Who is Larry the cat’s family?

Just seen mention of Larry the cat making an appearance for the first cabinet meeting. But… does someone live and sleep there continuously with him? Does he have a family? Is he a lone ranger, does he live independently? What’s the deal?

I don't know. Maybe there's a house keeper there full time or something.

RaspberryIce · 06/07/2024 13:43

I wonder how old he is. Will he have a state funeral one day?

Clearinguptheclutter · 06/07/2024 13:43

I follow Larry on Twitter. I think he’s mainly a Lone Ranger but I get the impression the household staff look out for him and feed him etc

He has held his post since 2011 so pretty old already for a cat

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 06/07/2024 13:44

They said on the news yesterday that he is 16.

JC03745 · 06/07/2024 13:44

DH found an article about Larry today and he is 17 apparently. I too wondered who looked after him. He has apparently seen 7 prime ministers come and go in number 10!

Needmorelego · 06/07/2024 13:44

He has staff like all cats (😂) but his is the staff that work at Downing Street.
He got on well with Dave Cameron apparently and would frequently sit in his lap for purring sessions.
Not sure on his opinions of the more recent PMs.

Hugesunflower · 06/07/2024 13:44

He lives at number 10 and the staff look after him.

ElleneAsanto · 06/07/2024 13:45

Of course there are permanent, live-in staff. You think the PM scrubs his own loos?

OneTC · 06/07/2024 13:46

One of Boris offspring he hasn't been told about yet

I think is very funny when he demands the policemen to open the doors for him.

There's a BBC reporter/photographer who seems very fond of him. He seems a bit of a local celebrity. Larry for PM 😂

SoupDragon · 06/07/2024 13:51

His Twitter account is amusing.

Civil servants look after him. He belongs to no. 10 as Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office.

Namerchangee · 06/07/2024 13:52

I love Larry. My elderly old cat is 18 and there just something about an old mog that is just heart melting. I’m sure he is well looked after.

its2024 · 06/07/2024 13:54

Love Larry and wonder what he thinks about all the fuss, when the cameras are there.

He's probably thinking not other one, he must have been very confused when Liz Truss disappeared so quickly.

Pichee · 06/07/2024 13:55

I know a civil servant who regularly used to go to Number 10. Larry doesn’t have a family. But don’t feel sorry for him he is absolutely adored by staff. I mean if my office had a cat I couldn’t be able to walk past without making a fuss (if cat was okay with it).

Tracker1234 · 06/07/2024 13:55

I saw him sitting at the front door before Starmer turned up. Someone opened the door and he just sat there! I agree with others..he has his staff well trained

CHEESEY13 · 06/07/2024 13:56

I think it's HIS house, whatever the Civil Service think - and the PM (whoever that may currently be) is jolly lucky Larry let's them use the place.

I remember when Donald Trump visited and Larry hid under that huge bomb-proof car. He didn't think much of Trump.

Singleandproud · 06/07/2024 13:56

Larrys official title is Chief Mouser to the Cabinet office.

There are also other government cats Palmerston is/was (not sure if he is still around) the Chief Mouser of the Foreign Office aka @Diplomog

Needmorelego · 06/07/2024 13:56

There's also Gladstone who lives in the Treasury. There was Palmerston who lived in the Foreign Office but him and Larry did not get on so he was sent off to live in the countryside.

You'd think they would have put a cat flap in the door my now!

CHEESEY13 · 06/07/2024 13:58

Aha, Boss Cats!
