Ask your 16 year old please if he is BU

16 year old DS needs a new (to him it will be a refurbished decent second hand) phone. This apparantly has to be a iphone as a Samsung is, I quote, "social suicide" and that "just about every 16 year old in the UK would agree".

I am deliberately leaving out vital details like who is paying (though it is fair to say neither he nor I are rolling in cash) to get a pure opinion poll on his statement please. Obviously he clearly is being VU but if you have a 16 year can you ask them if they think he is BU please?
Is he being unreasonable?

My 16 year old had to check to see what brand his phone is (Samsung, as it happens). He says that none of his friends are shallow twats, so nobody cares about what brand of anything anyone else has.

lol this is sort of what my son said and he has no idea what makes his friends have , because he doesn’t care!

Differentstarts · 11/07/2024 20:09

All the teens I know have iphones. I have samsung but clearly I'm old and uncool 🤣

RubySloth · 11/07/2024 20:10

Mines a samsung guy... detests Apple.

Heronatemygoldfish · 11/07/2024 20:11

My 16yo says it may have mattered 10y ago but not any more. He thinks you can do more with a Samsung especially with microSD cards for space but in the end it's just personal preference.

My DS is on his third Samsung (all reused from family members).

Sounds like something someone who can’t afford an iPhone would say 😂

You know samsungs are expensive too 😎

Hoardasurass · 11/07/2024 19:20

My 15 year old says that he wouldn't be seen dead with an iPhone as they're shit

Haha, same as mine🤣🤣

Vettrianofan · 11/07/2024 20:12

DS 17 just treated himself to a new phone yesterday. Samsung A15.

willWillSmithsmith · 11/07/2024 20:13

My son (21) has had a Samsung for years and would never go back to an iPhone.

BlueMum16 · 11/07/2024 20:15

17 and 15 here. Iphones are for olds. Google Pixel all the way.

MrsMagoooo · 11/07/2024 20:15

Both my kids have 2nd hand IPhones, when I asked what their mates have, they didn't know and didn't care. It's not a thing round our way I guess.

Katemax82 · 11/07/2024 20:17

My kids have Samsung phones. Iphones suck

RhiWrites · 11/07/2024 20:17

When I was a kid I always had the wrong stuff, it was always uncool. I had the wrong trainers, wrong trousers, the wrong everything.

It didn’t teach me to be independent. It taught me to be embarrassed. As an adult I now have the right trainers and I’m much happier.

Trust your kid to know what’s cool. If you can afford it, get it. Maybe get him to pay money or do chores towards it. But don’t tell him he’s wrong to want it.

jockeywilsonsaid · 11/07/2024 20:18

My 14yo will only have iPhones. He's got an old basic model as there's no way I'm paying for an expensive one for him to lose / smash. His brother has a Samsung that is a better phone for the same price but older DS would not entertain anything other than Apple Hmm

Cherrysoup · 11/07/2024 20:18

Last phone I charged for a member of my form-Year 10-was a Samsung. Ds is bu.

Treelichen · 11/07/2024 20:19

Daughters have iPhones and sons have androids. Samsung are a good phone.

S0livagant · 11/07/2024 20:19

My 18 year old has never had or wanted an iPhone. Onto his second, second hand Google pixel.

Mnetcurious · 11/07/2024 20:20

I have teenagers - them and almost all the kids at their school have iPhones! However only a few have the latest model. Mine have refurbished phones with a cheap sim-only contract. We could have afforded brand new if we’d really wanted, but don’t think it’s sensible.

zeibesaffron · 11/07/2024 20:22

All my kids and their friends have iphones - would not consider a samsung!

None of my teens friends are shallow like that either. Sounds like the type that insist you must have a black backpack of only one allowable brand in year 7, just five years older.

FTPM1980 · 11/07/2024 20:23

No he is not
My 13 and 16 Yr olds would agree
They have refurbished iPhones, cheapest model available and sim only contracts

Backtothedungeon · 11/07/2024 20:24

I am late 40's and have an iphone. 16 year old DS says yours is being ridiculous. He has a Samsung, and does not appear to have become a social pariah.

RappersNeedChapstick · 11/07/2024 20:25

Must be regional. My 16 yo will only have an iPhone.

MoveToParis · 11/07/2024 20:25

My 16 year old you “pretend she had forgotten her phone, forever” rather than have to be seen with a Samsung.

Ponderingwindow · 11/07/2024 20:25

not Sure if we are voting if mom or teen is unreasonable.

iPhones reign supreme though.

Choochoo21 · 11/07/2024 20:27

Most teens I know have iPhones.

What are the price differences?

Cant you get him a second hand/contract iPhone?

You can get refurbished iPhones on pay as you go or contract (you can get some decent contract prices now too).
