There's something weird going on in my house

horseHorseHorse · 19/10/2024 23:31

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

I’d be freaked out too OP. Cameras would be my first action I think. I’d leave the locks because if someone was coming in, I’d want evidence and to know who it was. Hopefully some shops are open today that you can get cameras from, Argos May be?

Had something similar 20 yrs ago. small items moved around. half-eaten food on the kitchen worktop. thought someone had been in the apartment for sure. turned out to be a rat infestation. I'd almost rather have been burgled.
the other life lessons from this were:

  1. if you're hitting a dying (poisoned) rat with a shovel, don't hit it too hard or the brains can squirt on the wall
  2. covering the end of the shovel with a plastic bag before action means you can bin the bag and not have to clean blood and brains off the shovel.

Eurgh 🤢

No breakfast for me now.

Anyone know what relevance the carbon monoxide detectors have please? OP mentions them in her first post.

It can cause hallucinations or moments of amnesia, I think... eg OP being the one who got the milk out but totally forgetting she did.

VikingFortiesCromartyNorthWest4to6South3to5Later · 20/10/2024 08:23

This happened in our house a few years ago. Came back from work. Some specialist IT equipment opened and all set up and working properly - no manuals provided. Petrol from the garage decanted into little containers. Tins of cat food opened, just left with forks sticking out over the side.

Turned out beneath the garden and extending over the entire district was an enormous alien craft.

ladyditaverner · 20/10/2024 08:25

Is the toilet near the window OP? Rain comes through the top of our window above the bath and leaves marks which look similar sometimes.

come over for lunch and let's discuss - once we've eaten, I'll show you the shovel.

😬 🫣

mycatsanutter · 20/10/2024 08:28

Lots of people saying it must be the cat but op has said the bathroom door was firmly shut and cat was in the lounge when got in .

BibbityBobbityToo · 20/10/2024 08:29

Any chance your ex who did have keys but gave them back had a a copy cut first?

thegirlwithemousyhair · 20/10/2024 08:31

Could it be a bird has got in through a window ?

Before you panic about the blood, google images of spider shit. It is often reddish brown and in small circular droplets.

I was going to suggest this. My bathroom is spotless when we go to bed but I often wake up to find it covered in reddish brown splotches.

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 20/10/2024 08:35

I can’t believe the amount of people suggesting getting the forensics in and doing DNA swabs of the blood!
Op, that blood looks very much like some clumsy bloke haD a nose bleed, blew his nose (messily) while facing the loo and didn’t realise he’d sprayed droplets over the cistern.
All the other stuff is easily explained away as absentmindedness. We all leave lights on and are 100% sure we turned them off-I do it all the time. Also not only have I left the milk out before, I’ve put it in the washing machine. Tiredness, rushing round in the morning, perimenopause… none of these help matters 🤣
Put cameras up all round the house, next time a light is left on, you’ll see who did it on the camera 🤷🏻‍♀️

This sounds most likely solution

That sounds really unlikley to me, why would a random ex from years ago decide to start going round to her house to leave the milk out?

Cats that can get milk in and out of the fridge can definitely open and close the bathroom door!

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 20/10/2024 08:45

Sounds more like a ghost than a break in or cats. My cats have never switched on lights or left milk out .

Jein · 20/10/2024 08:45

My money is on your ex, OP.

Buckbeak123 · 20/10/2024 08:49

Came here to echo other people's answers of flea dirt which is a valid option. I'm a vet nurse and if you out flea dirt onto a white paper towel and wet it, it turns red. As it is essentially dried blood xx

DamnitImTired · 20/10/2024 08:50

Hope the OP updates us!

marcopront · 20/10/2024 09:01

I read this and then went to the bathroom.
My toilet roll had been attacked.
I strongly suspect the cat.

Occitane · 20/10/2024 09:03

There was an incident in my daughter’s school, where a teenage boy had a crush on one of the male teachers. He managed to get hold of his keys and had a copy made. He used to let himself into the house when it was empty, and was found one day by the teacher’s mother in law who had come to let the dog out.

Could anyone have had access to your keys and taken a copy?

valentinka31 · 20/10/2024 09:05

yes maybe DH came home in the day ?

how was he taking it? Was he scared?

Why so many swipes at men on this thread? First it's because her husband is having an affair and now it's a man who can't blow his nose properly. Seriously ladies what kind of men have you been dating? 😕

Newtosertraline · 20/10/2024 09:06

I also think spider or flea poo! If you google image search, some pictures look very similar.

stimpy1 · 20/10/2024 09:06

Do you have a blind above the toilet, the roller of my blind is going rusty and often drop rust mixed with water (due to the steam) onto the toilet which can look like bloodad it is a yellow/red colour

Mercurysinretrograde · 20/10/2024 09:08

It’s not much blood - maybe from a mouse? I have a problem with lights in my flat where I only spend 2 weeks a month for work. The lights were often on in the hall when I would come home. I always check that they are off when I leave. I thought someone might have a spare key and be coming in when I am away. But they also sometimes come on at night when I am there. They are on a dimmer switch which I think is not working properly and they switch on. I now turn the lights off at the mains when I leave. Could this be the issue?
