Vimto or Vimpto

How do you pronounce it?

For me, I say it like ‘Vimp-toe

Is this a Northern thing?

Also, can we agree a cold pint of Vimto is one of the best drinks ever

Where I live, we just cut out words for no reason.
Jwonowtfrotshop? 🤣

Pa'crissnki'ka'?

One of the reasons we loved visiting my mum's midlands home village as kids was the availability of Vimto, which was nowhere to be seen on the south coast. It was universally vimpto but with a subtle p, more like a standard glottal stop. Would never say vimmmmto.

Woopthereitisman · 18/10/2024 11:00

@FrangipaniBlue Ridiculous. Not the same thing at all

I love this thread!
It's my daily drink and pronounced Vimp-toe and everybody I know pronounces it like this 🤣 (40's, Manchester)
Years ago when I worked in a supermarket, head office tried to discontinue it from the cordial plans, imagine the uproar when we found out!! Store manager then proceeded to make up his own plan with shelves and shelves of it!
It's still like that now and it's 10 years since I worked there!

Woopthereitisman · 18/10/2024 11:50

@Misslola1999 😂 40’s too and Manchester, everyone I know says this

I was today years old (40s) when I realised I say ‘ham-bag’ 😂 too, thanks @CaneToad
🤣🤣
‘there’s a bottle of vimp-toe next to me/my ham-bag…”

And I don't even eat ham! I wouldn't need a bag for it.

Writing down pronunciations is always difficult, but here goes... you know how the letters "oo" can been short (for example "cook" being the U sound in Tuck) or can be long (like in "Stool")?

Aunty and cousin are Liverpudlian. This was the 1970s.

Cousin saw our (shared) Nan from the window of the double decker bus and shouted "Look [rhymes with tuck] Mum, it's Nan, there on the high street! Look!"
Aunty reached across the bus aisle and slapped her sharply on the leg.
"For god's sake, Lisa, it's LOOK [long oo like Stool]! Speak properly!"

I am not Liverpudlian. I just gawped at my Aunty for the rest of the journey.

It's been 50 years, but whenever anyone of us pronounce something without a Northern accent someone else will say "For god's sake, Lisa, speak properly!"

Ham-bag it is. ;)

Vimto is purest Manchester/Lancashire in a glass/mug 😂

It's not Scottish.

I'm sure it's made by Barrs as in Irn Bru so yes Scottish.

I and DH both add the p.

Definitely, I’ve spent sunny days under the big bottle in Vimto gardens off Whitworth Street

Scot.

I say it both ways. But if I'm not concentrating it's Vimpto.

Londoner here. And the same as Emmy P.

CellophaneFlower · 18/10/2024 18:44

SabreIsMyFave · 17/10/2024 17:52

Northern here - never said vimpto. Don't know anyone who does.

Do you say Chimlee and hospical too? 😆

My nan used to call it the 'ospidal.

StillCreatingAName · 18/10/2024 18:52

See also, nans who said “I’ll put the kekkle on…”

VioletCrawleyForever · 18/10/2024 19:10

Am Scottish

CellophaneFlower · 18/10/2024 19:45

We also call it vimtoad, after the advert

Investinmyself · 18/10/2024 19:50

I’m definitely vimp toe pronunciation from east Manchester now Lancs. Sign of a decent chippy if they sell it.
