To have end of summer blues

spanieleyes22 · 23/08/2024 16:10

Just that really! I know it's not totally over and we have this bank hol weekend. Just feeling really low at the thoughts of back to school and bad weather and rain and being miserable!! Anyone else.

OP posts:
ohtowinthelottery · 23/08/2024 18:21

I felt it was over the other day when I went into Home Bargains and they'd got Back to School, Halloween and Christmas displays out all at the same time!

alloalloallo · 23/08/2024 18:24

I feel the same too. I tend to start getting end of summer blues around the start of August.

I live by the sea and love summer, I love light early mornings and late nights. I love beaches and being able to go for a walk down the seafront for ice creams after dinner, sitting in the pub garden after work or taking the paddle boards and dog down to the beach for an hour in the evening. I love the buzz that summer brings and how it brings my town alive, I love all the activities on this time of year. I love the light and heat and just that sense of freedom summer brings.

I hate when the nights start drawing in, the kids go back to school (although mine have left school so that bit is irrelevant now) and it just all feels depressing.

I detest autumn and I hate winter with every fibre of my being. I don’t want hot chocolate and I don’t want to snuggle. Leaves are rarely crisp and mud gets right on my tits. I hate being cold and damp and having to wear a coat and I’m sick of the sight of my wellies.

TonTonMacoute · 23/08/2024 19:12

Yes me too OP.

This year is even worse because of the terrible weather.

feellikeanalien · 23/08/2024 19:25

Trouble is we won't have a crisp autumn and winter. It will be damp and wet. There won't be any cold crisp snowy days and the leaves will be clumps of wet yuk that stick to your shoes.

I wouldn't mind if we actually had different seasons but if this year is anything to go by it will be damp and wet until at least April 2025 and just slightly colder in winter.

Having said that I have lots of friends living in Portugal complaining of the 40 degree heat but at least they get sunny autumn and winter days. I wouldn't mind so much if it was occasionally sunny and dry but that seems like an impossible wish. I can't remember the last time we had two days in a row when it was sunny with no rain.

Ooo I love Autumn! Crisp cool mornings, the foliage, nights drawing in... I was happy the other day when I put a woolly cardigan on for the first time in months (it didn't stay on for long as the day progressed).
My youngest is off to uni so I'll be in my own for the first time in over 23 years (I'm widow). That will feel weird. But still, I love it 🍁!

Comedycook · 23/08/2024 19:36

I detest winter and the dark nights. I am always so sad when summer is over. It's actually crazy how much my mood is affected by the weather. I tend to kid myself that September is still summer... sometimes the weather can be quite nice. Even October last year was mild. November and December are the pits. I'm always pleased to see January as the days are slowly getting longer. I can feel spring in the air then

the80sweregreat · 23/08/2024 19:38

My prediction is that September and October will be quite warm ( as it was last year)
I am in the south east though

Disturbia81 · 23/08/2024 19:41

RabbitsRock · 23/08/2024 17:01

September is often a beautiful month. I live in Cornwall & am looking forward to being able to go to the beach minus the crowds. I dislike the shorter days but guess we just have to make the best of it until the Spring.

This nails it "we need to make the best of it"
No point being miserable for large parts of the year, it's like wishing your life away

ilovesooty · 23/08/2024 19:45

PassingStranger · 23/08/2024 16:40

Some people don't like Halloween or Xmas and don't want to get excited about it.
Agree Op it's a sad time, summers coming to an end. Yanbu.

Exactly. The golden light of autumn is usually pissing rain anyway.

Thank goodness I'm going away somewhere hot at the end of next week. We've hardly had a summer.

Mimilamore · 23/08/2024 19:47

The cosy, hot chocolate, wooly jumper vibes don't work for me...
It never gets cold enough for all the big jumpers and coats that appear in the shops, it's mostly dank and grey with a chilly wind if you're lucky. I hate all the rushing to get the merch out in shops, pencil cases falling over, witches hats, fireworks and fucking tins of Quality Street.... nope 6 months of misery for me until the leaves green up and the birds sing again...

the80sweregreat · 23/08/2024 19:54

The shops will have the chocolates in soon and Christmas stuff everywhere in a few weeks time
They probably can't wait to foist Christmas on us. Even saw some Christmas bits in Halfords yesterday!

It’s all those mumsnetters wishing the summer away by moaning about the heat.

Are you 'avin' a larf?😁Heat! What heat? About three warm days in mid-June and that was our lot this summer, it hardly seems to have got above 20 degrees where I live!

Doesn't stop some people moaning if the sun comes out for five minutes.

wprrie11 · 23/08/2024 20:02

@spanieleyes22 supposed to be hot until October OP

paddyclampster · 23/08/2024 20:07

I don't think the weather has been THAT bad. June was a bit shit but as I was working it didn't really matter. July and August haven't been bad and there's meant to be a hot spell next week!

Anyway, back to the thread ...

YADNBU! I am already prepared to shove pumpkins up the arses of these cozy, hot choccie under the blankie arseholes who are going on about how excited they are.

I suffer from SAD. I struggle massively with the dark. Even on a wet day in June, at least it's not dark at 4pm!

September probably wouldn't really bother me apart from the fact that it means we are hurtling towards the season that shall not be mentioned!

I only start to feel better in January, knowing that we are the climb out - albeit a long one!

phoenixrosehere · 23/08/2024 20:11

Happy that school is starting soon, happy to be back in a routine where autistic DS isn’t having meltdowns 5 days a week because he doesn’t understand why he can’t go to school and either fighting sleep or waking up at 3-4am.

Our kids thrive on routine and summer is the hardest part of the year for us.

virgocatlover · 23/08/2024 20:14

A heatwave is expected next week and we often have lovely weather in September. Even October can be warm and was last year IIRC.

I find the blues set in for me in November, after the clocks change, it's dark, cold, rainy and just crap.

LadyChilli · 23/08/2024 20:15

lazzapazza · 23/08/2024 16:28

Yes I very much feel this way and usually do so from the middle of July. The thing I dislike the most about Autumn and Winter is the dark evenings and mornings. Late October and November is when I often struggle the most. I have zero interest in Bonfire night, Halloween or Fireworks. They can all fuck off.

On the flip side I do not dislike January and February like many people do. The sunsets are very gradually getting later and I am on the countdown to the clocks going forward. The six nations starting in February the buds starting to appear in the garden early March.

Edited

Apart from the rugby I could have written this. I also find December and Christmas difficult these days. If I had the money and time I'd be booking a long haul holiday to get through it.

fuckssaaaaake · 23/08/2024 20:21

I'm just pissed off my jeans don't fit and it seems I'll need them sooner than normal. Other than that, I love every season to be honest and I love them changing so I can't relate

selldonaterecycle · 23/08/2024 20:23

Absolutely yes to this! I love summer; feeling warm, no coats, a warm house in the morning, eating out, sitting in the garden reading, picnics, going to the beach.
I absolutely hate winter. Dark, cold, rain, grey skies.
But, I am trying to change my mindset a little for autumn this year! Just not sure how I'm going to do it yet! So far on my list I've got Strictly starting and buying a new winter coat. I don't think it's going to work ... 😓

pictoosh · 23/08/2024 20:24

I do agree that the notion of a brisk, golden brown autumn and crisp winter mornings is just that...a notion. A nice idea.

It will be grey, so grey. It will be dark grey. For months. Wet too.

Crunchymum · 23/08/2024 20:26

I always feel a bit melancholy at the end of the summer holidays. Especially so this year as DC1 starts secondary next week (the new Y7 go in a week early so DC has only had a 5 week break)

However we are all much more productive and motivated when we are in the routine of school / hobbies / clubs. The past week we've not been getting up until 9am whereas on a school day I've usually done a whole heap of chores, taken the kids to school, done a quick food shop and logged on to work by 9.30!

I'm back to work on Tuesday after an epic 3 weeks off so despite the predicted heatwave here, summer is pretty much done for us.

I am lucky that I appreciate all the seasons and see the positives in all of them. Bring on Autumn.

DriverMeCrazy · 23/08/2024 20:30

Hate the dark evenings drawing in. I love walking my dog early morning or evening in the summer, in the winter it’s a battle with rain, wind and mud. There’s no Hallmark card picture perfect crisp winter days where I live. It’s grey and windy. And it rains a lot.

Hate the electric and gas bills climbing in winter, hate the traffic that gets so much heavier in the autumn and winter. The winter colds and coughs. The ridiculous rush to ‘start’ Christmas in October. If I could move to the southern hemisphere from October to March I’d be happy.
