Vimto or Vimpto

Woopthereitisman · 16/10/2024 22:36

How do you pronounce it?

For me, I say it like ‘Vimp-toe

Is this a Northern thing?

Also, can we agree a cold pint of Vimto is one of the best drinks ever

OP posts:
Figment1982 · 17/10/2024 12:32

I definitely say Vimpto and I’m a southerner. And I concur OP, it is the most divine drink (but only the full sugar version)

Bonjovispjs · 17/10/2024 12:35

I'm southern and say Vimto. I have a cold pint in front of me right now, but made with fizzy water (sorry op)

This reminds me of a friend who insisted hamsters are called hampsters, she's a vet nurse 😆

Ikilledtheorchidagain · 17/10/2024 12:36

Vimto. Northerner.
Only my friends had it my parents didn't buy it and how I savoured that drink at my friend's house. I still buy it sometimes and really enjoy it.
I can imagine how a cockney accent might sound out vimptoe.

buffyfaithspike · 17/10/2024 12:36

With a P
I'm from Lancashire

ApolloandDaphne · 17/10/2024 12:39

Vimpto in my corner of Scotland.

PaperBee · 17/10/2024 12:40

Nothing to do with dialect. The p sound is what you get when your lips are in an m position and you hold then release air like in a t. We don’t completely separate sounds when we speak as if we’re in a phonics lesson saying c-a-t, the sounds overlap and blend together. So if you run m and t together you get a p sound appearing, see also dreamt.

StillCreatingAName · 17/10/2024 12:44

Ha, good explanation @PaperBee but also anyone pronouncing it ‘Vimp-toe’ may say ‘dremm-t’ for ‘dreamt’

Edited

I think people just don’t often hear what they’re saying exactly. If I try really hard I can say vim-to with no p sound because it’s two syllables, but I can’t say dreamt without a p unless I completely separate it and say drem…. te.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/10/2024 12:54

I say it 'vimto' - and I lived in Manchester for 6 years, and never heard it pronounced with a P in it.

muddyford · 17/10/2024 12:54

There's an area of Plymouth called Plympton - goodness knows why, as the river isn't the Plymp. Perhaps in the past it was written as someone said it.

LittleBobbyDazzler · 17/10/2024 12:58

I've been saying it over and over, said it so much now I can't for the life of me work out which way I say it and it doesn't sound like a real word anymore.

Fizzy only though the cordial is rank, only the best fizzy chemicals for me. Possibly because I'd never had the cordial til I was an adult and it never hit the same. Freezing cold ribena on the other hand, was my hangover go to as a teen / early 20s. It's also rank now.

Riapia · 17/10/2024 13:00

A p in Vimto would definitely affect the taste.
😉😁😁.

cheesegromit13 · 17/10/2024 13:10

Vimp-toe here, I also say Hamp-ster. North East.

123becauseicouldntthinkofone · 17/10/2024 13:56

Another northerner and yes quiet p vimpto it is :)

toomuchfaff · 17/10/2024 15:14

VimPto is God level

Fontainebleau007 · 17/10/2024 15:18

I say Vimpto but that's not as bad as my DH asking for some Vitamo once. I was very confused 😂 he was like "oh yeah that whatever it's called" 🙉

DerekFaker · 17/10/2024 15:18

Vimto. I'm from the north east.

BobbyBiscuits · 17/10/2024 15:24

I think I just say Vim-toe.
It used to be nice but they changed it. It's got loads of horrible sweetners on it now so I don't drink it anymore.
The drink I miss from my childhood was Ombongo!

JimmyGrimble · 17/10/2024 16:00

Manchester. Vimpto. Only the purple lidded version, never the blue. My grandad liked anagrams and always referred to it as ‘vomit’

JMSA · 17/10/2024 16:02

I don't like the stuff but I'm Scottish and would say the 'p' Smile

PiggieWig · 17/10/2024 16:04

I’m from Lancs and say it with a silent P. It sounds really strange to say Vimmto. It gives me a weird ick 😂

BluebellsareBlue · 17/10/2024 16:08

I had never even contemplated how I say it but now that you've forced me to.... haha I'm east of Scotland and I didn't know I did it but I def say vimpto!!

CellophaneFlower · 17/10/2024 16:11

We only ever drink vimto if drinking squash. Never called it vimpto though. We just call it vim now!

Drivingoverlemons · 17/10/2024 16:16

Vimto!

Larryimonducktales · 17/10/2024 16:38

To me the most interesting thing about Vimto is that it lives two separate lives.

You've got your purple livery Vimto, the one that you see in UK supermarkets, that positions itself as a bit of a quirky, trendy, plucky challenger to the big brands, for those who are Too Cool For Ribena.

Then you've got your red livery Vimto, which mostly markets itself in the Middle East as a classic, traditional, comforting part of an old-fashioned family Ramadan, just like grandma used to give you.

I only recently found out this was a thing and now am the proud owner of a posh vimto I'm using as an ornament.

I don't think I say the p, but the more I say it the less sure I am. I bloody love vimto though.
