There's something weird going on in my house

horseHorseHorse · 19/10/2024 23:31

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

Did you move in fairly recently?

My first thought about the blood was that your husband had a shaving accident. It doesn't sound that way though.

Hope you're ok and that you get it sorted soon!

HarryBlackberry1 · 20/10/2024 07:34

Could someone be doing this to frighten you? Who has a key to your house? Weird things like this were happening to us a few years ago. Turns out it was someone who had a key to our property, and for reasons only known to themselves, decided to do subtle things to unnerve us.

DreamW3aver · 20/10/2024 07:37

Sampler · 20/10/2024 06:55

Is it not obvious ? Apart from a ghost obvs, it’s someone who OP has given a key to ?

But she has cameras, do you mean they have keys but go in through a window to not be picked up on video?

I'm thinking it's most likely bug related too

Happyher · 20/10/2024 07:42

Is one of your kids playing truant and coming home?

leafybrew · 20/10/2024 07:43

Gettingbysomehow · 20/10/2024 02:44

Sorry OP it's demons. Try not to panic.

😅😅😂

My cat left a rat in my crocs yesterday. Op I hope you get to the bottom of the weirdness in your home. Your home should be a place you can relax.

Picks my crocs up from the hall and puts them in the cupboard after shaking them upside down…..

Apparently it’s called phrogging when people secretly occupy your house… I knew I’d read about it a while ago but didn’t know what it is called. It is a thing. Unbelievable that people do this

Yes!!! I immeadiately thought of this 😩

MummyJ36 · 20/10/2024 07:48

Oh OP I’m sorry you’re going through this, glad the police have said they’ll send someone. If I was in your position I’d rig the house up with cameras as much as possible and then go and stay with your sister for a few days and then come back (with DH, not alone) and review the footage.

Daschund · 20/10/2024 07:49

Is there a big spider in a web above the loo? It looks like their poo. Spiders don't drink milk and turn on lights though.

Burned the house down...

Lourdes12 · 20/10/2024 07:53

Put up cameras in your rooms

Fluffyelephant · 20/10/2024 07:57

This must be so frightening. I really hope the police come out today.

2021mumma · 20/10/2024 08:00

Change the lock barrels on all external doors. Do you have a garage can you enter the house through the garage? Can you put a lock on the loft hatch? And more cameras. Must be so scary I hope 101 come out to you soon.

Had something similar 20 yrs ago. small items moved around. half-eaten food on the kitchen worktop. thought someone had been in the apartment for sure. turned out to be a rat infestation. I'd almost rather have been burgled.
the other life lessons from this were:

  1. if you're hitting a dying (poisoned) rat with a shovel, don't hit it too hard or the brains can squirt on the wall
  2. covering the end of the shovel with a plastic bag before action means you can bin the bag and not have to clean blood and brains off the shovel.
9ToGoal · 20/10/2024 08:03

@TerfTalking My crocs live in the cupboard too. Kitty's not a hunter, she pees in them! Only the crocs.

She can also open doors, not that cupboard thankfully.

Hasn't mastered getting the milk out yet 😅

Clawdy · 20/10/2024 08:03

Hope it's sorted today, OP.

Whatoflife · 20/10/2024 08:04

Flea dirt from a cat looks like tiny black dots, it is in fact flea poo which when gets wet turns red as flea poo is blood. iI’s exactly what it looks like on the back of the loo. If there’s condensation in the bathroom the loo could be wet.
If you hold your cat over a piece of white paper or a surface and give the coat a good rake you may see the black dots, make it slightly damp, wait a minute or so and you’ll see the blood.
I run a cat rescue and see it often.

I have heard of people being able to access the next door loft in Victorian terrace houses and it explaining strange occurrences. Could this be a possibility?

Yes, this was absolutely the case in the Terraced house I grew up in.
A shared Attic space!

Our bit was full of utter rubbish. The neighbours less so 😂

Showbel · 20/10/2024 08:05

Install cameras (obviously not in the bathroom)

I'm 100% thinking "rat" is a metaphor. 🤔

Goingncforthisone · 20/10/2024 08:11

Someone else mentioned extractor fan I think. A small animal could have got in there and come to violent end as the fan was running?

I think that's the most plausible explanation (or bug poo) and the rest is family members being busy and forgetful.

6pence · 20/10/2024 08:12

Did the ex know the dog? Or why would the dig not go balistic if someone actually entered the house?

Projectme · 20/10/2024 08:13

You mentioned a family member had recently stayed...did they have a key? Have you got that back? Could they have made a copy?

Edited

come over for lunch and let's discuss - once we've eaten, I'll show you the shovel.

liveyoungstayactive · 20/10/2024 08:17

Anyone know what relevance the carbon monoxide detectors have please? OP mentions them in her first post.
