Who is Larry the cat’s family?

Just seen mention of Larry the cat making an appearance for the first cabinet meeting. But… does someone live and sleep there continuously with him? Does he have a family? Is he a lone ranger, does he live independently? What’s the deal?

I've been to No10 a couple of times and stroked Larry. He has a bed on the inside window sill, between the front door and the cubbyholes where visitors must leave their phones, where he graciously accepts pets from visiting dignitaries.

He is one of a number of Whitehall cats, who are all properly looked after. The place is riddled with mice - one department I worked in came alive with them after 6pm; in another, I had one run over my foot in a meeting. Cats are essential and also very loved.

Any idea why he didn’t go for an Irish wolfhound?

How tall are they? They might stand taller than him.

Starmer's cat is called JoJo apparently.

@Bleurfghjj I think the only reason he shouldn't actually be PM is he is quite an elderly gentleman now and doesn't need the stress.

Wish someone would tell that to Jill Biden.

Edited

Does it matter what they are called. I have no idea what the last 5 PM's children were called or even if they had any

I seem to have quoted the wrong person.
Mrs May - no DC, Liz Truss - don't know. Mr Sunak - 2 DD? Boris Johnson - several DC, one of them called Wilf (he probably doesn't know himself)

Mr Cameron has DC as does Mr Brown. Both families lost a child, which I wouldn't wish on anyone.

The image of GB and his family leaving Downing Street stayed in my memory. The little boys looked so young. They'd be in their late teens by now I suppose.

Needmorelego · 06/07/2024 16:13

@JimNast this is a cat conversation. Of course we need to know the name of any cats.

Zippedeedooda · 06/07/2024 16:20

Here’s a great pick.
My family always had Irish wolfhounds they are really tall although this one seems massive

Think Jim was talking about Starmers kids

JewelleryCat · 06/07/2024 16:21

I loved that YouTube video someone put up earlier, I didn’t realise having cats at Downing Street was since 1929. Very informative and interesting

JimNast · 06/07/2024 16:21

you want to know my cats' names?

EachandEveryone · 06/07/2024 16:23

I wonder about the traffic as well. Do they keep him in on a night? Does he go wondering inti other buildings like the fancy hotels around there? Do they instinctively know their boundaries? How big is the garden?

Just celebrity cats
Mine are called Bob and Dylan 😄

More evidence (if anyone needed it) for the superiority of cat people over dog people.

You might want to hold that thought - I've just read that he promised to get his kids a dog.

no idea!!! brod and misneach are the stuff of legends, if you google them they literally used to just wander about and he always gives them a pat even when in the middle of something big!!!

Yes, gorgeous cuddly dogs.

Rhayader · 06/07/2024 16:34

I’ve worked in no10 and he’s more or less looked after by civil servants. There are also 2 cats in the cabinet office building which is attached at the back of no10

You'd think they would have put a cat flap in the door my now!

Maybe because someone may put a petrol bomb through it... or a shit in a bag

The council will send someone out if someone gives them a ring

I’ve got a mate who works at the foreign office. Palmerston was very much loved there and the staff looked after him. So much so that he ended up putting on a bit of weight as they’d sneak him treats. During lockdown when most people were working from home, he went to live with a civil servant who took him home. When everyone returned to the office he did too, but he’d got used to the quieter life and was getting stressed out. They tried keeping him on, even gave him his own space that no one else was allowed in if he was in there, but he still wasn’t very happy. So they decided it was best for his wellbeing if he retired. He now lives in a lovely big house (rumoured to be with Sir Simon McDonald and his family) with a lovely big garden and is apparently doing very well.

He’s the rat catcher there. He was a rescue cat that just blends in. The workers there feed him. But, he’s getting old now.🙂

Have just been watching their antics.
Such lovely dogs!
I saw Larry posted on twitter sending his condolences when Brod passed away😔

@JimNast having seen your edit your post makes a bit more sense 🙂

I think we can trust Larry's judgement, he seems the most likeable of the PMs we've had through Larry's tenure.

He could probably still smell that pig’s head.

Wintersgirl · 06/07/2024 16:56

Elliania · 06/07/2024 15:26

It'd probably be too much of a security risk. Plus 10 Downing Street is a Grade 1 listed building so it's most likely too much hassle, especially when there's already staff on hand to let him in/out whenever he wants.

Plus the front door at No10 is probably the original one from the 1700s, it would not be allowed, Larry has many ways and means to come in I'm sure!

Lifeomars · 06/07/2024 17:09

SoupDragon · 06/07/2024 13:51

His Twitter account is amusing.

It's very funny, enjoy reading it and believing it really is a cat tapping away on his phone

Lifeomars · 06/07/2024 17:10

He is a wonderful cat and so confident in that environment, many cats would surely hate all the noise and crowds of press plus camera crews, but dear Larry just strolls around his kingdom
