Embarrassing problem re claustrophobia/underwear

gratefulbutsad · 28/08/2024 13:39

Ok. Firstly. I am a woman. Please do not report me for being a man....

I have an embarrassing predicament. I accidentally stopped wearing knickers over a period of time and now I fear I can never go back. I'm looking for advice, has anyone had similar? Maybe with bras, socks, an item of clothing? How do I go back.. here is the full lowdown. (Pun unintended).

I used to wear knickers around the clock, bed, everyday, gym - that was normal to me and I'm sure all of you.

I was speaking to my partner one day about 6 years ago, telling him that after the gym my underwear is soaked through in sweat. He genuinely asked why I bother wearing them, gym leggings are designed to absorb sweat and keep me cool.

I'd never thought of that before..... and one day tried going commando.

Separately in bed, he sleeps naked and I used to wear knickers under pyjamas or on their own and he used to joke 'what are all these clothes' and over time I just joined him sleeping totally starkers.

I didn't know it at the time but these very small tweaks led me down a path...

Pandemic hit, I lived in gym leggings. I didn't wear knickers. I also put on quite a lot of weight, so when the time came to put them on again, I realised I was SO much more comfy without them!!!

Went on holiday end of summer 2020 and was able to wear bikini bottoms, then by summer 2021, I was so claustrophobic in them that I wouldn't wear them to breakfast and would last on the subbed as long as possible then cave in and put them on just to lay there and swim but take them off to walk back to the room.

I've tried buying so many different types but have also since had a c-section and they itch my keloid scar, they feel tight on my legs, and I don't like the feeling anymore.

I'm so self conscious as this is not normal!!! It's been nearly 5 years since the decline in wearing them started.

I just cannot stand the thought of wearing them!! Help.

AIBU just to be a commando woman the rest of my life? Should I even care? If I feel free and happier then maybe I am being unreasonable on myself. I'm deeply ashamed and embarrassed and would do anything to go back to my non stop knickers days.

Worth mentioning I also used to wear jeans everyday and I can't stand them now, as I got older I just didn't like the feel of them. Even pre pandemic but especially post pandemic when I put on weight anyway. Is getting older becoming for comfortable and sure of who you are???

To my knowledge the MN admin HQ we're monitoring this thread, due to so many of you thinking it couldn't possibly be true that some women prefer to be commando - heaven forbid! They must be men!

@basketofsoftkittens For the avoidance of doubt, as I am one of the posters you mention, I don't think that bodily functions are disgusting. I think other people's vaginal discharge on the seat of a rowing machine or exercise bike is disgusting.

Whether or not some women prefer to go commando, I can say with complete certainty that there will be men on this thread. You're either bafflingly naive or doing it intentionally.
You still haven't expanded on the purpse of this thread, because it certainly doesn't appear to be the purported shame or embarrassment.

CucumberBagel · 28/08/2024 19:22

It's nothing to do with women wanting to go commando - many women do. And there's nothing wrong with it. But there's a lot of men who would get a kick out of the idea of women going commando and would love to hear stories about it...

And those men often have a lack of knowledge when it comes to details about the female anatomy, discharge, periods and our "flaps".

Lovetosleep1 · 28/08/2024 19:31

I'm fine with knickers but hardly ever wear a bra and absolutely never wear wired ones anymore. I felt so uncomfortable and restricted in them I just stopped. I think it's like stopping wearing heels, there's no going back once you put comfort first.
I think it's linked to emotions too, if I'm feeling stressed and overwhelmed I need light, loose clothing. If I'm sad or anxious I need something heavy and warm. I think our bodies know what they need!

I read (the Guardian, if such things matter to you) that every time you fart, you pass some very tiny bit of matter as well. So if your choice is to go without, I think that's fine, but personally I wouldn't want to walk around in a skirt that had shit on it, however tiny that amount of shit was. So if I chose to do as you do, I'd only be wearing my outer clothes once before washing them.

This is the poo crumbs I was talking about 😂

I'm sure someone out there is having a really nice time reading this thread about women and the contents of their underwear. Really quite surprised it hasn't been pulled.

queenofarles · 28/08/2024 22:04

Some have everything very much tucked away, nothing on show (larger flaps basically) and others probably don't have that and maybes that why some feel 'leaks' which I do not.
that’s the strangest thing regarding the female anatomy I’ve ever read 😵‍💫.
nothing holds in ovulation discharge or pr period discharge, not even lululemons leggings.

InsolentNoise · 28/08/2024 22:15

I wear stretchy cotton jersey skirts all the time. I don’t wear underwear because I get too hot and I often can’t get them down in time to pee.
I do have several showers a day, though.

HoneyPie12 · 28/08/2024 22:32

Yep, my husband always laughs as it's a surprise for him if I AM wearing underwear- I'm a mostly don't wear it kind of gal. I don't like the feel of it either, never have xx

Apparently women didn’t wear knickers for the majority of history. This historian has made an Instagram post about it, very interesting.

FarmGirl78 · 28/08/2024 23:15

If they're feeling tight around your legs then you're definitely wearing the wrong size. Have you tried buying no-vpl or seemless knickers in maybe 2 sizes bigger? I'm a 16 but find size 20 high leg is comfiest. Or thongs, but again bigger than needed?

On rare occasions when you feel you need to wear them, then maybe bigger would be comfier. That's what I found. Tight around legs just isn't a thing with well fitting pants. It's nice just lounging round the house in nicks and t-shirt a lot of the time.

It’s not that no one thinks there are women who prefer to go commando. It’s that those women just do it, they don’t need to make a thread asking for others opinions on the Free Fanny Movement.

If I was a pervert (I'm not) or a man (I'm not) why would I waste my time reading vague stories about women talking about their underwear lol you know there are millions of sites out there to cater to these pervy men and I would have to ask anyone getting off on threads like these what sort of pervert they really are lol it baffles me that it's someone's first thought tbh whenever there's a thread about knickers or a vagina it must be a man 🤨 unless they have a fetish for a load of women calling each other names and looking down on each other then I doubt Mumsnet is the place perverts are flocking to to have a wank

Singleandproud · 28/08/2024 14:37

Buy M&S slip culottes for under your skirts.

Underwear is there for hygiene purposes and not wearing any at all is pretty grim when there are plenty of styles to chose. I also think it's pretty grim to sleep naked unless you are washing your bedsheets every night, same with trousers by all means go commando but wash the trousers.

Edited

@Singleandproud

why?

I don't dribble, I don't wet fart (or dry for that matter) what terrible thing is happening when I sleep in my birthday suit??

gratefulbutsad · 29/08/2024 06:41

@Ihopeithinkiknow exactly! Finally someone who uses common sense. I can't understand the notion that men must be trawling MN threads looking for material to get themselves off. Seems like a long and arduous process when the internet is a big place.

They sound cheap leggings. I only wear sweaty Betty or Lululemons, both are brands who do not deal in paper thin legging.

No matter the brand, gym leggings cling like a second skin.

So it’s bizarre you can tolerate that but not knickers.

Do the leggings not catch against your pubic hair?

Yes commando under tights is a must.

Have you quoted the wrong post? What the feck do tights have to do with anything? 😂

BodyKeepingScore · 28/08/2024 14:34

What on earth would be "leaking out"? In the absence of any medical issues, people don't just randomly "leak" and in such instances, trousers would be changed in the same way you'd need to be changing your underwear?

It is normal to have some vaginal discharge.

I've never been back to wired bras after first moving to a maternity bra when pregnant. Never again!

HRCsMumma · 29/08/2024 09:23

Another one who couldn't go knickerless. I'm naturally quite 'moist' down there especially around ovulation time. I sometimes have to wear a small panty liner. Then when on my period I couldn't imagine not wearing underwear!

Also (sorry TMI) doesn't the seam, especially on denim jeans(!!) feel really uncomfortable on your labia?

I couldn't do it for sure.

Bras OTOH I haven't worn since teens. I'm 30 now.. I wear the occasional soft sports bra if I'm wearing a shirt or something and need to cover my nips. Can't stand bras, even the ones that are measured to me.
