Ask your 16 year old please if he is BU

16 year old DS needs a new (to him it will be a refurbished decent second hand) phone. This apparantly has to be a iphone as a Samsung is, I quote, "social suicide" and that "just about every 16 year old in the UK would agree".

I am deliberately leaving out vital details like who is paying (though it is fair to say neither he nor I are rolling in cash) to get a pure opinion poll on his statement please. Obviously he clearly is being VU but if you have a 16 year can you ask them if they think he is BU please?
Is he being unreasonable?

My 15 year old says that he wouldn't be seen dead with an iPhone as they're shit

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/07/2024 19:22

I see approximately a thousand phones every day (they're all handed in at the start of the day). There are more Samsungs than iPhones.

JackGrealishsCalves · 11/07/2024 19:22

My now 19 year old DS has had Samsung phones for a good few years, he's also not bothered about an iPhone

missmollygreen · 11/07/2024 19:22

In this day and age I cannot believe people still fall for the Iphone hype.
But then I have never liked ti have the same phone as everyone else

Marblessolveeverything · 11/07/2024 19:23

16 year old in Ireland here, only old ones have iPhones, they are so over! ( I do have work iPhone). I would say 90% of his mates have android

NotSureHowToProcess · 11/07/2024 19:24

Both DC (15 and 17) have an iPhone. Both happy.

blibblibs · 11/07/2024 19:25

No help, but 16 yo couldn't care less what phone he has as long as it works. 15 yo must have an iPhone, even though all we would pay for is an iPhone 11!

C0rdeliaChase · 11/07/2024 19:25

DD17 has an iPhone. One of her mates also has an iPhone, the other has a Samsung. Pretty even split in her sixth form with iPhones and Samsungs. DD21 has a Samsung. All down to personal preference.

GoogleWhacked · 11/07/2024 19:26

Not sure how to vote but from 2 teens here only iPhone are acceptable.

Lilacapples · 11/07/2024 19:27

My son is 17 and had a Samsung for years but asked for iPhone last year. He said he just prefers how iPhones work and likes that he can link it to his iPad.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 11/07/2024 19:27

I don't have a 16yr old, so haven't voted, but I would never buy another Samsung. I've had several, some my own and some work phones and they've all been absolute crap.

DinaofCloud9 · 11/07/2024 19:27

I've got a 17 year old with a Samsung. Just asked him and he says plenty of people in his 6th form have Samsungs too.

DracoDormiensNumquamTittilandum · 11/07/2024 19:28

My DS will only have an iPhone to the extent that when he broke yet another of my cast off phones and was offered a free Samsung by DH he chose to buy his own £200 refurbished iPhone instead. I refuse to provide him with any more iPhones as they are too delicate and he's a teenage boy so they just get broken. His choice.

Fernhurst · 11/07/2024 19:29

I've got a 17 year old and 19 year old. They've both got old iphones.

orangesandlemonssaythebellsofstclements · 11/07/2024 19:29

My techy 16yo nephew says that your 16yo is talking rubbish and that people who say they want iphones just want to look cool and better than everyone else but people who know anything know that androids are the superior phone and if you have any self assurance or confidence in yourself you will just buy the better phone instead of conforming to social expectation and getting a crap one to please everyone else.

Oof. Burn.

LadyWhistled0wn · 11/07/2024 19:29

Well my teenager is the same iPhone is the way forward however I see a lot of teens with Samsungs?

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 11/07/2024 19:29

We all have Samsung phones in our house including a uni student.

Balloonhearts · 11/07/2024 19:30

14 year old just made a face and said no IPhones are shit and he's never seen one last more than a few months without cracking the screen. Samsung is better but apparently has to be a Galaxy S series not one of the cheap crappy A or J ones like your nan has. 😂

Anuta77 · 11/07/2024 19:31

My 16 year old (in Canada) used both. He says that he understands your son as apparently many teens think like that and it might even be shamful to be seen with a Samsung, but because I first bought him a Samsung, he finds it better, but iPhones are more attractive.

Moier · 11/07/2024 19:31

Grandsons age 19 ..16..15.. all have iphones..
They laugh at my Samsung and say it's too slow and l can't do half of things on it..

shellyleppard · 11/07/2024 19:32

My 16 year old son is just glad to have a mobile phone.... Motorola if anyone is interested 🤣🤣 he did ask for an iPhone but I said it was beyond the budget and he was happy with that. If he had kept pushing I would have told him something we can afford or nowt 🤗

AzureAnt · 11/07/2024 19:40

He's 16. Tell him to get a job and pay for it himself

Iwantmyoldnameback · 11/07/2024 19:41

I don't know any proper techies with iPhones.

Fernhurst · 11/07/2024 19:43

Mine have got refurbished iphone Xs which are from 2017, so I don't think they are particularly thinking they are cool with them.

HulaChick · 11/07/2024 19:44

Both my children (now 17 & 20) have Samsungs (as do I). My dd had an iPhone (my sister's old one) & I had one (another old one) once & we hated them; not logical to use. None of us want IPhones. I find it very sad that people & status are judged on the type of phone they have. Pathetic really.
