To expect my daughter to have access to non halal meat

Bushmillsbabe · 06/10/2024 16:13

My daughters school now has only halal meat available for their school lunches.

I personally do not wish my child to have halal meat, I think its more cruel than other slaughter methods, however this thread is not intended to debate which is worse/better.

She is dairy and gluten intolerant, and her safe options tended to be things like roast chicken, the vegetarian options usually contain dairy. The pork sausages contain gluten so she would have the chicken sausages, she also eats burgers and meatballs but these are now also halal.

So if I don't give her halal meat, she is left with jacket potato with beans every day, which she does eat, but doesn't want to have every day.

I fully respect that Muslim parents wish their child to have halal meat, but am I wrong in thinking my dietary preferences for my daughter should also be respected and she should have access to non halal meat?

@Wellingtonspie

If suddenly all school dinners where Kosher I’m sure they it would be all about how Kosher is bad

I don’t think this is true and if you’re honest you’ll admit it isn’t.

Those pesky modal verbs again. “Should” isn’t enough in practice www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-64873897.amp

That’s does not say safeguarding referrals won’t be made.

It says that lawbreaking parents will try to avoid the law.

I mean the fact there is an entire police unit to deal with it shows it is not something we “tolerate” in guise of religious tolerance.

Dksks · 06/01/2025 17:38

It just means more people can eat the meat. As a non religious person it wouldn't really bother me in what manner the animal was killed.

In many non religions meat cases, the animals have unhappy lives. Chickens for example are factory farmed and stuffed and collapse on their own weight.

If you really care about animal wellbeing, go vegetarian or vegan.

I’m sure they would.

One for the way it’s done

Two because it’s so much more expensive than “normal” meat so a double whammy of it being a waste of either school budget if in free meal ages or overly costly school dinners.

Three on the why Kosha no halal would be added to the argument as well, with a more children are Muslim than are Jewish so why should we have to go to the minority.

We could continue then with religion has no place at the dinner table of a school, everyone should just eat veggie, everyone should bring a pack up.

I genuinely do not think most objection to Halal meat is the method is slaughter uniquely. I think if all meat served was kosher the numbers who would take issues with it would fall dramatically.

I didn’t say they won’t or shouldn’t be made. I implied they’re ineffective because they won’t be followed up.
Consider how few prosecutions there are for it.

LittleMG · 06/01/2025 17:53

Yabu eat the vegetarian option

In fact, let me expand. Consider two girls. One muslim of Pakistani heritage. One non Muslim of white ethnicity. They both go on holiday at the age of 14 and never come back. Their parents say they’ve moved to that country permanently and live with family now. There are whispers around school they both got married. You report them. The parents deny it to authorities. The reports remain on record.
Four years later they return to the UK, aged 18, married with a 3 year old child and a 40 year old husband.

Which one is most likely to be investigated?

I think an awful lot of people have no idea that most school meals are halal, so would not know to say anything anyway. PPs are right, it will be down to ease and price

Same with many takeaways & restaurants - there are not many complaints about only having halal on the menu, because not many people realise that's the case!

I would prefer that anywhere serving food has to declare if it was halal or not, then at least people can make an informed choice

They do declare it. People don’t care enough to check.

jackstini · 06/01/2025 18:52

They really don't though @GrammarTeacher

I checked menus for restaurants and takeaways near me

None of the menus state halal or not, but 2 of them have halal stickers on their doors. So if ordering from the menu you would not be aware

On apps like Just Eat you can filter for halal, but not for confirmed non-halal

It should be clear everywhere so that those who do care, can for example choose a veggie dish if they want/need to avoid halal

GrammarTeacher · 06/01/2025 19:06

Round here they all have it on their menus

Acommonreader · 06/01/2025 19:18

Odd for you to be concerned about animal welfare unless you only usually consume very high welfare organic meat or are a vegetarian! Cheap school dinner meat will have had a crappy horrible life and death. Halal will no worse than the meat you prefer.

Why do you find it odd for some people to have restrictions on which meat they choose to eat because of how it is slaughtered but deem it reasonable for others to have restrictions on meat they’ve been told a man in the sky forbids them to eat because of how it is slaughtered?

Dksks · 06/01/2025 21:59

Why this whole "man in the sky" denigration?
No one thinks God lives in the sky, and there are valid philosophical and theological arguments to make for an existence of a divine creator.

Really?
Where did the creator come from then?

“He’s uncreated. The question is illogical”

How convenient.
I disagree with him about what is illogical though.

blippityblop5 · 08/01/2025 00:21

I literally do not care if my meat is halal or non halal. It's meat. Who cares?

PurpleFlower1983 · 08/01/2025 00:25

All slaughter methods are grim so I wouldn’t use that as a reason to be honest, although 10 years ago I may have agreed with you. You may need to look at going vegan if that’s your reasoning.
