To think Tattle Life gossiping is necessary?

bottomsup12 · 25/07/2024 08:29

Immediately thoughts are that it's not nice to gossip and everyone should "be kind". However, in this day and age of social media influencers etc, everyone acknowledges that people show the best bits of their life, all the ups and rarely the downsides.

We are also told to stop comparing to others on this basis as we never know what's going on behind someone's glamorous life.

Therefore, I put it to you MNers, that the b*tchiness that occurs on Tattle Life (and is IS very much so) is a necessary antidote to the fake lives we can't help comparing ourselves to.

Instead of sitting here wondering how everyone else manages to have such a great time while you're broke hardly able to pay your bills, it's reassuring to see other people cutting through the crap and pointing out the other parts of their life.

I'd argue it's a necessary by product of social media antics and the naturally occurring ying to the social media glamorous yang!

What are your thoughts?

They exposed Jack Monroe, so I've got to give them that. Oh and Sali Hughes. And Schofield.

Also, I despise the toxic positivity and shilling expensive useless products that influencers do. Exposing and critiquing them is the wisdom of hoi polloi in action, imo.

A friend told me to read it to find out about either Huw's bum it was or Schofield, whichever scandal came first.

They seem to get all the info ahead of everyone else.

What's Sali Hughes done wrong?
I quite like her articles - what am I missing?

Babachew · 26/07/2024 17:28

Tattle is like an encyclopedia of facts.
Very useful for due diligence.

What on Earth has Sally Hughes done? I've never known anybody in the industry say anything but nice things about her. I've only ever known her to be absolutely lovely.

OutLikeThat · 26/07/2024 17:34

The only threads I've read over there are ones about the awful Saccone Jolys and Inghams. Both couples are creepy and abusive parents that deserve everything that is said about them.

Hatty65 · 26/07/2024 17:35

I have no idea what Tattle Life is. I took exception to this bit of your post

to the fake lives we can't help comparing ourselves to.

I've never compared myself to anyone's life - fake or not. I think you'd be happier if you didn't look at social media by the sound of it.

bottomsup12 · 25/07/2024 08:39

Agree it is absolutely unhinged and I'd never bother making an account. The people seem to have infinite time for thinking negatively about people they've never met!

But my point is it's a natural reaction arising from the toxic positivity of lots of social media these days

Absolutely this. Never been on it and don't follow any social media but surely if venom is to be vented it's better to do it in an indirect way since apparently this kind of unpleasantness now seems an inescapable part of society.

1974devon · 26/07/2024 17:53

Imworriedagain · 25/07/2024 08:31

Disagree. I've been on it recently to see what it's like and was absolutely shocked. So much hatred and why?
I was checking out a thread about someone who is a very nice humble YouTuber, not a show off or anything like that. Some people just like to spit their venom and it's sad.

Same..I'd never heard of it but was Googling a well known influencer/instagrammer and was shocked how rude people were about her. I get not everyone likes everyone but seems odd to be so rude about people's appearance etc..

I don’t think it’s unpleasantness, influencers aren’t the innocent doe eyed people they make themselves out to be. Often they’re happy to make money by flogging unethical goods, or by convincing everyone (usually dishonestly) that their life is SO much better than yours because look at my glossy figure/house/job and you too could be like this if you part with your cash. The majority of the time they’re also selling out their kids who get no say in the whole thing - I remember one prominent dad influencer doing a series of posts about his daughter becoming disabled in a way that COMPLETELY violated her privacy.

A few are ok but overwhelmingly it’s a very false and borderline damaging way to make a living, and they don’t give a shit so crying when they get a few nasty comments is 🙄

dibly · 26/07/2024 19:02

its absolute dross, a bunch of vile people spouting opinion as fact. Seeing your name, relationships, appearance, life choices etc slated on a public forum must be horrendous.

Ok so influencers put themselves in the public eye and might not be the most genuine about a lot of their products, but so what? that makes them fair game for an online vicious public mauling? I’ve read a few pages about an influencer that I’m actually quite concerned about, and it’s toxic shit.

VicSynix · 26/07/2024 19:09

I only heard about Tattle because of Mumsnet, so thanks for that, guys! Before I went to Tattle I had no idea about Jack Monroe - thought she was one of the good guys, and her recipes would help people. Then I read a thread where posters actually followed her recipes, and it opened my eyes.

And as someone who's gender critical, I really appreciate that there's still a space on the internet where you can discuss that topic without being instantly shut down.

It’s literally the flip side of their job isn’t it? They’re trying to make people like and approve of them - so it stands to reason many will not like and approve of them. It’s an occupational hazard. Should people assault police officers? Absolutely not. Should they go into the job knowing the likelihood of it happening is quite high? Yes. Of course if anybody is spouting hate speech or being threatening that absolutely needs to be dealt with, but bitchy comments are part and parcel of their job. I don’t have a tattle account & have never commented and would personally never write anything that vile.

The Mumsnet thread on Tattle is having some fun at the number of "viles" on this one.🤣

Last time I heard so many it was on Gimmee Gimmee Gimmee

Rhaenys · 26/07/2024 19:42

I think the level of vitriol on there is unhinged tbh. It’s often justified with “just saying what everyone else is thinking”, but that level of venom isn’t normal IMO. It’s like they’ve not got a good word to say about anyone.

Course they are. Happy to spend their days criticising other people but can't take it themselves. Typical.

What was eye-opening about her recipes? I’ve made a few things and haven’t noticed anything Tattle-worthy about them?

You need to post 3 consecutive posts containing the word 'vile', you'll get a PM once someone sees them.

It''s really not. Unless you can find posts where posters on MN call other women skanks and no one calls them out on it.
