There's something weird going on in my house

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

We're not on a housing estate. It's a small infill in a village.

OP would you consider staying elsewhere for a couple of days? I think this would really take a toll on my mental health if I was in your situation. If you could stay with a sibling or a friend you could monitor the cameras from a safe place?

@Tubor I live in a 2019 house on a development by Bellway and we all have Chimneys?

🤨

TyrannasaurusJex · 20/10/2024 19:36

following with the tiniest hope that we get to find out the answer!

Me too! Everything crossed but I often get too invested in threads that get removed when I'm sleeping 😔

Sorry op, I had to chuckle at the thought of rats opening your fridge and drinking some milk but having the audacity not to put it back again

I doubt very much that these strange occurrences are due to a paranormal entity. Flecks of (not proven) dried blood on the toilet cistern is not indicative of a vengeful ghost armed with a machete, not does it suggest there is an intruder with evil intent. There will be a very dull, very logical explanation and I don't expect it to be anything to do with an invasion of mutant spiders or ravenous rats climbing out of the toilet with their beady malevolent eyes on devouring the dogs while they sleep.

Dolly567 · 20/10/2024 19:41

I think the cats most likely but watching ..

The4teddybears · 20/10/2024 19:42

Re the bits on the cistern.
Could they be seeds from a silver birch tree.

Have you got trees near to your house ? We get them blowing in through closed windows , they come through the small air vent in the top of the frame
They’re all over the bathroom sink and on various window cills at the moment due to the windy weather.

I was imagining the rat using the phone charger! Just checking his texts whilst the battery tops up 😂

I would absolutely and totally welcome a mundane and boring explanation!

Posting as I want to know the outcome. Sure there’s a simpl explanation but I can’t think of one.

Not her. I'd swear on my life. For one, she hates any sort of practical joke and doesn't touch anything that doesn't belong to her without a direct invitation. She also doesn't go upstairs without a direct invitation.

Would she not even nip up if she needed the loo?

What do you mean possibly genuine, isn't it clear there's a chimney and a fire?

There can't be any doubt about this one

How did things end with your ex? Any chance he made copies of the key and is messing with you? If there are no ladders in the loft then it’s doubtful there’s someone getting in from there.

Pat888 · 20/10/2024 19:49

Is there an extractor vent in the bathroom -I get dust and bits through mine if the wind is in a certain direction.

CoolPlayer · 20/10/2024 19:52

when cleaning a house before the hinges on the toilet seat we’re rusty and after putting cleaner on the toilet the seat slammed shut and bits a bit like this shot up off it any chance the lids slammed down and that’s happened? X

Was literally about to post this. Was it a windy day? We had a particularly windy/ rainy day and I ended up with a puddle of what looked like wee on our cistern. I was really confused but turned out it had come in through the extractor fan.
