Anyone else wobbling about voting Labour?

1000 replies

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 27/06/2024 17:39

I desperately want to GTTO but the last few years have taught me that ‘any change’ isn’t always good and things can get worse, even if you think they can’t.

I’ve watched all the debates now and Starmer is so… wet. I don’t like him. The first thing he did when women’s rights were mentioned his first thought was men who ‘identify as women’ and how ‘marginalised’ they are. When asked about immigration he squirmed and squirmed before muttering about his role as DPP (who cares? We want to know what you plan to do NOW). When asked about his support for Corbyn he said ‘but I didn’t think we would actually win..’

There’s something about him which is making me very uncomfortable and I just have a bad feeling now about what would happen if he was leader.

Anyone else? If you’re not voting Tory or Labour, who are you voting for and why? I assumed I would vote Labour this time but my gut is suddenly screaming at me not to!

Under the Tories, migration has hit record highs. Small boat crossings so far in 2024 are higher than ever recorded at this point in the year.

Labour on immigration.

Do you think Labour can wipe out trafficking networks?

And that no other EU country has thought to use that as a solution to their major issues

Or US or Aus

@Hummingbird75 you're absolutely right. Anyone who thinks economic migration hasn't impacted the NHS is on glue. Unchecked, economic migration has been going on for decades not years and will
undoubtedly get far far worse under Labour.

She’s not absolutely right at all. The reason the NHS is shagged is because covid led to huge waiting lists and the government has done precisely nothing to address them. If only they hadn’t given all that money to their mates.

As I say, "Under the Tories, migration has hit record highs. Small boat crossings so far in 2024 are higher than ever recorded at this point in the year."

The Tories aren't resolving the situation. They're out of ideas.
Time for change. Why would we keep banging our heads against the same old wall.

You do realise globally it’s going up and as other countries go right traffickers will use easier countries

Why do you think Starner’s ‘smash the gangs’ is at all feasible?

Blair is remembered for Iraq. Brown for selling off the gold. Cameron for Brexit, May for Gender Reform, Truss for crashing the economy, Sunak for bottling it.

None of these people have conspicuously covered themselves in glory. Politics is bloody depressing. Maybe I expect too much from it.

You forgot Boris for the slow response to Covid causing hundreds of deaths , oh and doing a complete switcheroo on Brexit to further his career ,cheating on all his wives and almost being bankrupt himself never mind the country and don’t forget parties! I do realise it’s a lot to remember and a long list for that idiot.

I think Sunak may be remembered for not affording sky but attending Winchester at almost 50k a year! that’s some Sky package! Oh and not having ANY working class friends.

Auburngal · 28/06/2024 16:48

Can't stand SKS.

The seat where I live has been under Tories since 1950.

The current MP has done a great job for the area and he didn't participate in any of the lockdown gatherings at No10.

Can see him keeping his seat with a few hundred majority. Instead of the mid teen thousands.

awaynboilyurheid · 28/06/2024 16:51

Oops and almost forgot Boris couldn’t say how many children he had as he didn’t acknowledge the daughter he had as a result of an affair
Yes the Tories eh ! The great defenders of woman

Why do you think that more right leaning countries will have better solutions that make them less attractive?
The Tories track record proves beyond all doubt that this is not the case.

Change has to be worth a try - or we'll definitely see not only a continuation of the current increasing trend but the squandering of billions of tax payers money on half arsed projects like Rwanda.

Don't suppose you mean Liam Fox in North Somerset by any chance?

Conservative in this constituency since 1950.

Trafficking is uncontrolled

Which is happening now - and is not Labour's plan.

Aus is hardline and is one of the more successful countries on border control

Easier as a country and you’ll be targeted by traffickers. Clearly as it’s just a sales job to them. Put deterrents in place and people will shift. Here it was to Ireland but that flow will stop.

Change to something that no other country is pursuing is madness and will be expensive anyway. Tracking down trafficking networks and dealing with them if you actually get one, plus increased numbers and processing, is not cheap.

When numbers go up what will Starmer do?

Yes their plan is to ‘smash the gangs’

Why is the EU, US and Aus not using this with billions available?

Churchview · 28/06/2024 17:04

Well we'll see won't we @EasternStandard .
Keir Starmer has a long, successful career of making change happen.
Nobody else sensible is offering anything.

I did completely forget Boris! I just remember him as an utter clown.

Sunak I have an image of him standing in the rain looking desperate. I feel a bit sorry for Sunak.

Not sure being the most cautious works to deter traffickers

They will appreciate the profits more than anything else.

Especially when other routes get harder

Churchview · 28/06/2024 17:12

Caution, motivation, application and determination, intelligence - all traits Starmer has shown through his career - can and have achieved more than divisive messaging and half-cocked populist schemes.

ArabellaScott · 28/06/2024 17:12

Spinet · 28/06/2024 16:26

This uncontrolled immigration lie has to stop. It is just made up. The Tories have spent loads of money on a scheme that has done fuck all to curb immigration or stop the boats or whatever dog whistle it is. Reform are racist fuckers. Labour plan to bring in points-based immigration so that we can actually have a work-force again, and target organised crime groups rather than vulnerable people making what they see as a life-saving journey. Will it work? I don't know. But at least it is not hate-spew from people who want to appeal to our basest and most inhumane instincts.

The NHS is not on its knees because of immigration, it's fucked because the right want it that way. It suits their narratives and no doubt their bank balances.

Or also, it's fucked because we have a rapidly ageing, increasingly sedentary and unhealthily obese population, it's riddled with impossible, insanely complicated bureacracy, and needs a massive overhaul.

I love the NHS, I really do. It can be the absolute best of the best, but unfortunately it can also fail horribly. I think we need to look very clearly at how it works and if it is going to continue to work given how many longterm health conditions it now has to treat. I don't know if the problem is even money so much as management - it's such an enormous beast, where does one even start?

I don't want a wrecking ball taken to it, I don't want it driven by profit and private healthcare that puts profit above everything, but current model is clearly in a very dangerous and precarious position right now. It seems better up here in Scotland, for the most part, but still needs assessing in terms of longterm viability of free scripts etc. Free dental care sounds brilliant, but not if that means that in practise you just can't get any care.

The conservative scheme hasn't even started yet, it will start in July. It has taken this long to battle through the courts as you know.

Migrants here to make a fast buck and part of gangs are in no way 'vulnerable'

The NHS has had record breaking investment. Literally billions. It can not keep up with demand, it was never designed to serve every health need of 70 million people. Plus however more that live here illegally.

Yes, so long as that caution doesn't tip into paralysis and an inability to actually make any decisions.

mummymeister · 28/06/2024 17:14

I want the tory in my area out. they are completely and utterly useless. I like the other Labour, Lib dem and green candidates. But, the whole issue around womens rights scares the pants off me tbh. I had an incident at my local pool of a person with a penis who identified as a woman using the changing rooms and showers. This is one big open changing room, nothing with doors on. I challenged them and the pool operator who basically was shit scared of some sort of trans activism retaliation and told me if I didnt like it, I shouldnt use the changing room or use the disabled booth. This is what you will get if you vote Labour. There will be no such thing as safe women spaces. Men who self identify as women and who still have peniss will be able to use our spaces. I have no problem with trans people with no penis, but I do draw the line at this Labour notion. I have never been a single issue voter in my life and certainly never saw myself not voting Labour. But I just cannot.

Dental care hasn’t been free for adults in my adult life and I’m over 70. Nobody expects that but access to an NHS dentist surely isn’t too much to ask.

This.
And deterred EU workers who were doing wonders within the NHS.
