Ask your 16 year old please if he is BU

16 year old DS needs a new (to him it will be a refurbished decent second hand) phone. This apparantly has to be a iphone as a Samsung is, I quote, "social suicide" and that "just about every 16 year old in the UK would agree".

I am deliberately leaving out vital details like who is paying (though it is fair to say neither he nor I are rolling in cash) to get a pure opinion poll on his statement please. Obviously he clearly is being VU but if you have a 16 year can you ask them if they think he is BU please?
Is he being unreasonable?

DS is 15 and had an I phone but wants one of those Samsung flip phones 😂. We’re an Apple family though (thanks to DH, I don’t care!) so iPhone it is.

My last Samsung was a flip phone. I’m now on iPhone as the experience was so bad.

The phone broke within weeks and I am very careful, EE wanted nothing to do with it, suggested I go to a Samsung store, 40 miles away as the local one had shut down. They took it away and it came back broke even more! They took no responsibility and it gave up the ghost eventually. I had been a Samsung customer for 15+ years but made the switch.

I work in tech and the majority of our technical teams use iPhones, as do we for company phones.

My 11, 15 and 19 year old all say he isn't being unreasonable.

IamaRevenant · 11/07/2024 20:49

My 16 year old niece has a Samsung (and is very much part of the 'cool kids' at school etc 😆)

Iamblossom · 11/07/2024 20:49

Ds 17 has a Samsung and is incredibly grateful to have a phone at all that he doesn't pay for.

Tell him to check his privilege.

I have a flip phone and the battery life is terrible. I miss my S22!

16 year old has Samsung, 18 only ever had iPhone personal preference

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 11/07/2024 20:52

My 15 year old doesn't even have a phone. This is his choice by the way. Is he the only one?

Blushingm · 11/07/2024 20:52

DD 18 - iPhone
DS 22 - iPhone
Me 45 - iPhone (and a work Samsung)

MyMomLovedViolets · 11/07/2024 20:54

Just asked my 15yo

She said iphones are embarrassing, for people with no personality

😬

Inappropriacy · 11/07/2024 20:56

The market is massive these days. Just choose one that fits your requirements

You don't mind not being able to reach him if he's gone on the bus or train into the nearest city or something?

In this day and age I cannot believe people still fall for the Iphone hype.
But then I have never liked ti have the same phone as everyone else

Aren’t you a quirky little thing

WalkingonWheels · 11/07/2024 21:09

My 16 year old says, "Get a life - iPhones are crap and no one with any self respect uses them any more and it your friends judge you for not having an iPhone, they're not your friends".

He may have grown up in an apple hating household 😂

He has a Pixel 8 Pro and wouldn't have anything else.

NotSerious · 11/07/2024 21:12

I don’t know about ‘social suicide’ but I do know most people are firmly in one camp or another. If he’s used to using an iPhone, a Samsung will be hard to get the hang of, they’re quite different in lots of ways.

GoldFrame · 11/07/2024 21:14

Just get him an iPhone

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 11/07/2024 21:15

We have both IPhones and Samsung in this house. It depends what you use your phone for which is better.

I don’t see any reason to not get him the iPhone

WalkingonWheels · 11/07/2024 21:15

LSTMS30555 · 11/07/2024 19:59

100% IPhone
Simply put better technology/security/durability/build quality.

I hope this is a joke 😂

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/07/2024 21:21

If he REALLY wants to look cool, he should have one of these..

Ask your 16 year old please if he is BU

Your daughter sounds fantastic ☺️

NotSerious · 11/07/2024 21:25

You may as well start a thread about which is the better gaming system out of the X Box, PlayStation or PC.

Each has their own pros and cons, it depends what you primarily use it for and what functions you value the most. If he’s asked for an iPhone then that’s his preference and if you can afford a decent refurb then honestly I’d just get it.

WrittenInTheSand · 11/07/2024 21:26

Mine has an iPhone, as do all her friends. I don't think any of them are particularly bothered but my daughter says iPhones are definitely seen as better at her school.

Chickychoccyegg · 11/07/2024 21:28

My 13, 17, and 18 year old have iPhone and have no Interest in Samsung or any other brand - very much invested in the hype obviously 😂

mamatoTails · 11/07/2024 21:29

My DS went out today to buy himself a new iPhone (not the newest one out) but he's saved up from his 2 jobs, they are still really popular here (we aren't in the U.K.) all his friends have iPhones.

S0livagant · 11/07/2024 21:29

At 16 isn't he working a summer job so he can just save and buy what he wants?

VerityBridge · 11/07/2024 21:29

My 16 year old is quite into technology and has a lot of pretty cool stuff - he has a Samsung because it is a better phone. iPhone is style over substance. It's the brand name cool factor, rather than a brilliantly designed piece of technology.
