Vimto or Vimpto

Woopthereitisman · 16/10/2024 22:36

How do you pronounce it?

For me, I say it like ‘Vimp-toe

Is this a Northern thing?

Also, can we agree a cold pint of Vimto is one of the best drinks ever

Woopthereitisman · 16/10/2024 22:57

But wait..no..it’s not a soft drink…! Not the fizzy one 🤮

Has to be the cordial and not the sugar free one

Northerner here, Vimto!
Ooh, after saying it a few times, it's like a p sound is subtly there 😳

Edited

Yes I think I have a subtle p in there too. Not intentional.

I’m northern with a Scottish mother so maybe the p sound comes from her…

redalex261 · 16/10/2024 23:03

Delicious Vimpto - here in Scotland!!

ExitPursuedByABare · 16/10/2024 23:06

What is wrong with you?

It’s Vimto. That’s how it’s spelt. That’s how you say it.

<walks off muttering>

mrsfollowill · 16/10/2024 23:07

Born in Lancashire very close to the factory and I'm now saying it out loud and I think I'm pronouncing vimp-toe- it's just what we said! loved the bottles of original cordial and the the jubblies every corner shop sold- along with a hot pie! You could buy a hot pie from every corner shop and even the ice cream van back in the 80's in Lancs when I was a lass.
I had lived the other side of the Pennines for the last 30 yrs though so sort of honorary Yorkshire woman these days.

StillCreatingAName · 16/10/2024 23:13

Vimp-toe or you’re not a real northerner. The sugar free one is rank. Hot Vimp-toe is the best. I have a memory that it was created by accident, was never intended to taste as it does?

TheCultureHusks · 16/10/2024 23:15

It’s a bit like hampsters

ExitPursuedByABare · 16/10/2024 23:16

Bollocks. I’m northern born and bred and it’s Vimto.

recyclemeagain · 16/10/2024 23:16

@TheCultureHusks woah! Who's out there saying a p in hamster? Shock

Woopthereitisman · 16/10/2024 23:17

Hamster doesn’t have a P sound 😂

Vimptoe does.

The Scottish connection is interesting! I'm half Scottish and live on the (English side) border... Don't remember anyone saying it particularly with a strong 'p' sound but it's obviously there somewhere. Darn you OP, going to be conscious of that every time I say it now 🤣
Vim-to... Vim-to... Vim-to... Vimpto... It definitely needs that p to bridge the gap! My mouth feels funny now 😵‍💫🤣

Woopthereitisman · 16/10/2024 23:19

🤣

I don’t get the Scottish connection?!

Don’t want to be rude, but you’ve got Irn Bru…ours is Vimptoe & Dandelion & Burdock

ExitPursuedByABare · 16/10/2024 23:16

Bollocks. I’m northern born and bred and it’s Vimto.

Would you pronounce it ‘vim-toe’ though?

It’s Vimto, pronounced all this time as vimp-toe. The sugar free one is bollocks though.

ObieJoyful · 16/10/2024 23:20

Caerulea · 16/10/2024 22:43

Vimp-to for me too & not Northern. Used to love it till they swapped out the sugar & put sweeteners in.

You can still get the old one- the tops are different colours.

not4profit · 16/10/2024 23:20

I was born and raised in Wythenshawe where the factory was in the 70s, and I have been a Vimto drinker for many decades now. Somewhere upstairs I have a "Vimto Book of Knowledge" from my childhood.

About 20 years ago I wrote to their customer services complaining about an apparent change in the recipe, my latest bottle tasted different. They wrote me a very nice letter back and explained there had been an issue with a batch containing too much blackcurrant, and they delivered me a case of bottles by way of compensation.

It's weird to think that when I first moved South in the 1980s it was impossible to buy here and I had to bring it back from the North whenever I visited.

And it's definitely Vimto not Vimp-to.

ExitPursuedByABare · 16/10/2024 23:25

Vim toe.

I used to take bottles back to college in Chester for my Southern friends. Plus granny’s Parkin.

avignon1234 · 16/10/2024 23:31

I realise that I have added the P, unasked. So for me it is VIMP-toe (i am northern), but I am now thinking it should be VIMTOE, no P. I am not really sure who misled me in the first place, especially as I am more of a Ribena girl. My kids like VIMP-toe or VIMto, I will ask them what they say.

LockForMultiball · 16/10/2024 23:35

Northern, and have never heard "Vimp-to" in my life. I'd remember if I had, because if I'd ever heard it, I'd have thought to myself, "WTF, why are you putting a random p in there?"

This must be one of those Mandela effect things. I've somehow sidestepped into a universe where people inexplicably pronounce Vimto as "Vimp-to", and can only pray that I step back to reality sooner rather than later. Horrifying.

Melroses · 16/10/2024 23:36

I think it is just the local accent - a strong M sound that may sound as if there is a p in it.

Same as with the strong G sound and R sound and other consonants. (think they are called rhotic)

Really? I've not seen them anywhere for years, I'd buy the crap out of those

TravellingJack · 16/10/2024 23:43

Like warmth or warmPth... sorry!

Caerulea · 16/10/2024 23:45

Woopthereitisman · 16/10/2024 23:17

Hamster doesn’t have a P sound 😂

Vimptoe does.

Ahhh sheeeeet, yeah it does. It's like joined up writing but with sounds - there's a little something coming off the m to join it to the t & that something is a sorta P sound without actually being a p.

discoballdave · 16/10/2024 23:46

It's Vimto. Just like hamster is not hampster.

Duckingella · 16/10/2024 23:56

I'll probably get lynched for saying this but I've recently tried the new Lidl fake version of Vimto and I have to say everyone in my house loved it;it tastes more like the Vimto of yesteryear.
