There's something weird going on in my house

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

My husband’s ex had never bothered to switch doctor’s surgeries. She drove all the way back for appointments and was popping in to make a cup of tea before she drove home again.

Did she take the time to wash up the cup and spoon to leave no trace but forget to put the milk away?

One crazy ex doesn't change my opinion that it's very unlikely

Goodbye1987 · 20/10/2024 09:57

Ffs this was the last thread I read before bed last night . And I have a dream that dd killed somone and left blood on the toilet cistern

flyingefffs · 20/10/2024 09:58

@LittleGreenDragons Incorrect! It was long before that I was fast asleep at 00:45!

Get a life!

I really don’t want to derail anything but the OP did post at 00:15 that the police were coming out and you posted at 00:45 that the police wouldn’t be remotely interested. Maybe there was a delay in your post uploading but @LittleGreenDragons is not wrong in what they are saying.

CornishTeaTime · 20/10/2024 10:14

The first thing I did this morning was check this post!!!!

Did anyone come out during the night OP @horseHorseHorse

Lyannaa · 20/10/2024 10:15

Omg how scary for you. Hopefully there isn't an intruder hiding in your attic?

Yourbodyyourchoice · 20/10/2024 10:17

I think bug/spiders, and forgetfulness is the cause. Honestly when you're in a hurry, the human brain sometimes cancels things out. Dh swore he has put his card somewhere etc, and he has an amazing memory. Human error does happen. There looks to be something under the sink too in a similar colour on your pic op.

Havalona · 20/10/2024 10:19

It's cayenne or paprika on the toilet. Someone is winding things up.

There is a similar colour bit on fhe floor as well and some sort of stick thing, not sure what that is. I would say wind up or insects.

stayathomegardener · 20/10/2024 10:23

Don't change the locks till you've solved this, you will regret not knowing what's going on.
Until the cameras are sorted I would take photos of the house as you leave to see if anything is disturbed and put a little piece of cut down sellotape at the base of doors/fridge so you can see if they have been opened.

I'll suggest a couple more theories.

Is there a chance that anyone is a secret drug user? Wondered if someone may have leant upon the toilet cistern to inject their arm?

Could be the remnants of a painful explosive poo that reached the cistern? Did anyone do a last minute dash before leaving for the day?

Could a small animal have got caught in your bathroom extractor fan and then splattered blood that reached your loo cistern?

Could be the remnants of a painful explosive poo that reached the cistern? Did anyone do a last minute dash before leaving for the day?

Out f all the hilarious and downright daft theories - THIS is the top one 😂

"A painful explosive poo" where the "remnants" career up into the air after leaving the backside, and settle on the cistern 😃😂and OP/ their family is too ruddy lazy to wash them off

Priceless

ChequerToRed · 20/10/2024 10:36

Those spots on the cistern are interesting. Firstly, look at the spray pattern. They've not been flicked from a low or level position as they're round spots, not the elongated spots you’d see from the momentum of a flick. They’ve dropped down from above.
While everything else could be put down to a perfectly rational explanation, the spots are odd if the bathroom has been shut all day. If the attic is directly above, I’d be checking that pretty smartish, not because some random may have shacked up there, but the far more likely reason that you’ve got wildlife setting up home there. This time of year is when mice (and larger rodents) are looking for a cosy winter hideaway, and as I found in the summer when sparrows were nesting in our soffit, even a hairline crack between the wall and the ceiling can bring down their mess into the space below.

Bewareofthisonetoo · 20/10/2024 10:43

This - I’ve had squirrels /mice/wasps (not all at the same time)

pocketpairs · 20/10/2024 10:44

Hmmmm...cats don't typically turn on lights, but definitely don't leave the milk out!!!

Do you believe in the super natural??

LeatherJacketWedding · 20/10/2024 10:45

I recognised the blood pattern immediately before I’d even read the rest of the post. It’s your cats OP. They must have fleas as it’s a tell-tale sign that they’re in distress with them. Mine actually has a flea allergy and does not cope well with them at all (google it), but he’s also allergic to flea treatment so that’s fun! I’m suspecting one of yours is too. Mine is also a house cat so no idea where he picks them up from.

pocketpairs · 20/10/2024 10:46

Also, how old are you're..could it be early stage dementia. Not trying to be offensive, just thinking of the movie - a beautiful mind.

But you haven't explained how the cat opens the bathroom door and closes it on the way out...

SoYouThinkYouCanPrance · 20/10/2024 10:48

For some of these suggestions, it’s not clear why the marks would be confined only to the cistern lid and not more widely spread across the surrounding area.

My cats would have drunk the milk and left the fridge door open. And could do that in darkness.

Cats/bugs/critters sink? Human forgetfulness the rest. Or a wind up thread?

Love the inventive theories though in time for the Halloween build up! 😂

StoneHenge85 · 20/10/2024 10:55

The Stasi secret police used to do this sort of thing in East Germany during the Cold War to psychologically freak people out. Just a little thing out of place here and there when they got in from work…

Shadesofscarlett · 20/10/2024 11:02

the red dots on the cistern are from the cat fleas.

I don't think you should be encouraging the OP's anxiety/imagination.
I'm sure I switched the light off and I'm sure I put the milk away are thoughts we all experience, there's nothing remotely out of the ordinary there.
The cistern thing is curious only because the OP said it was freshly cleaned just hours before the pic, however it clearly wasn't (there's hair on it, and it looks like cat hair).
If the police DO call round, they're going to consider it time wasting.

Chenecinquantecinq · 20/10/2024 11:04

There are some truly mental people on this site 😂those blood spots are very likely to be cat related. Even with the door shut mice can run under the tiniest of gaps. Those spots are similar to what we get when cats bring vermin in. Calling the police expecting them to do DNA analysis you all need locking up you complete idiots on here 🙄

Jollyhockeystickss · 20/10/2024 11:04

It could be rats or mice if you or neighbour has put down rat poisen and they eat it it makes them bleed internally so rodent could be dying in your bathroom ..have you noticed any droppings,
