Rachel Reeves lied on her CV was not an “Economist”

AIBU - it’s OK to lie to get ahead

AINBU - it’s bad RReeves very Publicly lied about her prior work. We are right to feel annoyed by this lie.

saw this headline and am feeling really disappointed. Think Rachel Reeves needs to tell public exactly her job title.
She changed job title from Economist, to “Retail Banking”
An Economist at a Bank, is a clear and specific job, it’s a economic research position. A good experience for her current position.

”Retail Banking” - is not a job title … she could have been doing anything in a branch from Bank Teller, to Branch manager, or working in back office operations putting bank notes in the plastic bags or in HR.

You seem very angry. Why?

Quite the contrary, I just get annoyed when despite what RR is undoubtedly going to do to this country , mn possy is so willing to talk utter rubbish ,about compliance departments for retail banks?!? And then check Barclays Chief compliance officer in Google to substantiate rubbish.

poetryandwine · 17/11/2024 14:08

The fact remains that LSE has been one of the world’s top Economics programmes for a long time now. It is quite mathematically orientated and rigourous.

I will look at the LK clip but I too wonder about your tone throughout your posts, OP. Objective it is not.

Show ys your crystal ball, and describe your qualifications. I daresay I can handle the maths

Nancy1906 · 17/11/2024 13:59

You can be mickey mouse as far as this place is concerned.

Pp can say whatever she wants . Go and check the laura kuenssberg program where there was a full fledged BoE ex employee saying she had a shit ass junior job there and the Labour dame say next to him agreeing.

Far too many LK clips come up when you search for a discussion about RR. If you want to post a link, that’s fine.

I am so sorry that actual data upsets you.

Also, @Nancy1906 it is ‘posse’ rather than ‘possy’.

Yes @Nancy1906 please post a clip or at least tell us when the interview was. Which Labour Dame was on it, that might help narrow things down.

Intotheoud · 17/11/2024 14:19

And programme not program. No offence @Nancy1906, but you are not coming across as someone who can credibly weigh in on someone else's academic bona fides.

I regularly watch Laura K and Trevor Philips and it occurred in the last few weeks.

I'm sighing off now. I've spent too much time here today when they're far more pressing issues!

Otherunichoices · 17/11/2024 13:09

Oxford doesn't. It offers an MPhil that takes 2 academic years.

You know they offer more than one kind of masters in Economics?

You're so funny, clutching at straws. Did I say pure? I know someone right now doing a 9m masters in Economics at Oxbridge and someone who recently did one at the other place. Your googling doesn't seem to be working well.

I find your narrow view of what makes someone an economist quite entertaining. Some of our most famous economists wouldn't fit your narrow definition.

Good job you're not getting angry. I was just wondering what your deleted post said.

BoredZelda · 17/11/2024 14:31

Rachel Reeves will kill what’s left of the country’s economy. She is absolutely useless, you wouldn’t pay her to manage your children’s pocket money.

Alright Einstein, what would you do to fix the economy?

Eh? How can someone you’ll never meet and don’t know make you stay off a thread you are posting on anonymously?

Asking the simple question of which LK show and guests they referred to is bullying?

DelicateSoundOfEchos · 17/11/2024 16:13

It's incredible that people have enough fucks to give over this.

She worked at the BoE as an economist for 6 or so years and then moved into retail banking. So what? I don't especially care what she titled the retail banking job as, it doesn't change her experience at BoE.

She's also in a role which she was allocated by the PM. Nobody has voted for her to be Chancellor, the PM has deemed her to be the best person to fill the role, based upon his working and personal knowledge and experience of her.

This site is absolutely off it sometimes.

pointythings · 17/11/2024 16:24

So asking people to be precise about their sources of information is now bullying. Got it.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 17/11/2024 16:27

Nancy1906 · 17/11/2024 12:44

This is utter rubbish. A retail bank is like your Santander down the high street , offering mortgages, loans and credit cards. They do not have their own compliance department!

A retail bank is a bank that offers services to retail customers. This maybe through branches or online. Retail is a regulatory classification based on the customers’ knowledge, experience, net worth etc (as opposed to Professional and Eligible Counterparty) and/or whether they are acting in a personal capacity rather than a business or profession (depending on the circumstances and products).
Banks that predominantly market to retail customers are subject to the most rigorous regulatory regime because retail customers need the most protections. So whilst an individual branch may not have a compliance officer on site, retail banks have substantial compliance departments.

Aduvetday · 17/11/2024 16:32

Some people seem very defensive over what I meant. Tells its own tale. Never been quoted so fast…

This. Audit and compliance is huge.

summer555 · 17/11/2024 16:45

I worked in compliance at an investment bank for a few years. Does that make me an economist?

(Short answer, absolutely not and there's a fair bit of mixing up the FCA and the BoE on this thread.)
