Vimto or Vimpto

Woopthereitisman · 16/10/2024 22:36

How do you pronounce it?

For me, I say it like ‘Vimp-toe

Is this a Northern thing?

Also, can we agree a cold pint of Vimto is one of the best drinks ever

I always say the p. Welsh.

ReadWithScepticism · 17/10/2024 16:45

I've always said Vimpto without even thinking about it (until this thread title). Even though that is clearly not its name. How odd.

But then I always used to think that hamsters were hampsters.

Tulipvase · 17/10/2024 16:48

I’d have said don’t be stupid it’s Vimto but having now said it lots of times, I think there is a bit if a p in there. Very definitely a southerner.

ReadWithScepticism · 17/10/2024 16:48

Oh, and PS (pronounced PPS of courseGrin), I think Vimto is DISGUSTING. It is Ribena for people who hate themselves.

kittylion2 · 17/10/2024 16:51

Lancashire - originally Manchester and I think we did have the hint of a p in there but I don't say it that way now. I love it, especially hot in winter or when I've got a cold. Got to be in a glass mug. Have never got over it being an anagram of vomit though. 🙁

Seventimesaday · 17/10/2024 16:58

Had the same conversation recently with DH…I always say Vimpto.
Unless I deliberately say Wimpto which is what the kids called it.

UnnTheDeepMinded · 17/10/2024 17:06

Known as ‘Vimto - it’s an anagram of vomit’ in this house.

CaneToad · 17/10/2024 17:08

Vimto definitely pronounced vimpto. Also Northern.

But I pronounce handbag as ham-bag (as in “fetch us me keys, will you, love? They’re in me ham bag!”)

ElatedLemonExpert · 17/10/2024 17:13

If you ask me this is confusing the ‘t’ and ‘p’ sound.
As I pronounce it ‘vimt-o’ rather than ‘Vimp-toe’ but as I say them both I can see they are very similar to the ear.

BogRollBOGOF · 17/10/2024 17:17

Alas I have no need to ask for Vimto (no P) since it was desacrated with artifical sweetners.

It used to be lovely to drink hot on a cold winters day.

JohnTheRevelator · 17/10/2024 17:40

My favourite drink! I pronounce it 'Vimto',no 'p' sound in it for me

Northern here - never said vimpto. Don't know anyone who does.

Do you say Chimlee and hospical too? 😆

They still do the normal one. Can't say it tastes exactly the same as the original, but there's definitely a full fat version! I buy whichever one is on offer 🤪

The middle eastern stuff has no artificial sweeteners (well, they do a sugar-free version, but the standard one is just sweetened with sugar). I guess it wouldn't be much use for iftar otherwise. You can buy it online but it might be a bit pricey. Could try local import shops?

Rowansiskin · 17/10/2024 18:19

Vimpto in The Midlands. Lovely hot. Though if I was in Scotland I’d be on the Irn Bru instead

dollopofsauce · 17/10/2024 19:01

I'm now sitting here saying Vimpto and Hampster on repeat Blush. I'm from east Lancs originally and it turns out I say both "vimp-toe" and Hampster". Who knew?
I also don't think I realised Vimto was a northern thing but I'm proud that it is as it's bloody lovely (original full sugar cordial version, that is)

That’s more Rochdale or Bury way, vimpto is slightly more north
(Edit actually I’ve never heard anyone in Bury say ‘vimto’ let alone ‘vimpto’. I will investigate when I next go to the market)
@dollopofsauce I’ve heard Hampster a fair bit round here too (or rather a fair bit round where I grew up)

Woopthereitisman · 17/10/2024 22:18

@AllThePotatoesAreSingingJingleBells Ive heard Hospical a fair bit, but def don’t say it 😅
Whats chimlee? Chimney?
Parents from Moston and Langley, I’m near Stocky 🤣

You can still get the old one- the tops are different colours.

The original one has still had most of the sugars swopped for sweetness, like most soft drinks. Dr Pepper, Fanta, Irn Bru. They used to be over 100 calories a can and are now around 60. The only one I can think of that is untouched is Coca Cola.

The “zero” versions are pretty much calorie free.

I was in the states recently and drank my own body weight in full sugar Dr Pepper. I’m glad it’s not an option all the time though!

Linlithgow · 18/10/2024 00:00

Midlands and I didn't realise but I say vimpto Blush

stonebrambleboy · 18/10/2024 00:20

When we lived in Australia my friend brought a bottle back from the UK wrapped in a towel in her suitcase, it smashed, what a mess. Though the Uncle Joe's Mintballs from Wigan were alright 😁

FrangipaniBlue · 18/10/2024 00:55

Vimto.

I judge people who say Vimpto the same as those who type would of, should of, could of....

FrangipaniBlue · 18/10/2024 00:58

@SabreIsMyFave I like you, we could be friends 😂

Needalisteningear · 18/10/2024 10:34

Where I live, we just cut out words for no reason.
Jwonowtfrotshop? 🤣
