To have end of summer blues

Just that really! I know it's not totally over and we have this bank hol weekend. Just feeling really low at the thoughts of back to school and bad weather and rain and being miserable!! Anyone else.

I'm on the fence at the moment.

I'm a teacher so have been home with DS and DH (he had still worked but had some time off too). It's always lovely to have some down time, to do things with DS and we had a lovely holiday in Austria too.

Term time is very hectic so I don't look forward to the madness re-starting and living life at a 100mph!

That said, I mostly like my job and DS likes school which is good. He will be happy to see his friends and is looking forward to Y6.
I am looking forward to seeing pupils again and getting to know the new Y7s. It's quite a nice time in schools, despite how busy it is.
It's an 8 week half term though followed by 7 to Christmas so it will be long and hard!

Weather - I just think it is what it is. I'm not hugely keen on dark mornings but I do love the colours of Autumn!

Yes, this is it exactly. I feel that if we had proper seasons, and some sunlight in autumn and winter, it wouldn’t get so many people down. As it is, the cold, crisp conditions people keep mentioning rarely seem to happen here, and it is the endless grey, non-descript, slightly too mild but neither one thing nor the other type conditions which we have so much which means you can’t even embrace the dreaded ‘snuggling’ activities!

I agree. All the 'snuggling' and 'crisp autumn leaves' is just a fantasy now.

It's wet. And mild. And grey. And muddy. And windy.

And your stylish winter coat is too hot for it.

And no amount of hot chocolate is going to lift the gloom.

GalacticalFarce · 24/08/2024 08:42

I hate the dark more than the weather. I like to get and about and the dark around 4ish is depressing.
I've been loving my evening walks in the woods and the clocks going back annoys me so much.
I can see the joys of all the autumn stuff too but for me all the soups and blankets have to be balanced with fresh air, some sun and getting out. That's hard to do some days.

KimberleyClark · 24/08/2024 08:44

Used to feel this when working, especially after the August bank holiday when it seemed like a huge long stretch until Christmas. Not now I’m retired though.

the80sweregreat · 24/08/2024 10:26

Feels like the end of the world today with really heavy rain and grey skies.

mydogisthebest · 24/08/2024 10:59

I am already hating that it's getting dark so early. I don't mind quite so much about the temperature but the dark mornings and evenings I just hate so much. I find it so depressing.

We haven't really had that great a summer either. Cold, rain, cold, rain repeat and then a week of far too hot and humid days. Awful

We’re in Scotland - schools are back already and we don’t get the bank holiday. Plus we didn’t really have much actual summer. I’m dithering about whether to vacuum pack my summer dresses this weekend or leave it a bit.

This!!! It feels like autumn already. Yesterday the rain was lashing horizontally into my face and this weekend I'm digging out the scarves, gloves and hats. I've not been away on holiday this year and I feel cheated out of a whole summer I tell ye!! Bah humbug.

paddyclampster · 24/08/2024 11:10

Woke up in a rage about the autumn / winter lovers!!

Another thing I am dreading is all the illness. Everyone feeling shit all the time. I’m a teacher and schools are like a Petri dish. Even in a high school it’s like an orchestra of coughs and sneezes. We do build up an immunity for it’s grim.

I think because we’ve had the holidays we can take advantage of the nice days when they come along and just do boring jobs in the bad days.

Also, the stretch from September to Xmas is always the most gruelling as we enter into the shitty darker days.

RampantIvy · 24/08/2024 11:20

but for me all the soups and blankets have to be balanced with fresh air, some sun and getting out. That's hard to do some days.

I agree @GalacticalFarce.
I wonder if the soup, hot chocolate and blanket lovers never go outside at all?

Agree, the dark is the worst bit. I can cope with cold...I just like the sunlight

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 24/08/2024 11:25

Here in South Wales it usually rains from October to March, not many frosts, just rain and more rain, the skies are grey, everything is dank and the garden turns into a muddy mess. I'd prefer really cold dry weather, at least you still see blue skies with that.
From Monday though the weather app is showing at least 10 days with full sun and no rain, temperatures up to 24! I haven't seen that type of forecast all summer, it's been 2 or 3 good days then rain, going to be wonderful!

Definitely go outside in all weathers which makes the inside stuff even better.

Last winter I took to sitting in my garden every morning with a coffee...bundled up in my coat....dh thought i was mad but it hugely helped my mood.

If you're in London there's supposed to be heatwave next week... according to the BBC!

I know. And the sun came out big time as soon as the school holidays started with a couple of mini heatwaves thrown in and more to come, as you've written. It really depends so much on where you live

I should live in N Yorkshire and I spend as much time there as I can but sadly my DH has a zillion connections here and wouldn't move and we have other ties here too. I'd love to be complaining about a lack of summer although tbf, my kids are grown up now

I think the 'Go outside in all weathers and come back in and snuggle with your crumble and hot choccy' only works if you have an open fireplace in your house somewhere. Preferably your living room. With a pet included.

Coming back to chilly boring radiators isn't half as inviting or exciting and there's no desire to go out in the cold and return. I'd love to install a log burner to bring some cheer and real thermal comforting heat in, but renting doesn't permit.

Radiators aren't comforting in the depths of winter.

freespirit333 · 24/08/2024 14:17

Me! I love being out of the school routine and always take a big chunk of leave in the holidays so I definitely get those back to school/routine blues. And in classic September fashion the weather looks glorious for the first week!

Disturbia81 · 24/08/2024 14:24

@DysonSphere I don't have a proper fire but an electric heater with fake fire effect, works a treat.

Disturbia81 · 24/08/2024 14:29

@pictoosh @Comedycook Exactly, some of the winter haters don't get it.. think we're inside all the time. I put myself out in all temps, rain etc and it's the contrast of coming back into the warmth and appreciating that that contributes heavily to the enjoyment of the cosiness 😆 I work outside and still love winter. it's all about trying to make the best of every season or we'll be miserable, grumpy and wishing time away.

paddyclampster · 24/08/2024 14:36

I’m in the garden right now - it’s sunny up North! Mentally shoving 2 fingers up to the snugly, hot choccy types and shoving a spiced pumpkin up their arses. Oh and shoving a load of crisp frozen leaves over their heads!!!

DysonSphere · 24/08/2024 14:43

Disturbia81 · 24/08/2024 14:24

@DysonSphere I don't have a proper fire but an electric heater with fake fire effect, works a treat.

Is it as convincing (to the mind I mean) as a real fire? Truly?

Alright I'm going to look into getting one. I just can't take the lack of cheer.

Disturbia81 · 24/08/2024 15:26

@DysonSphere The smell isn't there but it really does create a similar atmosphere, it makes my living room feel really nice.. if I didn't have it then yes I would feel like my house is really uninviting just with radiators so I get you. Hang on I'll find the link to mine

It's really nothing like a real fire.

@ForGreyKoala But much better than nothing.
