Judging by the conversations I overheard about the election today. It was all " stop the boats" and the uk is too attractive a place to live coz benefits 😂"
No wonder Farage is so poular and La Penn is gauning traction in France.

It's pointless telking oeoplat immigrants have a great work ethic generally and that the UK should be an attractive pkace to live and that the UK raped and colonised the world etc.

OP posts:
FuzzyStripes · 03/07/2024 16:49

If Farage was that popular he’d already be PM and be cruising to anither victory.

HowIrresponsible · 03/07/2024 16:51

Just curious do you think anyone should be able to come here illegally and use public funds when we have no money for disabled people, elderly care, children live in poverty and a housing crisis

Do you think we should just pay for anyone who wants to come here and not try to stop that?

madameparis · 03/07/2024 16:52

No most people are not racist. I’m certainly not and I’ve honest never heard any of my family or friends say anything remotely racist.

Yes sadly there are lots of racist people still in 2024. But I refuse to believe that “most” people are.

CelesteCunningham · 03/07/2024 16:54

I don't think most people are racist by any stretch, but yes sadly many are - you see it on here all the time.

“We have money” for all sorts of stuff like freeports and government supply contracts to minister’s best mates. It’s not lack of money (though curent gov have obviously convinced you) - it’s how they choose to prioritise spending it.

RaininSummer · 03/07/2024 16:57

Feeling that the UK has too many immigrants does not always mean somebody is racist.

Glenthebattleostrich · 03/07/2024 16:58

Why do you think it's OK for people to drown? To owe smuggling gangs thousands? To live in camps rather than apply for asylum in a perfectly safe country? Why don't you care about the number arriving illegally who are being trafficked? Because that's why I think they need to stop the boats.

We need immigration but that doesn't mean open doors and dangerous conditions for arrivals. It's not racist to acknowledge there is an issue with integration and that there are issues with the numbers arriving.

socks1107 · 03/07/2024 16:58

I'm not racist, but we are overstretched in all public services. We simply cannot cope with what we have now so whilst I don't agree with Farage, something needs to be done to stem illegal immigration.
Saying that doesn't make people racist

MushMonster · 03/07/2024 16:58

I am a foreigner and I have lived here 20 years. I am scared of the amount of illegal undocumented people arriving and staying.
I have no issue with legal immigration though, to me that is richness, variety and a gain to society.
I do not think UK people are racists, at all. But I do think UK citizens are indeed scared and too guarded of others. A good part of it is based on extrapolating bad experiences and a general feeling of distrust that has engolfed us lately.

menopausalmare · 03/07/2024 16:58

I'm not racist and they must stop the boats. People are dying in the channel. I would also like to think that immigrants of all backgrounds are supportive of our values, want to make a positive contribution to society. are not jumping the queue and we have the capacity to accommodate them.

Shortfatsuit · 03/07/2024 17:00

No. I think Reform voters are unquestionably racist, and some supporters of other parties are too, but overall, I think the majority of people are better than that.

So I would say that it's a sizeable minority of people who are racist, Reform types. And they are generally despised by the decent majority.

CleftChin · 03/07/2024 17:02

No. I think they might be more realistic that people from different places have different cultures and expectations, and how that will mesh with the native cultures in the UK

dreamingofsun · 03/07/2024 17:03

I think the UK goverment (voted in by british public) should be in charge of our immigration policy and who does/doesnt enter. Not people smugglers and residents of other places. I dont think that makes me a racist.

Summerfreezemakesmedrinkwine · 03/07/2024 17:04

Do you have to be white to have concerns and questions about the scale of current immigration figures and the effect on local resources and services and how those pressures are unfairly distributed across our society?

Houseplanter · 03/07/2024 17:06

The reason I want to stop illegal immigrants has absolutely nothing to do with their race.

No one should illegally enter a country with the sole purpose of taking advantage of their public services.

They should be turned around and sent back.

No one in France was shooting at them or bombing them, or the other safe countries they came through. So ask yourself why here.

Anyone who wants to come and contribute to society is welcome. Don't care what race they are

Tricho · 03/07/2024 17:06

So either I think our borders should be a free for all, adding weight to already endurance test level strain to public services.

Or I'm checks notes racist.

Sweet, got it, thanks.

Another incredibly nuanced conversation on politics from MN

Tricho · 03/07/2024 17:13

Ask yourself why the ideas gaining traction are not solely a uk phenomenon. You said yourself it's happening in france, Hungary, Europe en masse

Could we all have just been utterly brainwashed into seeing something that isn't there or maybe, just maybe, there is actually a problem that needs fixing?

Summerfreezemakesmedrinkwine · 03/07/2024 17:15

Yes, over the last few years I've become a bigot because I think that women are a sex class and now I'm a racist because I think we need to have a public discourse on this scale of immigration that concedes that it is more damaging in some areas and to some people than others.

And I have, checks note, an immigrant dh and children with dual nationality.

RubySloth · 03/07/2024 17:16

As did many other countries, rape and colonise the world 🙄

No one cares about legal immigration but lots are pissed off at the many men on boats. If it was just women and proper children, I highly doubt people would be bothered.

Most of "us" come the proper way and bend over backwards.

nfkl · 03/07/2024 17:17

Foreigner myself, the immigration policy is a joke.
Enough with the self-hatred, the post-colonial white guilt, and the systematic shutting down under accusations of racism or xenophobia by the left and the thinking classes.
This is the reason why all socialist parties in Europe (but the UK for now) have lost popular support, because they have shamed, belittled and accused of racism anyone having valid concerns about migration (on top of letting working class jobs go to Asia).
It is not because Britain was a colonial power 100y ago that the UK should welcome all the scroungers of the world.
It is not how you repair the mistakes of history.

Quite. This self-congratulatory type of post where people try and show what a nice person they are really is getting quite tiresome.

1dayatatime · 03/07/2024 17:20

So firstly on racism:

Generally where someone represents competition to you (say a job, a running race or whatever) then most people would find something to dislike about them and if wasn't skin colour then it would be eye colour or accent or which part of the country they come from.

But where you need the help or the support or the co operation of someone such as in a sports team, or a doctor to treat you or to build your extension then most people would ignore skin colour.

SherbetSweeties · 03/07/2024 17:23

thats Not racism. Racism is disliking person based on the colour of their skin and their religion and the country they come from.

wanting stricter border control and wanting to stop illegal ppl coming here in there thousands for all the benefits and health care is not.

I have zero issue with anyone wanting to live here as long as they contribute to society and do it legally.

FestivalVibes · 03/07/2024 17:24

I’m intrigued as to why you think we shouldn’t “stop the boats” - it’s not good for anyone that people are entering the country in that way, and we need a strategy to stop it.

The benefits thing is bollocks, and always has been.

I’m Labour voter through and through but I think legal net migration is too high and the system needs a rethink.

Alongside that, the asylum system is a total shambles, completely broken, and needs overhauling from top to bottom.
