OK I'll start by saying I've never really liked Oasis' songs but I think Noel is quite talented. I also like some of the stuff they've both done since Oasis. But whenever I see Liam perform either solo or with the band I can't help but wonder why people rate him so much? He just stands there with his hands behind his back (doesnt ge get neckache?) & hits a tambourine occasionally. He doesn't seem to have much stage presence. Happy to be proved wrong

I was at that gig too

I remember it too hours to get out of the carpark my dh was also there but I had yet to.meet him🤣

PerkyMintDeer · 27/08/2024 18:51

I like their music but I don't like them because I'm from Manchester and they remind me exactly of the crazy guys I spent trying to avoid in the pub. The ones that would swagger in, change the mood and you'd go, "right, that's me off then" because something was about to kick off.

Proper mad fer it.

I was genuinely known as the "snobby bitch" in our local because I didn't want a shag in the alley with a high Liam wannabee whose anorak stunk of weed. "Fook off then yer snobby bitch!" Happy days.

First saw him in front of my own eyes in a small venue - and I mean small. At that point I’d seen some bands where the singer had major charisma, I count Bono on that list as back in the late 80’s he was on fire.
Wasn’t expecting much from Liam, but his charisma absolutely raised the roof off the venue. Noel is talented and can hold a stage in his own way, but in the flesh his brother has whatever ‘it’ is.
I have seen them in bigger venues and arenas, over time I felt the charisma a bit less, as once major success and money comes it can all go off a bit. A few managed to maintain whatever it is that set them apart - Mick Jagger and Freddie Mercury being a case in point.
Chris Martin is a different type but still a great one - it’s a collaborative effort and an experience watching Coldplay.
To love Liam’s presence you have to see it in the flesh, and the songs have to relate to you in some way. Whether like me you were just a Northern working class kid in the 80’s and 90’s or whether you’ve recently discovered them, I know a lot of young kids listen to them now as well.
They aren’t my favourite band by any means, but their early albums take me back to happy time filled with great memories.
If I could back in time and see anyone again it would be David Bowie. Next level everything. Now he has charisma which was magnetic.

What a snobby thread. I’ve always loved them, maybe because I’m Irish and they remind me of my cousins in Manchester. But of course, we’re probably coarse ‘chavs’ to you 🙄🙄

God I'm far from a snob. I was just wondering why a guy who stands there with hid hands behind his back is a good frontman

I used to frequent indie clubs in the 90s and the other clubbers were really friendly and down to earth

I can't really think of anyone who ISN'T better! My favourites though are Michael Hutchence, Freddie Mercury, Brett Anderson, Neil Finn, David Bowie, and my dd's favourite Conan Grey!

He always said ‘I’m not a dancer and I’m a singer. I’ll look stupid dancing about’. That’s not a quote but that’s the kind of thing he used to say. When I was 14 I wanted to marry him lol. I think he’s great!

He would make Bez look good.

PuzzledParrott · 27/08/2024 19:10

Swagger, oozes natural on-stage charisma fuelled by a “no fucks” attitude….. and something else which is quite hard to define. He’s not the best singer in the world but his voice just fits those songs perfectly.

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 27/08/2024 19:11

I know they slagged off Michael Hutchence back in the day but he was outstanding.
Also, in his heyday, absolutely beautiful. 💗

AvocadoDevil · 27/08/2024 19:13

Nothing. They were a 3rd rate pub band.

Do you have to jump about all over the place to be a good frontman? Oasis aren’t a Queen tribute band.
The fact that he does just stand there & sing is actually very refreshing.
His voice, good looks, & attitude are all that’s needed.

Wash your mouth out 🤣. I won't show Dd what you said about Conan. But apart from him I'm not really up on bands these days

I had a snog off Liam once, a hundred years ago, but didn’t take it further so cannot confirm or deny the dirty ashtray escape theory 😁
I never thought he could sing though. How come men can get away with being shit singers and revered frontmen but I honestly can’t think of any women who front bands and actually can’t sing?

Yeah he was amazing live i saw him at at the Heineken festival in roundhey Park in 1995 they headlined ,best of all it was a,free festival!

I’ve seen them four times. First time was Wembley in about 2000, last was last year in Cardiff! They always put on a great show. I do though really regret not seeing them at Glastonbury in 1995 when I was 18, but that was just before they came onto my radar and I was in my first relationship at the time (which was shit) and I couldn’t have done something like go to a music festival. 😒

But yeah, Pulp are awesome!

DungareesAndTrombones · 27/08/2024 19:46

He's not a good front man he's wank.

Bollihobs · 27/08/2024 19:48

"his considered stagewear"

He never takes that parka off, he'll never get the benefit of it when he goes out.....😂

Eldrick47s · 27/08/2024 20:16

Bit of a titbit for anyone interested (and this is genuine).

Oasis weren't originally Oasis (as many will know), and they couldn't use the name Oasis originally....why? Because my brother was in a band called Oasis.

The Gallaghers never got in contact with my brother's band, but their management did (wasn't Alan McGee). My brother's band, for a sum, then agreed to change their name. If I told folk the name that would be too outing; they did keep Oasis in the name, but a word followed it. Noel did mention this in an interview soon after this (I remember it as we laughed our heads off), but I'm not sure if its online, or if he (or anyone associated with the band) mentioned it in a book. My brother's group didnt get that much, the Oasis from Manchester (who followed the Oasis from Northern Ireland) hadn't hit the big time at that point, but they were obviously poised to given them getting in contact to use the name (a poxy act wouldnt have gone to that length).

Regards Liam, he has charisma, on stage and off it. He never looks at the person asking him a question (or at least he never used to). He appeared on an MTV show TRL (total request live) presented by Carson Daly in New York, and when asked how he was, he responded "God like". In terms of his singing, the elongated vowels (Sun-shee-ine) does make him stand out, and the way he sings upward with his arms behind his back is also a unique aspect to his stage presence. Although he isn't in the Freddie Mercury, Mick Jagger, Robert Plant class, he is still a great frontman.

tellingtalessometimes · 27/08/2024 22:58

Stage presence is one thing but what I personally love about him (both G brothers) is the music. He doesn't have to move or dance about because the words and music are so raw. Like a PP mentioned it's quite rare for Britpop bands from the day to be proper working class with tough backgrounds. If anyone knows or has read of their childhood it's awful. The songs convey alot of that. In contrast, Blur and the likes are are all a bunch of middle class champagne socialists pretending they know about the hard life but they don't. Liam and the band do, so their music, to me is enough to want to hear it live. Don't need prancing and fake staged performances.

Ponoka7 · 27/08/2024 23:13

JanefromLondon1 · 27/08/2024 16:17

He's nothing like Mick Jagger. Young Mick Jagger was sexy, Liam would leave a dirty ashtray and an empty pint glass next to the bed and fuck off as soon as he came. Young Mick would have kept you up all night and you wouldn't have cared what he left behind.

I think he's vile. (Liam)

Jaggers love of underage girls would put most of us off him. You need to read the interviews were he's honest about groupies. I don't think anyone who needs that power imbalance and for them to be on drugs, would be a good shag.
