There's something weird going on in my house

horseHorseHorse · 19/10/2024 23:31

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

So not quite to scale but one is the living room, two the kitchen, 3 the front door, and 4 where I've got the camera. So I can see anyone passing through the living room but not into the actual kitchen. It's the only place I can put it that covers the front door though.

Have you got a chimney? Friend went home to things knocked over and quite a bit of blood over furniture. Was a squirrel that had fallen down the chimney!

Why wouldn't you if you have an issue, rather than posting this? You're more likely to have your post reported.

What does hubby think is going on?
Could you gave a UTI? I read something recently about untreated UTI’s affecting mental health; could you be forgetting things?

No, I don't feel ill and have no symptoms. And he's noticed stuff too. His glasses and watch keep moving about - he's been silently annoyed with me for it apparently but I've never touched them. It's not like he has one dedicated spot for them so I've never noticed but I have noticed similar with my stuff (like my phone charger keeps moving - it was in the kitchen the other day but I never take it out there. Assumed DH has borrowed it but I asked him today and he pointed out he had a iPhone and I'm android!)

Yes, but there's a gas fire at the bottom of it with no access in or out without removing it.

I really wish I was making this up! I keep flipping between the fact we're both losing the plot to genuine fear that someone is accessing our house.

That is not my fault. I didn't force the police to come out, or exaggerate the situation. I simply explained what I had here and they decided to send someone out.

OP, you don’t “have” anything. It’s one of 3 things-plain old absentmindedness, we all do it, but we don’t usually call the police over it. Your sister, seeing as she comes daily. Or this post is fake.
Let’s sum up what’s happened. A few lights have been on that you thought you had turned off, someone forgot to put the milk away, and someone sneezed blood on the cistern.

Bignanna · 20/10/2024 18:59

Curiouser and curiouser!

It’s clearly more than that!

Hi OP - I know this has probably been suggested but do the cameras record all day, you mentioned about the dog barking so it may indicate something outside as you noted earlier..either way I'm sorry this is happening to you guys and that you've had to deal with all of us guesstimating everything haha

ItsAllSoBleak · 20/10/2024 19:01

@horseHorseHorse do you have a catflap?

there are stories of burglars getting access via a catflap (turning backdoor key left in lock or using fishing rods to get handbags and keys out)

BoldAmberDuck · 20/10/2024 19:02

Get a pet camera, they’re cheap online. Set it up in one of the rooms and check throughout they day for movement

No, and we don't leave anything in the hall (because it's tiny!)

Everything goes into the living room and onto the sideboard which isn't even visible from the door.

It's keeping me distracted, honestly. Thank you!

Is it? Where? Where is it more than that? Because that is literally all that’s been mentioned.

There have been a few threads about this type of thing lately.

Locks have been changed, the outside camera installed (only wasn't put up because it literally came at 9pm then I was out early the next day)

I hear all of you saying flea muck but I'm horribly allergic to their bites so the animals are treated on a monthly basis and I've been all over them today with a flea comb without finding a single flea. Not discounting it though and will keep checking them!

DH has been up in the loft and says there's nothing amiss, thank god! It's also bolted from the outside now.

Ex lives at the other end of the country and has no reason to come back here (plus he's too bloody lazy)

Only close family have keys and they wouldn't fuck around like this. Plus my parents are disabled and physically couldn't get to the bathroom upstairs. Sister comes daily through the week to walk the dog but genuinely isn't the type to leave lights on or the milk out (she also doesn't drink milk!)

Police came at about 5am, had a quick look around the house and said to phone back if there was any more disruption.

So all a bit weird still. Still feeling a bit unsettled ☹️

I hope that puts an end to it.🤞 Please keep us updated. It's worrisome and anyone would be quite unsettled by that at the very least.

Christwosheds · 20/10/2024 19:07

I agree with pps that the specs of blood look like the ones you get from a cat when they have picked up fleas, so check your cats. It does look as though a cat could have been sitting on there, eg slightly fluffy ?
All the other things are really odd though.

Since you aren't here to be supportive, why don't you just pipe down.

I think any story which calls a group of immigrants a 'colony' is somewhat suspect. Also, it's from 2012, repeating a story from 2008, but mentions a lot of immigrants came from Kosovo in the 1990s - so 10 years living in attics?

Gas fires have died out? What are you on about? I had one installed much less than 20 years ago and they are still on sale everywhere.
