Bloody McDonald's

I absolutely realise that this a first world problem and I'm sure some witty MNer will be along shortly to tell me I'm unreasonable for even eating McDonald's but regardless...

We don't have it often but do enjoy the breakfasts so took the dc today after we'd been swimming. Dd was desperate for a nap at this point so went through the drive thru thinking we'd be quick. But no we got 'can you park in a bay please' and waited 20 minutes before I had to go in and remind them we were waiting. The order was sat in a bag going cold waiting for someone to bring it out.

This happens all the time. 90% of the times we go we end up having to park up and either wait ages or go in to find we've been forgotten. The staff are busy and it seems they prioritise just eat/uber eats orders rather than the customers who are actually there.

No point complaining because a massive corporation like McDonald's won't give a shit but would it be unreasonable next time to just say sorry I can't park in a bay, we're in a rush I'll just wait here in the drive thru? It would probably hurry it up and anyway why should they take more orders before fulfilling the ones already waiting?

Again, I know it's a first world problem but it irritates the life out of me!!

I don’t think it would be at all unreasonable to wait in the drive through - surely that’s what it’s for, and I think if you were just sitting there, they’d hurry your order up in order to get rid of you!

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 01/08/2024 11:08

This annoys me too. It helps them artifically maintain their stats by saying customers get 'thru' the drive thru in X minutes because the time parked in the bay doesn't count.

Exactly what I thought but I'm not sure I'd have the courage to do it. I don't want to get shirty with the staff as most of them are young teens and working hard but the management and customer service is dire. Also winds me up how online orders are prioritised over the people actually waiting there and then.

Sounds poorly organised at that restaurant.

I don't go there often but when I do its always pretty fast.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/08/2024 11:11

You know in all likelihood if you park up and wait your food will be cold, but you still choose to not just park up and one of you go in to grab the food. So yes, yabu, because you keep doing the same thing expecting different results which is the definition of insanity

WhatWouldHopperDo · 01/08/2024 11:12

My DS works at Maccies and they all HATE the Uber Eats/Just Eat orders - the drivers are impatient and stand there hassling them.

Where DS works, the park up bays are still in full view of the pick up window so they can see if a car has been sitting there for too long. I think that helps.

We've never had to wait long at either of our local ones but yes, drive through is meant to be quick and convenient so waiting 20 minutes is infurating. DS says people do refuse and just wait in the drive through line.

Well the definition of drive through means to drive through. It's not always easy to unbuckle dc and carry them in when we're in a rush. Hence why I choose to drive through. But you're right, expecting different results when I've had so many bad experiences is pretty daft. You're also waiting ages when you go in so they're not really fulfilling the 'fast food' quota either. Would probably be quicker to get served in a cafe but again, that's not what I wanted today when I was in a rush to get home.

You don't think it would be unreasonable to delay/inconvience the whole line behind?

Icannoteven · 01/08/2024 11:18

YANBU.

Mcdonalds can no longer be considered fast food. You spend longer waiting that you would in a cafe or restaurant.

It is also no longer cheap! What is it even for?

We were in there yesterday, out of necessity (it’s still the most convenient place to eat in a hurry with coeliacs - as long as you take your own bun) and it took over 15 minutes to get served. The whole time the order and fryer beepers we’re going off CONSTANTLY. It was extremely unpleasant to eat inside. They were also out of sauce and napkins 🫤

It’s not just Uber eats order that are the problem. They are hugely understaffing.

lilyrabbit2 · 01/08/2024 11:19

@BillStickersWillBeProsocuted why should they be taking more orders before fulfilling the ones they've already got? I didn't order anything special (like a burger minus the pickles which may need to be made separately). So there shouldn't be any need to wait excessively.

Vote with your money.

Having has cold fries in store as well as drive through they can bugger off.

Sadly I don't think they'd miss me. A big corporation like that will never struggle no matter how shit their customer service is.

Luddite26 · 01/08/2024 11:24

It's the understaffing that is causing this problem not any of the other customers -including just eat etc.
We go in the restaurant and a few weeks ago we waited 55 minutes to be brought to the table. We have started going at 3 instead of 6.40pm as it's a better service but it's a very common problem in McDonald's these days. I don't think yabu to say no I will wait here. They need to pay for more staff.

Their recent profits are well down and they're reviewing pricing and their business strategy right now. They are feeling it.

It makes absolutely no difference whether you customise it now or not, they don't make "standard" burgers to hold anymore so everything is only assembled when you order it.

CraftyOtter · 01/08/2024 11:31

I hate the way McDonald’s is now.

I miss the days when you went to the till, ordered they turned round picked it up and off you went. I assume they were probably wasting food that way though - having almost everything on the menu ready cooked and on the shelf.

I never use the drive thru at all now, if I’m going to have to park up anyway I might as well go in - at least they won’t forget I’m there.

Devilsmommy · 01/08/2024 11:36

It always pisses me off in any food place now that they do seem to care more about delivery orders than the orders from people standing right in front of them 🤨

Lasttraintolondon · 01/08/2024 11:41

I've given up on them completely. Stood behind a line of driver in motorcycle gear loading up deliveries for uber eats, waiting an age for food, more expensive than ever. Not to mention the grim and grubby touchscreen I have to touch to make my order. Ugh. Clearly someone with an MBA and some lean six sigma thought they could improve things there and they are so, so much worse.

So they can start preparing those orders too

You're complaining they're too slow whilst also championing suggestions that would make them slower!

lilyrabbit2 · 01/08/2024 11:53

@BillStickersWillBeProsocuted no I'm saying they should prioritise the orders that are waiting before moving onto the next. That may make them slower to serve people but at least people would get their food and be off as you'd expect from a drive through service.

OP posts:
Hateam · 01/08/2024 12:06

I'm finding that at many fast food restaurants the Uber/just Eat customers are always given priority.

At my local fish n chip shop I often have to wait whilst moped riders seem to come go quickly.

Hateam · 01/08/2024 12:08

I do think you're wrong to just wait by the window. You're holding up the queue for everybody else.

deviantfeline · 01/08/2024 12:09

When and Why did they stop having burgers ready to go on that shute thing? That was proper fast food. They churned over so many that I can't imagine they wasted much. Surely a McD burger costs pennies to make anyway.

I'm guessing it's when they moved from the 'no fucking around'(tm) standard menu of Hamburger, Cheeseburger, QuarterPounder, Fillet o Fish, Big Mac and Nuggies with small or large fries to a complicado smorgasbord of 50 different burger combos and eleventy million random sides.

It's like Concorde. Who knew air travel would be quicker in the 80s than it is now and who knew fast food could be slower and shitter.

Huh? Op hasn't said that's what they did.

WafflingDreamer · 01/08/2024 12:14

Our drive thru McDonalds is like this all the time. I hate eating inside as it has no air-con and is like a greenhouse even in the middle of winter. We always have to park up and wait for at least 10 minutes and we never order anything that would need to be modified. I always forget to check the order as I'm so grateful its arrived and we are nearly always missing something. One time they forgot all our chips and drinks then I had to drag everyone inside and bloody queue in order to speak to anyone about the order.

The only reason we go is because we get an NHS discount
