Who is Larry the cat’s family?

Just seen mention of Larry the cat making an appearance for the first cabinet meeting. But… does someone live and sleep there continuously with him? Does he have a family? Is he a lone ranger, does he live independently? What’s the deal?

There is a reason why the Egyptians worshipped them! This hasn't changed in their minds either. 😂😂 We are enslaved by 2 cats also and know our place. 🥰🥰

As the great PTerry wrote, "In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this."

My cat does this. They just change their minds 😂

I got tired of getting up and down and up and down and up and down…
So I left my slider open a crack for the cats to come and go at their leisure.
And the hunter of the group brought in a live gopher and let it loose — but not before it bit her on the paw.
So I had to catch the gopher and then take the cat to vet to the tune of something like $300 in 1988. And she was a stray I was feeding — who became mine the minute I paid that vet bill.
It was an expensive lesson in laziness.
Gophers have sharp little front teeth 👇

@SoupDragon

Do you read Montaigne?

I have no idea what that is, so no 😂

Michel de Montaigne was a famous sixteenth century French philosopher. There's a quote from him that's very similar to what you said - "When I play with my cat, who knows but that she regards me more as a plaything than I do her?"

SoupDragon · 10/07/2024 10:15

Well, he's not wrong 😂

We had a ginger cat who would sit at the patio doors and meow to go out. Open the door for her, out she’d go, shut door. Then she’d turn round and sit looking in, meowing to come back in. Open door, in she’d come. Shut door. (You can tell where this is going can’t you? 😂) Puss then sits at door meowing to go out. Open door, out she goes, shut door. She turns round, sits looking in meowing. Open door, puss comes in, shut door. Repeat ad infinitum. 😂

We call this the game of nobheads in our house.

Oddly ours is ginger too.

I think Larry's successor should be a ginger, and should be called Eddie in tribute to Mr Sheeran.

Cat's title is 'chief mouser to the Cabinet Office'. Ginger cats are not renowned for their lightning reflexes. More likely to get stuck in the railings.

murasaki · 10/07/2024 14:48

True. Big Lionel's only kill brought in to date was a worm.

Good.

Oh god love him, bet he was proud of that worm too.
But yes, a pet cat that doesn't slaughter wildlife is a good thing obviously.

murasaki · 10/07/2024 15:20

He was indeed. He stood there in front of it until I noticed. And got some dreamies once I'd returned it to the garden.

He'd make a rubbish Chief Mouser to the Canines 0ffice.

KnittedCardi · 10/07/2024 15:20

Yay. Attlee is back 😁

murasaki · 10/07/2024 16:20

Maybe when they voted to keep the speaker in place, they were really voting for Attlee. He is a fine figure of a cat.

SoupDragon · 10/07/2024 16:57

Attlee has official merchandise on the Houses of Parliament website. Larry does not. Surely Larry is the more famous cat!

JewelleryCat · 10/07/2024 17:58

I didn’t even know about Atlee until this thread. Yes, I’d say Larry is more famous

How very dare you! My Ginger Tom brings in a lot of prey he catches. Very agile. He also sits at the front door and when I come down in the morning makes me feel he's been waiting hours. We all know it's seconds if not a few minutes. He has a cat flap anyway round the back...

AInightingale · 10/07/2024 21:31

Oh sorry @BirthdayRainbow. He must be the exception that proves the rule!

BirthdayRainbow · 11/07/2024 17:51

@AInightingale I had to take him to the vet today and not only did she say he was geriatric but that ginger cats are not known for many brain cells 😲. I said how very dare she and told my cat to close his ears!

AInightingale · 11/07/2024 20:35

The poor cat, it's just the way gingers look - sort of Boris Johnson in cat form.

BirthdayRainbow · 11/07/2024 20:57

But he's cute!

This is a genuinely gorgeous thread. Sometimes Mumsnet is glorious. ❤️🐈‍⬛

Callipygion · 11/07/2024 21:39

A house near me has a big hole cut in the bottom of their wooden garden gate. I always assumed it was for hedgehogs, but the other day I saw a very fat ginger cat there who scuttled through when he saw me - (ok, I was going “psst psst psst hello kitty” at the time) and now think it must be for him! He’s so big I bet he can’t jump up any more.

murasaki · 11/07/2024 22:14
