Who is Larry the cat’s family?

Just seen mention of Larry the cat making an appearance for the first cabinet meeting. But… does someone live and sleep there continuously with him? Does he have a family? Is he a lone ranger, does he live independently? What’s the deal?

Of course there are permanent, live-in staff. You think the PM scrubs his own loos?

I don't think customers in hotels scrub the loo after they use them either but its not a 24/7 on call job for say the travelodge toilet scrubber. They likely go home to their own toilet at some point.

Ellmau · 06/07/2024 14:32

Apparently the Starmers already have a cat. Not sure Larry will be too pleased given his past battles with other Official Cats.

The Sunaks' dog learnt to be wary apparently after a few swipes.

More evidence (if anyone needed it) for the superiority of cat people over dog people.

Silviasilvertoes · 06/07/2024 15:46

I wish they’d put Larry on a ballot paper.

The hand-printed wall paper went3 PMs ago

Then Larry deserves one for long service!

Apparently there are two doors for Number 10, identical, but if one needs attention, they swap them over. Neither has a key hole. I think a cat flap ( or two) would be an interesting addition to the Myth and Mystery of the Number 10 door.

i am sure it / they could be done tastefully.

Crankyfeminist · 06/07/2024 15:49

Whoever runs his Twitter account deserves a medal - makes some very apposite and meaningful comments on the state of UK (and world) politics), and also lovely things like this (although it did cause a faint panic that Larry had died!)

I think is very funny when he demands the policemen to open the doors for him.

There's a BBC reporter/photographer who seems very fond of him. He seems a bit of a local celebrity. Larry for PM 😂

Sometimes he is left waiting for the door to be opened far too long.

BirthdayRainbow · 06/07/2024 15:51

its2024 · 06/07/2024 13:57

You'd think they would have put a cat flap in the door my now!

Security risk..

Bobsanidiot · 06/07/2024 15:53

LuckysDadsHat · 06/07/2024 15:34

He has one at the back! But like all cats, they don't want to lower themselves to use a cat flap, when they can get their slaves owners to open the door for them. Mine does it at least 5 or 6 times a day. She has even trained the neighbours kids to knock on our front door to open it for her ffs.

The men next door have been trained to knock if ever they're coming or going and his majesty is on the step wanting to be let in. We used to have a cat who battered the letterbox to come in.

Larryslonglostmother · 06/07/2024 15:53

OK, have name changed for this.

All the buildings around Westminster have resident cats - their main purpose is to catch the rats and mice in the old buildings.

Larry lives in Number 10 and is cared for the staff that work there, who don't change when the government does. He is getting to be older now and spends more time asleep in No 10 than outside. In the next couple of years he will go and spend his retirement with a member of staff who lives in the countryside.

They have a fund that pays for the various cats bills, so vet bills, food, litter etc. This was set up a number of years ago, and people do send donations in for the Westminster cats, and is run by a staffer. They also have internal fund raising to cover the costs of the cats. In his younger years, Larry was always top dog, but less so as he ages. He used to bully the other cats terribly!

Happy to answer, or find answers, to any Larry questions.

Larry's unofficial twitter account is run by one of the press agency photographers based at Downing Street.

There is a lot of waiting around so the photographers take a lot of footage of Larry!

Nope, it's clearly an insider due to some of the tweets. But no one knows who!

You should do your own thread - I know Larry - AMA.

Why the name change? Are you in fact Larry?
All this info is publicly available. It was on the article re the history on no10 cats

JimNast · 06/07/2024 15:58

Doesn't Larry have food and snack preferences?

I know everyone here might be cat people but I feel the need to direct you over to brod and misneach (sadly I think now it’s only brod) over on twitter/ x - in Ireland and is our president’s dog’s account

NashvilleQueen · 06/07/2024 16:03

I often have to remind myself that Larry's Twitter account is run by a human as a joke.

Any idea why he didn’t go for an Irish wolfhound?

Willmafrockfit · 06/07/2024 16:03

the camera must be a very wide angle lens so they can see him on the other side of the door

Larryslonglostmother · 06/07/2024 16:05

The person saying they wouldn't be able to work there due to cat allergy - they do have systems in place for this. There are entirely cat free offices and areas available. You don't even have to go through cat areas.

Like most cats, Larry is very partial to dreamies!

Willmafrockfit · 06/07/2024 16:05

He has staff like all cats (😂) but his is the staff that work at Downing Street.
He got on well with Dave Cameron apparently and would frequently sit in his lap for purring sessions.
Not sure on his opinions of the more recent PMs.

I think we can trust Larry's judgement, he seems the most likeable of the PMs we've had through Larry's tenure.

The roads around Westminster are pretty busy. He is free to roam as he wants. So he has excellent road sense.

no idea!!! brod and misneach are the stuff of legends, if you google them they literally used to just wander about and he always gives them a pat even when in the middle of something big!!!
