To have end of summer blues

spanieleyes22 · 23/08/2024 16:10

Just that really! I know it's not totally over and we have this bank hol weekend. Just feeling really low at the thoughts of back to school and bad weather and rain and being miserable!! Anyone else.

OP posts:
FictionalCharacter · 23/08/2024 20:31

Yes, YABU! It isn't even the end of August, and September and even October can be very sunny and warm.
Why are people talking about Halloween FFS, that's over two months away!

virgocatlover · 23/08/2024 20:14

A heatwave is expected next week and we often have lovely weather in September. Even October can be warm and was last year IIRC.

I find the blues set in for me in November, after the clocks change, it's dark, cold, rainy and just crap.

Think that's me.
I think I'm mid nov to 6th March.
But it is what it is.
You've just got to make the best of it.
That's why they shoved in Christmas where they did.
It's half way between the darkness and the light.
Christmas is the celebration of the light returning.
Besides what not to like about Christmas?
Good food , drink and chocolate?

Yeah I'm.under a blanket. The curtains are not shut yet but outside the sky is grey and the trees are black and blustery. It's not a nice feeling thinking of all the dark and coldness ahead.

tillyandmilly · 23/08/2024 20:42

I love the Autumn - especially wear jumpers and boots - hate summer clothes!

I enthusiastically washed all my throws in June and put them in the airing cupboard ... I was getting them out again the first week of July, been huddled under one most nights!

No! I love the autumn!! Dark snuggly evenings, rainy days, books, hot drinks… bring it on!! 🎃🍂🍁🫖📚

It didn't take long for a "snuggly" to appear Hmm

I'm with you @spanieleyes22

Mumsnetters love autumn and winter. They love festering snuggling under blankets drinking hot chocolate all day. They have excellent eyesight that isn't affected by low light. They don't drive on dark, wet or snowy roads to get to work. They hate summer and nice warm days with long daylight hours and they love Halloween and Christmas.

offyoujollywelltrot · 23/08/2024 16:35

Nope. I dread the onset of summer because I can't stand the heat. I'm ready for autumn and winter.

Same here!

DysonSphere · 23/08/2024 20:50

@Mimilamore It never gets cold enough for all the big jumpers and coats that appear in the shops,

Er speak for yourself, I freeze and can barely afford to turn the heater on, so sit encased in layers upon layers looking like Mr Michelin Mans' wife and struggle to find heavy woollen skirts and jumpers in the shops. A couple tears ago I went looking for a heavy long woollen skirt. I could only find tiny mini woollen or tartan skirts.

Although I really suffer in the Summer heat, I lost a close relative earlier this year and am already feeling the later sunrises and am not looking forward to dark winter as I feel the grief will just feel harder to keep at bay.

Bonfire Night is Bonfire Months where I live, so the fireworks go on for months. So not looking forward to that. I like that everything stops at Xmas. But I find the sudden activity again in dark January rough. Xmas should officially stop in February imo!

What I want is for the clock to stop going back in Winter. Just stop. I wish they would consider people's mental health. Darkness at 3pm sucks.

wonderingwhatlifemeans · 23/08/2024 20:57

I feel a bit weird this year. I am a teacher so normally I would be heading into school next week to get things ready. For the first time in 25 years I don't have a job in September! I am going to be job hunting to hopefully start somewhere in October but it is really weird, no books to label, no plans to write, no timetable to fill in and no colleagues to chat to!

Also my FB is full of American teachers getting their classrooms ready so a constant reminder of what I don't have yet!

If I don't "lean in" to autumn and then winter, I can be prone to this a bit. I think you have to psych yourself up by thinking instead of the fun of back to school and seeing friends who you haven't seen all summer, the golden light of autumn, long walks kicking leaves, harvest festival, coming in from the cold to hot chocolate and lighting candles, putting up fairy lights, autumn vegetables and abundance, apple crumbles and stews, bonfire night, hallowe'en, the fun of christmas etc.

I know, it all sounds cringe and twee but I do find it works. If you can't get out of it, get into it...

This is my strategy to be honest!

RampantIvy · 23/08/2024 21:00

What summer heat?

We haven't had much hot weather over the last two years (where I live). We have had some pleasantly warm weather over the last month, but it feels really autumnal now.

It's the long dark nights I hate. I love bright weather and can tolerate the cold as long as it is bright.

I’m so excited for autumn, this is how I feel when summer starts. It’s not over yet though.

Yea I can totally understand this. Sadness and grief always feels worse when it's dark and cold.

WantingMoreCareer · 23/08/2024 21:16

Thanks to the posters who have posted nice things about autumn and wintry things coming. It did spark a bit of joy.

I’m with the summer lovers though. I’m really enjoying the summer holiday and another couple of weeks would be just lovely. I don’t feel ready to get back to the school routine/clubs etc just yet.

I do better in the sun and heat. I get SAD in winter, although it try various things to combat it, and with the start of the school year I see my little one getting another year older, which of course is a delight and a privilege, but I am prone to getting all melancholiac about it.

I’ll make the most of the next week or so!

LindorDoubleChoc · 23/08/2024 21:31

In England at least the best month of the year is still to come - September is nearly always warm and sunny. The beautiful colours and "crisp" feeling of Autumn last well into late October.

November, December and January can be a bit grim, granted.

RampantIvy · 23/08/2024 21:38

and "crisp" feeling of Autumn

I love crisp, bright autumn days. Sadly, they are as rare as hen's teeth round here. Usually it is damp and grey.

I'm bloody freezing!! And I have the hump because I have a cold and I'm cold! I put the heating on last night and I think I'm going to have to put the duvet back on the bed instead of our summer sheet set! Not happy! Bloody cold!

Ooh, I was going to keep quiet about putting the heating on last night too… but I’ll confess now!!

I DID IT!!!!

it was only for an hour, it was dark early and raining, and the washing needed to dry… and I was damn cold and despite putting more clothes on, just couldn’t warm up.

Im guilty 😔

I'm guilty, I'll put the heating on if I'm cold and I was fricking Elsa yesterday!

itsalwaysthesame · 23/08/2024 21:52

No, I love it when summer ends, I sleep better, don't spend all day sweating & uncomfortable, no sun cream to apply to kids who don't want it, less flies, earlier to bed, I don't feel guilty to "make the most" of a hot day. I like autumn, spring and a winter but really dislike the summer.

Also don't have to listen to those people who say "the hotter the better" when I'm boiling hot and irritated. I can eat proper meals too as hate cooking in summer.

TheBirdintheCave · 23/08/2024 21:57

Still an entire month of summer to go! :)

Waytoomanycoasters · 23/08/2024 22:08

I LOVE Autumn! Firepits, cosy knitwear, crumbles, stews, trees changing colours, the first frost... all these things make me feel excited from the end of September when I generally start noticing the darker evenings and crisper days.

But this is the first school holiday summer for us and I must say I've loved having the littles around more. It's been completely lush to have no agenda and nothing to rush for. Not overjoyed at the prospect of that ending in exchange for arguments over getting shoes on and getting out the door.

paddyclampster · 23/08/2024 22:09

Hate crumble. Hate stew. Hate hot chocolate. Hate wearing jumpers.

I love this. I’ve definitely tried to embrace this in recent years and it’s really helped. Autumn is now my favourite time of year!
Still working on liking winter though..!
