It would deter most people I think to know they would go to prison at all. Obviously not those with strings of convictions, but many of the rioters won’t be those people - they’ll be idiots who thought they could get away with it.

How long did the Bolton rioters get? Do we know? Or do we know the sentence of the man who punched the female officer in Manchester? Or is it just white people who get very fast hearings and actual sentences?

We don't do very long sentences in the UK. I've known 5.5 years for a coma and life changing injuries. I've known 4.5 years for someone who smothered his own infant step daughter. These seem like short sentences, but they're not when compared to many crimes.

Their kids are out all hours, and when they go to school make the other kids and teachers lives hell.

They resent anyone who’s lives are more successful than there’s despite having done nothing to improve their own lives. They resent it even more if that person isn’t white.

When they reach retirement age they talk about having ‘worked all their lives’ when in reality they’ve been subsidised and have cost money, due to numerous A&E visits and lung issues from the fags.

Now them and their kids are running around like a pack of animals with England tattoos and flags, calling themselves patriots when they contribute the square root of fuck all and just take.

I would love it if they all got ten years but to be honest I still think 3 years is good. There are loads of protests planned for tonight. If I was someone who was tempted to go along tonight and beat up people/smash up buildings I'd really think twice about it. I don't want to spend three years in prison, have a criminal record, lose my job, not be able to travel abroad. Pretty good deterrent in my opinion.

The cases that have made it to court are the more minor straight forward ones, they will not attract the longer sentences, those who were organising or did more harm may need a jury trial which obviously takes far longer to arrange.

They were also trying on the guaranteed conviction charges to set an example to ward off potential thugs tonight, terrorism charges are being mooted for some but the burden of proof is higher than "we saw you thump a police officer on CCTV!"

They are doing lots of arrests and charges but these things take time. Things are actually moving very quickly when people have been identified and many are being remanded in custody after being charged which keeps them off the streets now too.

some people do seem to have very unrealistic expectations as to what can be done in the space of a few days!

Reminds me of the Jan 6 riots in America. At least those sentenced there felt some real consequences.

I know that was attacks against Congress and government buildings, but give these thugs time, I guess. It's unbelievable.

4 sentenced so far : 2 weeks, 3 years and two lots of 18months... for violence, attacking the emergency services, burning out a Police car, violent disorder & looting.

Quite honestly these sentences are beyond pathetic and will not stop anyone rioting.

Then we have very weak policing & lack of police numbers.

Arrested and sentenced in days bet they were not expecting that when they went out to tear up streets and fight with the first person that stood in their way.!

He's there (or he was) and this is him (and his silblings) to a tee

I'll give him credit-his reading age is about 9 rather than 7

His mother is 'that' mother-no matter what they did wrong,its 'not MY kids!' (She's proud of the time my ex swore at a teacher,who had caught him selling fags aged about 8 in the playground-she stomped into school and punched the teacher-not a one off by any means)

4 out of her 5 adult children now have kids of their own-one lives with her mother and rarely sees her dad (who has another dd to his wife) and I'd say the mum is doing a good job with her dd-shes a sweetheart-the rest,not so much

The cycle continues with this generation

Just done a quick name change .. to stop things being connected.

One of the rioters was at school with DD. Nice a school, nice area, good results.

From primary he was “that kid”, running around, fighting, hurting other kids, getting his trouble. His home life was a bit of a mess, with various boyfriends in and out (with snarly dogs), always late, wrong uniform, wrong kit, messy etc etc

I do feel a bit sorry for him, failed by parent & and school - you could see, years ago, where this was going to end up. I can see how people get involved (although these riots are against everting I believe in). Help for young people like that is non-existent
