't?

I have a feeling you're not going to return to this thread though. But I could be wrong

You mean double checking, looking at context...

Steady on. This is the internet

Source is the Daily Mail. Shocked face

A colleague of mine worked with her at the Bank of England. She was definitely an economist, and also apparently pretty good at her job and a nice enough person.

Edited to add: fun fact, Matt Hancock was also there in the same new graduate class

Chan9eusername · 16/11/2024 11:52

I know what her career was pre politics and I'm ok with it

The vast majority of politicians from all the major parties have had fuck all actual career doing anything else. I do think that is an issue. I'd like a health secretary who's worked in a medical role in the nhs for 15-20 years, a chancellor who's worked in accountancy or tax or economics or something.

But its not limited to rachel reeves. She is a competent chancellor and is doing a good job imho

Tory hq need to fuck off with these desperate campaigns to discredit.

If you want to win the next election - look within. You won't win voters by slagging off the other parties or trying to convince people they're doing a bad job. Focus on what you would do and why its worth voting for. You aren't doing that at the moment and its why no one likes you.

ByMerryKoala · 16/11/2024 11:55

Tbh, when she said she was an economist at the Bank of England, I'd assumed she was a head honcho not fresh out of uni. I'm not saying she was running coffee errands but this idea that she would understand the beating heart of the institution and would navigate the nation in synch with this beast seems over-egged from the confines of the Japan desk and a secondment to the embassy in Washington.

Chan9eusername · 16/11/2024 11:56

Ive only heard that she's terrifically bright.

Rachel Reeves will kill what’s left of the country’s economy. She is absolutely useless, you wouldn’t pay her to manage your children’s pocket money.

I would. I agree with her policies.

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/11/2024 11:56

Meh. Economist can be a job title but it is not protected title.

There are Heads of Economics in organistions who barely have more academic background in economics than I do.

hettie · 16/11/2024 11:57

I cannot believe that on a site primarily aimed at women we are trying to undermine the achievements of the first female chancellor by saying she made the tea!
She worked for the bank of England for 6 years as an economist in the structural economic analysis division, she wrote papers (you can find them if you look).
Makes sense it was daily mail...
Look if by the end of the parliament the economy has gotten worse then fine judge her by her performance but this really is not a good look ...

Chan9eusername · 16/11/2024 11:59

Tbh, when she said she was an economist at the Bank of England, I'd assumed she was a head honcho not fresh out of uni.

She's got a masters in economics from LSE and spent 6 years working at the Bank of England. Its perfectly legitimate that she describes herself as an economist.

Given that she became an MP in 2010 at the age of only 31 its not likely she'd been head honcho anywhere, is it.

cakeorwine · 16/11/2024 11:59

OP has not come back

Strange that.

PandoraSox · 16/11/2024 12:01

Hunt had a very solid career in finance before becoming Chancellor.

Didn't he? 🤔

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/11/2024 12:01

@hettie Exactly - Jeremy Hunt was a TEFL teacher, marmalade salesman and PR in his pre politics life.

Also the Chancellor doesn't do to all the economicsing on their own- there are loads of wonks at HMT to crunch the numbers.

Lovelydovey · 16/11/2024 12:02

Definitely an economist - I worked with her.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 16/11/2024 12:03

Lovelydovey · 16/11/2024 12:02

Definitely an economist - I worked with her.

And yet others who also claimed to have work with her say she basically made the tea.

Hard to know who is telling the truth.

Chan9eusername · 16/11/2024 12:04

Ha jeremy hunt has what i think is politely termed a "portfolio career" eg he didnt stick with anything long & no, none of it was economics.

Management consultancy, teaching english in Japan, various failed ventures, a PR agency and an educational course database company.

I'd definitely rather have Reeves!!

Birdscratch · 16/11/2024 12:04

I loathe the way politics has become.

It wasn't until I started reading Mumsnet that realised how much women really hate other women and take pleasure in dragging each other down.
