Ask your 16 year old please if he is BU

16 year old DS needs a new (to him it will be a refurbished decent second hand) phone. This apparantly has to be a iphone as a Samsung is, I quote, "social suicide" and that "just about every 16 year old in the UK would agree".

I am deliberately leaving out vital details like who is paying (though it is fair to say neither he nor I are rolling in cash) to get a pure opinion poll on his statement please. Obviously he clearly is being VU but if you have a 16 year can you ask them if they think he is BU please?
Is he being unreasonable?

My 15 year old asked to swap to Samsung "because Iphones are crap and no one wants them"

cloudy477654 · 12/07/2024 10:43

My 13 yo said the same, she asked for an iPhone for her birthday, we got her a good condition refurbished one.
Phones are a big deal for teenagers so I would agree on the iPhone but that it has to be within a budget so may be refurbished or not the latest model!

Whereissummer24 · 12/07/2024 10:49

Both mine have iphones but they are our old ones - they are well aware if they want anything else they have to buy them!!

Projectme · 12/07/2024 10:50

in our house DS22 and DD19 both have iPhones. social suicide to have samsung according to them! DH and I have Samsungs.

S0livagant · 12/07/2024 12:36

What is this 'social suicide' for adults or college aged teens if they have a different phone? It's not something that has come up in my teens social groups at all. What happens if a teen is seen to have a different phone? Are they excluded by their friends?

MorvernBlack · 12/07/2024 12:47

I am late fifties and have an iPhone and do see more older people with them, and my two in IT think Apple products are easier to use for people my age.

Lol I'm mid 50s and I'm better with technology than my kids.
But despite being an Android fan, I did buy my Mum an iPad, because I feel they are easier and it's easier for me to be her distance tech support! The OS always looks the same across devices, whereas my Android phone/tablet are always running some launcher or other. It's the customisation that I love about Android.

I'm a Samsung fan. Having iPods and using iTunes in the 00s put me off ever having an iPhone. But DDs and their mates mostly have iPhones, and DH prefers them. I have a choice at work and always get a Samsung. I did have an iPhone as my work phone for a year but jumped back to Samsung asap.

Edited

Lol, I have a Samsung too, but use the Apple Music streaming app on it, it still has aspects that are as frustrating as iTunes used to be.

Aren’t you a quirky little thing

Ohh look how big and clever you are! Cut me deep

Let me guess, you use an Iphone because it is easy to use? Bless

StripyHorse · 15/07/2024 18:18

Most of DCs (16 and 14) friends have iPhones I think, but DCs both have Samsung and are both happy with that.

How many times did you want to edit that message? Struggling to use your QuIrKY and unique phone properly?

Not sure how to vote but from 2 teens here only iPhone are acceptable.

Then they can pay for them

Blimey are you 13? Who cares what bloody phone one has?

It's called emotional blackmail and needs a firm pushback.

Crystallizedring · 16/07/2024 08:42

My teenagers (16 and 18) have iPhones and are happy with them. Personally I don't mind what phone they have since they are the ones paying for them.

I don’t care - the poster I was replying to clearly does though since she only buys unique phones that no one else has. It was a weird comment for her to make and is just so pick-me 🙄

What do they actually do?

Mine are nerds and are proud of their android phones, not following the wannabes!

focacciamuffin · 16/07/2024 10:44

After 20 years of alternative smartphone use, four years ago I finally bought an iPhone because at the time it was the only way to reliably get wifi calling.

I wish I had done it sooner.

I have a dislike of iAnythings.

Years ago an older work colleague had an iPad mini and wanted me to copy some photos off it. Simple right? Camera roll is accessible if you plug it in via USB? He didn't have the lead with him and Apple having to use different leads to everyone else meant we didn't have a lead that would work in the office.

The iPad would only transfer via Bluetooth to other iDevices. That's ok, I used to have an iPod Touch, I know there are apps that will transfer files via WiFi. What's your Apple password? Can't remember.

Ended up having to transfer them via email, but could only attach five at a time, and even then, iirc, there was an issue with files names that made it more annoying.

If it had been an Android tablet - Him - 'Can you get these photos off here?' Me - 'Sure, have you got the lead?' Him - 'no' Me - 'never mind, we have a lead in the drawer that will work'. Plug in, drag and drop photos, job done.

Nothingeverything · 16/07/2024 12:04

We all have Samsungs in our house. There is no way that I would be paying out for an Iphone. DS always drops/loses phones anyway.

GoldFrame · 16/07/2024 12:16

I think iPhone and Samsung are like PlayStation and Xbox: people generally fall into one camp

IamnotSethRogan · 16/07/2024 12:28

We're and android family and got DS an phone because that's what he wanted. I hate all the iPhone bullshit and never got one but it was a moment where I realised I can't force my views onto him. We got a really reasonable one from giff gaff so other than not liking iPhones myself there wasn't really a reason
