So much for rioters deterrent sentences

GPTec1 · 07/08/2024 12:29

4 sentenced so far : 2 weeks, 3 years and two lots of 18months... for violence, attacking the emergency services, burning out a Police car, violent disorder & looting.

Quite honestly these sentences are beyond pathetic and will not stop anyone rioting.

Then we have very weak policing & lack of police numbers.

It might deter some of the dickheads that are just joining in 'for a laugh', you know like those stupid girls with their arms full of cheap croc knock offs and lush bath bombs in hull, the ones laughing and joking with their mates as if they've just done something fun and a bit naughty. It won't deter those that travel to riot and commit violence

Hang on, weren't some posh kids in the news during BLM for smashing up stuff?

Yes they were especially in The US smashing up predominantly black neighbourhoods !

But if it does deter some of the hangers on there will be fewer for the police to deal with and every little helps. The best deterrent would be heavy rainfall. Someone on radio the other said 'odd how so few riots happen on days when it's chucking it down with rain'

Prison is life -wrecking. Even a short sentence is extremely harsh for someone who's never been locked up before.

This is true

Absolutely agree, DH and I were just saying that we need some proper lashing it down rain

SnowmanInTheSun · 07/08/2024 20:24

The sentences are too soft when compared to the sentences of black and brown people during other significant riots in the UK. The law seems to come down harsh on POC whereas we seem to be seeing a soft touch approach for these white thugs.

MellersSmellers · 07/08/2024 20:27

You need to trust the judges who are hearing the evidence and who are obliged to abide by sentencing guidelines!
Don't forget they will all have criminal records, and as others have said many will lose their jobs.

Anyotherdude · 07/08/2024 20:42

There are guidelines beyond which sentences cannot be exceeded…https://www.gov.uk/how-sentences-are-worked-out
Just because you think they are lenient, doesn’t mean they are. Judges have to study diligently, pass exams and exercise wisdom in laying the law down - why else do you think they are paid so much?
If you were a judge yourself, you wouldn’t be making such a statement.

How sentences are worked out

If you are found guilty of a crime, your sentence will depend on a number of factors, including the type, seriousness and circumstances of the crime.

Oh I didn't know about those. I was thinking posh floppy hair arresting statues kind of thing

I agree OP. Not enough time. They'll be back on the streets looking for more trouble in no time. No wonder many criminals don't take the system seriously, as they've said so themselves. 3 years should be the minimum.

You can tell what they’re like by what they look like eh?

This sounds worryingly like um…prejudice.

Well to be fair, whilst I ain't no rocket scientist I have been around a few years and have a reasonable judgement of appearance 😄

UnicornAndSparkles · 07/08/2024 20:57

I'm sure the sentencing judge will have a better idea of an appropriate sentence than a MN poster!

Sentencing depends on a multitude of factors including prison spaces. Our prisons are at full capacity.

SnowmanInTheSun · 07/08/2024 21:46

The average sentence for rioters in Bradford in 2001 was 4-5 years. The longest sentence was 8 and a half years. It will be interesting to see the difference in sentencing for similar/same crimes when the perpetrators are white.

Prison won't deter them, they have no jobs to lose. Maybe withhold benefits and social housing

This. Affect all benefits and their housing. Maybe then they’ll think twice when they actually have something to lose.

I agree. I think this is way more than just violence. This is organised and racially motivated. The sentences are pathetic.

The problem with that is if they lose their home what happens when they get out and can’t find another place to rent. Do they commit another crime to go back to jail. Some may say and others may agree, a prison cell with 3 hot meals a day and a bed is better than sleeping on the streets. After all there’s nothing more dangerous than a person with nothing left to lose. Also not everyone involved in the riots will be renting their homes will they

Dotjones · 09/08/2024 10:36

I think the sentences are probably about right. They're comparable to the sentences handed down to climate activists recently so I think it shows that people who cause disruption are being treated evenly. I was concerned that the immigration protestors would be treated more harshly than the climate protestors but it seems that that isn't really the case, the justice system is treating them as being very similar. Both cause harm to society, both have viewpoints that have supporters and detractors, both should be locked up.

ASimpleLampoon · 09/08/2024 10:42

They are terrorists and should be treated as such. All of them, and there should be zero tolerance.

Purplebunnie · 07/08/2024 16:59

"Thing is we don’t have the space so how many will just be out and about with a sentence that only kicks in it they reoffend."

We have the boat we were going to put immigrants in, put them in there and take it out to the middle of the channel, if the escape they won't be going far

They'd probably try it and claim asylum as they seem to think that's an easy life 😂
