How do you pronounce it?

For me, I say it like ‘Vimp-toe

Is this a Northern thing?

Also, can we agree a cold pint of Vimto is one of the best drinks ever

I pronounce it Vimpto. Think pp are thinking of Iron Bru which is Scottish?

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 16/10/2024 23:59

Yes, I think I say it with a delicate p too. Never thought about it until your thread. I'm from Yorkshire.

I can't stand the stuff though. Ribena all the way for me.

No, we're thinking of the purple stuff that is Vimto. We're just agreeing we say it with a p here too.
Irn Bru is ginger and clearly pronounced as "fucking amazing" Wink

ObieJoyful · 17/10/2024 07:27

The inventor of Vimto pronounced it Vimpto, so there you go.

Gavel.

Sharptonguedwoman · 17/10/2024 08:00

Very confused. There's no P in Vimto. So Vim-toe.

Vimto is Mancunian, we have a statue and everything: https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/a-monument-to-vimto

Yesss! I was going to mention that, I have a picture of me next to it from when I once stumbled upon it on a day out in Manchester, I was with someone who had never even heard of Vimto/Vimptoe/Vimm-toe 😮 which was more surprising than discovering the statue!

StillCreatingAName · 17/10/2024 11:28

@Woopthereitisman OP 👏🏼 for starting this topic, a little thread of joy 😊

can someone please start one for Horlicks sweet tablets as I have a colleague who refused to believe me when I mentioned they were a thing you bought in chemists

To me the most interesting thing about Vimto is that it lives two separate lives.

You've got your purple livery Vimto, the one that you see in UK supermarkets, that positions itself as a bit of a quirky, trendy, plucky challenger to the big brands, for those who are Too Cool For Ribena.

Then you've got your red livery Vimto, which mostly markets itself in the Middle East as a classic, traditional, comforting part of an old-fashioned family Ramadan, just like grandma used to give you.

Vimto or Vimpto

Vimto

I mean that’s the way it should be spelled and pronounced.

Vimpto is a bit of a joke/ childhood thing, I think. The way children often add extra sounds into words. I have heard it said that way but not any suggested that’s the actual pronunciation.

FortunaMajor · 17/10/2024 11:34

Cheeky heads up for the lovers, Lidl now do a knock off called Mixto. Quid a bottle, tastes the same.

I live right near the head office, everyone who works there says Vimpto.

AllThePotatoesAreSingingJingleBells · 17/10/2024 11:35

It was vimpto in East Lancs when I was growing up. I was very surprised to learn there wasn’t a P on the bottle!!!

PeachyKeane · 17/10/2024 11:38

I love Vimto lollies as well. Northerner and definitely there's a soft p

I used to get a huge jar of Horlicks for Christmas and eat it with a spoon! But yes, also loved the tablets.

Ha! I love that Vim(p)to has a double life.

JerkintheMerkin · 17/10/2024 11:41

I pronounce it absolutely gross. I suspect it's just me. Grin

perenniallymessy · 17/10/2024 11:45

Southerner born and bred and I say Vimpto (subtle 'p' sound), I also say 'hampster'.

I drank Vimto every single day from the age of 13 to 25, then I mostly gave up squash. I don't mind the sugar free one cold but it has to be the sugar version for hot Vimto.

borntobequiet · 17/10/2024 11:48

Originally the name was Vim Tonic, vim being Latin for strength and vigour. It got shortened to Vimto. (And yes, I knew this without Googling, as it was one of the random facts my dad imparted to me as a child.)
People will pronounce it according to their preference/regional dialect/whatever. It doesn’t really matter.

Needalisteningear · 17/10/2024 11:49

Lancashire... vimpto. Never heard anyone else call it different

Singleandproud · 17/10/2024 11:50

Vimto here - it's my drink of choice, I've already had two hot ones today
Or in the summer vimto + lemonade I don't actually like it in normal temp tap water.

Woopthereitisman · 17/10/2024 11:51

@borntobequiet It absolutely matters 😂

This random "p" appearing in the pronunciation of Vimto is fascinating. I don't mean this as a criticism - having grown up outside of the UK I am often caught short by regional accents / pronunciations, and it's very interesting to hear why this occurs. I think my favourite is "garridge" for "garage" (SE venacular, I think) - where does the "d" come from?

(Same place as the "p", I guess!)

ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood · 17/10/2024 12:01

Vimto!
Great hot with a shot of rum when you have a cold.
Doesn't do anything clinically, but tastes good!

MadKittenWoman · 17/10/2024 12:28

Northerner here. Primary school was opposite the factory or distribution centre. It's Vimto.

MadKittenWoman · 17/10/2024 12:30

rainfallpurevividcat · 16/10/2024 22:47

I say Vimpto, as that's what everyone called it when we were growing up in Manchester.

Nope, I'm a Manc and it's Vimto!
