Ask your 16 year old please if he is BU

16 year old DS needs a new (to him it will be a refurbished decent second hand) phone. This apparantly has to be a iphone as a Samsung is, I quote, "social suicide" and that "just about every 16 year old in the UK would agree".

I am deliberately leaving out vital details like who is paying (though it is fair to say neither he nor I are rolling in cash) to get a pure opinion poll on his statement please. Obviously he clearly is being VU but if you have a 16 year can you ask them if they think he is BU please?
Is he being unreasonable?

My techy 16yo nephew says that your 16yo is talking rubbish and that people who say they want iphones just want to look cool and better than everyone else but people who know anything know that androids are the superior phone and if you have any self assurance or confidence in yourself you will just buy the better phone instead of conforming to social expectation and getting a crap one to please everyone else.

Oof. Burn.

Sounds like something someone who can’t afford an iPhone would say 😂

Kneeslikethese · 11/07/2024 19:47

My 16 year old (in Manchester) said she doesn't care what people think, she's just bought herself a new (lower end) samsung.

Nat6999 · 11/07/2024 19:47

My ds had Samsung phones up to his last upgrade when he got a Google Pixel 8.

Educationexpert · 11/07/2024 19:49

As an adult, I think Android is social suicide. As someone regularly around teenagers in schools, your son is right.

My 17yo thinks iPhones are rubbish. He has a brand new Google Pixel. His little sister, has been sucked into the iPhone thing and has a refurbed old iPhone. We are hoping she will grow out of it!

Ineffable23 · 11/07/2024 19:50

My techy friends were all on Pixels last time I went on holiday with them. It was actually hilarious everyone had the same phone, so they kept getting mixed up.

Edit: rogue emoji and posted too soon.

Deadringer · 11/07/2024 19:51

My 15 and 20 year old have iphones and wouldn't have anything else. Dh and I have Samsungs.

fiddleleaffig · 11/07/2024 19:53

Mine are only allowed an iPhone if they are paying for it. If I'm paying - it's a £150 Samsung.

Not really. My DS could afford an iPhone but he's into tech so knows Google pixels are way better. We all know youngsters (and maybe older people according to this thread) just want iPhones because they're 'cool' 😂

outdamnedspots · 11/07/2024 19:54

17yo ds has always had a Samsung. His choice. But then, he doesn't care what randoms think.

HarpieDuJour · 11/07/2024 19:54

My 16 year old had to check to see what brand his phone is (Samsung, as it happens). He says that none of his friends are shallow twats, so nobody cares about what brand of anything anyone else has.

crumblingschools · 11/07/2024 19:55

DS slightly older than 16 but still a teen. Used to get our cast off iPhones. When he could buy his own he bought a Samsung and doesn’t want anything Apple related

Yeah, he really can though

weebarra · 11/07/2024 19:56

DS1, 16, hates all things apple and spends quite a lot of time telling me how awful my iPhone is.

BrendaSmall · 11/07/2024 19:57

3 daughters and 3 nieces, 5 used iPhones and 1 uses a Samsung

Youcantellalotofthingsabouttheflowers · 11/07/2024 19:58

My 3 wouldn’t be caught dead with an Android. I couldn’t use one either. Just asked them here and none of their friends use Android. Seems loads do though going by this thread.

LSTMS30555 · 11/07/2024 19:59

100% IPhone
Simply put better technology/security/durability/build quality.

MorvernBlack · 11/07/2024 19:59

My DS has an iPhone, I don't know any teen with an Android phone, although they have a variety of older and newer iPhones.
As an Android fan myself, I'm quite heartened to hear iPhone aren't the goto young person's phone.

FaintlyMacabre · 11/07/2024 19:59

‘Proper techies’ definitely do have iPhones- if my software developer DH with 25 years industry experience is anything to go by!
And incidentally when he spent a day at Google he noticed they all had iPhones…

Nope.

Flaskfan · 11/07/2024 20:04

Ds,14, has a Motorola. He's never really forgiven us, but the reviews for a similar Samsung priced one showed Motorola to be better.i don't know why he's so bothered; it's not like he's anywhere near cool anyway. I've always had Samsung. Love them. Dh is a recent convert.

Tulipvase · 11/07/2024 20:04

I don’t necessarily think iPhones are the best, but I do have one as it syncs with my iPad. But I don’t think Samsung are better, I expect some non descript android is actually better. We’ve had Samsung phones and they just seemed clunky.

TM1979 · 11/07/2024 20:06

15 year old dd here and nothing other than an iPhone is acceptable! Seems to vary a lot then.

time2changeCharlieBrown · 11/07/2024 20:06

Mine not bothered by make as long as it works
