So much for rioters deterrent sentences

GPTec1 · 07/08/2024 12:29

4 sentenced so far : 2 weeks, 3 years and two lots of 18months... for violence, attacking the emergency services, burning out a Police car, violent disorder & looting.

Quite honestly these sentences are beyond pathetic and will not stop anyone rioting.

Then we have very weak policing & lack of police numbers.

How do you know that?? You don't....

Sirzy · 07/08/2024 12:35

I think they will make many think twice. Add into that the fact the sentences will mean loss of jobs etc too.

how long where you expecting them to be sentenced to?

WickieRoy · 07/08/2024 12:35

I think both 3 years and 18 months are pretty hefty sentences that will hopefully act as a deterrent - and have many more lying awake at night waiting for their turn to be arrested.

Maddy70 · 07/08/2024 12:36

Also means potential loss of jobs. When the new EU travel estas come in they may be refused

VanCleefArpels · 07/08/2024 12:36

They will however completely fuck up those peoples future employment prospects so there that….

Normallynumb · 07/08/2024 12:37

Hopefully they will be a deterrent for the planned riots tonight
One of them was guilty of inciting hate online too

Begsthequestion · 07/08/2024 12:38

Maybe some of the judges support them. It's not exactly an institution that is a bastion of egalitarianism is it

It won't stop them being self employed in most cases, except maybe for professional roles where even self employed are vetted (financial services etc).

OlympicsFanGirl · 07/08/2024 12:38

Prison sentences of any duration are significant and the duration will be dependent on what the person actually did and any previous.

So YABU

Kebarbra · 07/08/2024 12:38

Of course it will deter some people at least, going to prison isn't just about the time spend serving, it has many implications (rightly or wrongly) on future prospects. If you want a real shock on sentences plenty of rape, manslaughter, death by dangerous driving sentences to be horrified at.

Ponoka7 · 07/08/2024 12:39

Are you and yours applying to the Police and add on services? Were are they expected to pluck trained officers from?

crumblingschools · 07/08/2024 12:43

I wouldn't want to spend anytime in prison. Bet no-one thought whilst they were lobbing bricks and confronting the police that they might end up in prison, bet most thought they would get was suspended sentence/community service

crumblingschools · 07/08/2024 12:44

I wonder if it will stop people attending the counter protests as wouldn't want to risk getting a prison sentence

materialgworl · 07/08/2024 12:44

2 weeks in prison may seem low but a criminal conviction nonetheless

Paganpentacle · 07/08/2024 12:45

Police don't decide on sentencing.
Judges are bound by sentencing guidelines and they are limited to what they can hand down.
I'm thinking water cannons in the first place would have been a better option...

Neither do you.

Its my opinion and if JSO protestors get 5 years for non violent acts, why is smashing up a town centre, attacking the Police and burning emg service vehicles only worthy of 18months?

120 protests planned, MPs told to work from home.

How bad do you want it to get?

I know that.

Rioting sentencing guidelines are 3 to 9 years with a max of 10 years.

Yes water canon but i understand that would require a change in the law, so irrelevant in terms of timescales.

Did you actually read much into the JSO sentences? All had previous convictions (which is taken into account when sentencing), and the length aligned with what they had done. Despite the narrative they were trying to push, they weren't imprisoned simply for peaceful protest.

Watch an influx of tradesman and builders labourers available for work soon….This is why if I’m having any work done on my home, I will only be employing those recommended to me, and will be googling their names. I will be doing my best to avoid giving any of these rioters a job opportunity.

PeachSnake · 07/08/2024 12:57

What I don't get is people saying these are middle class citizens from educated backgrounds, they aren't, you can see by the photos that they are mindless uneducated oxygen thieves.

WickieRoy · 07/08/2024 13:01

You can tell someone's education level by their picture now?

Mrsdyna · 07/08/2024 13:03

We don't have space in the prisons.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 07/08/2024 13:04

Many of us know the type of animals running around destroying cars and setting fire to hotels. They were the ones at school who kept bunking off, weren’t interested, made ‘Swots’ lives hell. When teachers tried to discipline them, their mum, if she could be bothered, would ‘come up the school’ to scream at the teacher.

They left school at the first opportunity, with a reading age of 7 at best. They worked cash in hand in a trade, clocking off early on a Friday to go ‘up the pub’ and get coked up with the lads. Somehow they always seem to have a woman willing to take them on. Their poor neighbours have to listen to them effing and blinding. Their kids are out all hours, and when they go to school make the other kids and teachers lives hell.

They resent anyone who’s lives are more successful than there’s despite having done nothing to improve their own lives. They resent it even more if that person isn’t white.

When they reach retirement age they talk about having ‘worked all their lives’ when in reality they’ve been subsidised and have cost money, due to numerous A&E visits and lung issues from the fags.

Now them and their kids are running around like a pack of animals with England tattoos and flags, calling themselves patriots when they contribute the square root of fuck all and just take.

OneTC · 07/08/2024 13:04

In light of 21 years handed down to the jso people it's pretty lightweight

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/08/2024 13:04

Agree about the JSO protesters and their previous convictions @Kebarbra, though TBH I'd be very surprised if none of these latest folk have them too

No matter how "frustrated" it takes a certain type of person to behave as they have, but then perhaps they've just not been caught and/or prosecuted over anything they may have been involved in before
