To expect my daughter to have access to non halal meat

Bushmillsbabe · 06/10/2024 16:13

My daughters school now has only halal meat available for their school lunches.

I personally do not wish my child to have halal meat, I think its more cruel than other slaughter methods, however this thread is not intended to debate which is worse/better.

She is dairy and gluten intolerant, and her safe options tended to be things like roast chicken, the vegetarian options usually contain dairy. The pork sausages contain gluten so she would have the chicken sausages, she also eats burgers and meatballs but these are now also halal.

So if I don't give her halal meat, she is left with jacket potato with beans every day, which she does eat, but doesn't want to have every day.

I fully respect that Muslim parents wish their child to have halal meat, but am I wrong in thinking my dietary preferences for my daughter should also be respected and she should have access to non halal meat?

YANBU, most definitely not.
There needs to be a non halal option and it should not become the default.

Cost.

Given the majority of parents are ok with their kids eating halal meat, it make sense to go with the majority.

Are they? Or is it being used without much promotion of the fact?

I live in the middle east, where meat is just meat. You either eat it or you don't.

When you fly with Emirates, Qatar, Etihad etc all meals are halal.

When? You mean if surely?

YANBU.

We are not a Muslim country so why is halal the default?

Why isn't there one halal option?

Pork sausages is surely the non-halal option.

Don't get why halal\ kosher ie slitting throat is any more\ less cruel than electrocution. Have you seen how appalling that is too?

I grew up in a country where both Muslims and Christians ate what would be deemed 'halal' ie it was a regional preference. Personally I'd rather my kids only eat veggie but as they don't have allergies I've left it to them to try whatever they choose and decide. Only eat organic\ farmers market at home and only occasionally as ethical meat is pricey.

TwinklyAmberOrca · 06/10/2024 20:01

YANBU.

Given less than 7% of the population are Muslim, then making all meat Halal is ridiculous. It should be non-halal (humanely slaughtered) meat and for those who are vegetarian or Muslim, they can eat the vegetarian food.

I will not eat halal as I really can't stand the idea of an animal being slaughtered in such a way. No life should be ended like that.

Death is generally considered harmful.

I do not eat any meat and know nothing about the different slaughter practices- something I have very much chosen NOT to educate myself on , as it’s all too horrible for me to think about. But I do think there are probably more or less cruel ways of killing an animal…
Regardless my point was that that pp’s comment - about herself - was irrelevant to OP’s concern, which was about cruelty of diff slaughter practices .

Aside from the fact more than not are stunned for halal in this country; do you not see the difference between an instantaneous death and bleeding to death? Even though it happens quickly for poultry, one is ever so slightly more humane albeit obviously still not sunshine and rainbows.

I've been trying to get my son to go veggie for a while. He just loves his chicken too much

MellersSmellers · 06/10/2024 20:03

Halal would surely include chicken?
Like others say, if you have animal welfare concerns go veggie

Do you have objections to the majority of halal, which is stunned before slaughter?

foghead · 06/10/2024 20:06

All the mass produced halal meat in supermarkets and restaurants is stunned first.
The decision to adapt abattoirs for halal and non halal slaughter will be for commercial reasons.

Tried that, she ate none of it. She will only eat gf bread toasted and warm, probably due to her sensory issues but also to be fair, gf bread is not the best and toasting it makes it slightly better. We tried other options but lunchbox cane back full every time.

Packed
Much needn't be a sandwich though I've made slab bol GF pasta for DR classmate when parent was ill or rice with meatballs or egg fried rice with veggies etc. We've a sweet thermal cylinder lunchbox that keeps good hot\ warm too.

Personally id prefer meat and fish to only be offered once or twice a week at school rather than dai?y, but appreciate that's a big ask too.

Can we not call it "stunned" isn't it more like... bashing their heads in ?

The it's hard to balance nutritious if a child is difficult. My CD will eat anything from Ikea to tofu and bean stews, but Dd will clean the bone of a chop and easily down a slab of steak but cringe at the whiff of broccoli ;-(

No methods of slaughter or pre-slaughter stunning are rainbows and puppies, but this isn't accurate.

If there was paperwork saying it had been stunned first then I would have no objection to it.

It's around 2/3rds that is stunned first. In the UK it is not a legal requirement to stun the animal first, whereas in other countries it is law.

Are all the people complaining about animal suffering on here vegan? Cos if not you’re all a bunch of massive hypocrites

Yep I am and I recognise at least 3 other usernames here who I've spoken to about it before who are.

But that's not what happens, the majority of chickens in this country are gassed to death and then have their throats slit, the rest are put through what is essentially an electrical current where the majority are killed before having their throats slit to drain the blood.

Yeah, it's hard. My son won't touch a lentil for e.g. And I get he's needing his protein

Really, all food served in schools should be vegan, gluten free and nut free.

I'm not taking the piss. That would mean the food available was suitable for a majority of allergen sufferers, and all ethical and religious beliefs.

If this caused issues for children with sensory problems or gut issues then a packed lunch would suffice in place - and I'd personally be happy for vouchers as a substitute for FSM to be used in place for children with those issues. This should be in place anyway - lots of children due to sensory problems cannot eat standard school dinners as is, and parents shouldn't be stretched to pay for lunches due to SEN.

Would certainly solve these sorts of dilemmas, and would ensure tax payer money wasn't funding animal cruelty for school dinners - no matter where you personally draw the line at what that constitutes (all meat v halal or kosher, free range etc).

I thought, it was like a metal hammer looking thing that fires out a component onto their skull with force

For larger animals anyway
