Just that really! I know it's not totally over and we have this bank hol weekend. Just feeling really low at the thoughts of back to school and bad weather and rain and being miserable!! Anyone else.

OP posts:

If you're in London there's supposed to be heatwave next week... according to the BBC!

NotaCoolMum · 23/08/2024 16:13

No! I love the autumn!! Dark snuggly evenings, rainy days, books, hot drinks… bring it on!! 🎃🍂🍁🫖📚

Xiaoxiong · 23/08/2024 16:15

If I don't "lean in" to autumn and then winter, I can be prone to this a bit. I think you have to psych yourself up by thinking instead of the fun of back to school and seeing friends who you haven't seen all summer, the golden light of autumn, long walks kicking leaves, harvest festival, coming in from the cold to hot chocolate and lighting candles, putting up fairy lights, autumn vegetables and abundance, apple crumbles and stews, bonfire night, hallowe'en, the fun of christmas etc.

I know, it all sounds cringe and twee but I do find it works. If you can't get out of it, get into it...

edwinbear · 23/08/2024 16:21

I get it OP, I'm sorting out school uniform, checking pencil cases etc and dreading the early get ups, making packed lunches and the rushing about with after school clubs and endless washing of uniform and sports kits. Plus the endless nagging about homework.

But, we have bonfire night, Halloween and Christmas to look forward to (although Christmas is obviously another huge stress)! Red wine though, it will soon be red wine weather so that's a positive.

lazzapazza · 23/08/2024 16:28

Yes I very much feel this way and usually do so from the middle of July. The thing I dislike the most about Autumn and Winter is the dark evenings and mornings. Late October and November is when I often struggle the most. I have zero interest in Bonfire night, Halloween or Fireworks. They can all fuck off.

On the flip side I do not dislike January and February like many people do. The sunsets are very gradually getting later and I am on the countdown to the clocks going forward. The six nations starting in February the buds starting to appear in the garden early March.

Arrivapercy · 23/08/2024 16:31

Hmm see i am the opposite. The kids and I are looking forward to school again! We have all our lives planned out in term time and the routine suits us. They like school and seeing friends. In my view the childcare available in summer holidays for kids age 4-7 can be quite poor quality, whereas in term time my & my dh job pattern means we do not need much childcare.

I find this bit of summer holiday dull. We have already been away.
Kids are bored, they would love to go back to school now.

OhmygodDont · 23/08/2024 16:33

Yup and it was bloody cold this morning first time I didn’t put a dress on in a while. Very much winter is coming vibes. Sadly. Though we are meant to get some decent weather end of nExt week but I’m looking at that as a one off thing rather than extended summer

Arrivapercy · 23/08/2024 16:34

From this time of year im looking forward to warm coats and frosts, bonfire night & christmas. I don't love january but we book a feb half term holiday and enjoy looking forward to that.

Nope. I dread the onset of summer because I can't stand the heat. I'm ready for autumn and winter.

Some people don't like Halloween or Xmas and don't want to get excited about it.
Agree Op it's a sad time, summers coming to an end. Yanbu.

Lindjam · 23/08/2024 16:40

I don’t mind the dark evenings, but the dark mornings make me really miserable. I have to get up and about early, often leaving home before 6am, and I really struggle to drive in the dark mornings.

DrCoconut · 23/08/2024 16:42

Me. It feels like summer has barely got started and it's pretty much over. It's getting dark earlier and earlier and the wind and rain is back. Wish it was a lovely warm May with June and July still to look forward to. Everything just feels easier in the light and warmth - no thick horrible layers of clothing (why are winter clothes so ugly and frumpy?), no lugging waterproofs and umbrellas round, no scraping ice off the car in the dark, kids sleep better, we can get out to the park even after school instead of being cooped up in the house because it's dark. I don't even get excited about Christmas any more, I'd happily give it up for year round warmth, sun and light nights. Then there's the feeling that another year has gone by that you won't get back (wait until peri menopause if you're still young and don't get it).

WhatNoRaisins · 23/08/2024 16:47

While I'm normally a massive autumn person who can't stand the heat I've found the summer holidays have gone really quickly for me this year. There's still some things I'd like to do before school starts again.

SunQueen24 · 23/08/2024 16:49

Me too. Its hit me more this year I think because it’s the first year DS has been in school. I think the end of the summer hols marks it quite abruptly whereas before school hols mattered to me I just drifted into autumn and always enjoyed September.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 23/08/2024 16:51

I feel the same OP. I wish we could go straight to March. I feel quite down about the thought of 6 months of darkness. I've had a horrible year and the light evenings really helped.

I'm more likely to smother myself under a blanket than snuggle under one with a bastard hot chocolate.

Babyworriesreal · 23/08/2024 16:55

I'm just cross that most of my summer clothes will be packed away again, without being worn. They came out much later than normal because of the cold and rain.

RabbitsRock · 23/08/2024 17:01

September is often a beautiful month. I live in Cornwall & am looking forward to being able to go to the beach minus the crowds. I dislike the shorter days but guess we just have to make the best of it until the Spring.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 23/08/2024 17:06

Me too. I'm a teacher and normally get quite excited about going back, but I still have quite a lot of work left to do over the next week and not sure how I'm going to get it all done! Went into school today and none of the photocopiers were working Hmm

March is a disappointing month for me. You've had months of awful weather and you expect it to start getting better, but it's still cold and rainy.

existentialpain · 23/08/2024 17:57

I feel the same and do every year. I get SAD in winter so the end of summer is a kind of grief.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 23/08/2024 18:00

Errrrr, what summer? Guess you're not in the land of the haggis then, 😂

Tagyoureit · 23/08/2024 18:01

I'm bloody freezing!! And I have the hump because I have a cold and I'm cold! I put the heating on last night and I think I'm going to have to put the duvet back on the bed instead of our summer sheet set! Not happy! Bloody cold!

LlynTegid · 23/08/2024 18:02

Make the most of September. Usually the sun comes out once children are back at school.

I think in general more should be made of September and then autumn in general. Hence why I am opposed to having the clocks go back in late October, I prefer BST all year round.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/08/2024 18:04

We’re in Scotland - schools are back already and we don’t get the bank holiday. Plus we didn’t really have much actual summer. I’m dithering about whether to vacuum pack my summer dresses this weekend or leave it a bit.

TrickorTreacle · 23/08/2024 18:18

It's summer until 21st September. Another 4 weeks.

This issue in this thread is more about the imminent school holiday ending. That is more depressing than the weather.
