Anyone else wobbling about voting Labour?

1000 replies

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 27/06/2024 17:39

I desperately want to GTTO but the last few years have taught me that ‘any change’ isn’t always good and things can get worse, even if you think they can’t.

I’ve watched all the debates now and Starmer is so… wet. I don’t like him. The first thing he did when women’s rights were mentioned his first thought was men who ‘identify as women’ and how ‘marginalised’ they are. When asked about immigration he squirmed and squirmed before muttering about his role as DPP (who cares? We want to know what you plan to do NOW). When asked about his support for Corbyn he said ‘but I didn’t think we would actually win..’

There’s something about him which is making me very uncomfortable and I just have a bad feeling now about what would happen if he was leader.

Anyone else? If you’re not voting Tory or Labour, who are you voting for and why? I assumed I would vote Labour this time but my gut is suddenly screaming at me not to!

2006?! Labour left office in 2010 when the population was 62.8 million

OK so the population has gone up by 5 million instead of 7 million since the last Labour government That doesn't change the population increase from 2006 to 2023. And within that figure, a lot of EU net financial contributors left after Brexit.

So Labour was in power during the 2008 crash? Doesn't that just demonstrate the fact that so much is out of the Government's control? Or are you saying that that was the Labour government's fault?

Eh? Why are you trying to put words in my mouth? I was just correcting your rather surprising error.

ArabellaScott · 28/06/2024 11:36

Agree with all of that, but note Scotgov handled covid just as badly, but painted a different face on it.

I'm intrigued by the suggestion on this thread that pessimism correlates with leaning right, and optimism with leaning left. Both approaches have drawbacks, of course.

Scotgov had their flaws, but the biggest scandals/failures were at the UK national government level - PPE procurement, Track and Trace, Nightingales, etc. Poor communication, coordination, and cooperation between Westminster and the devolved administrations had input from both sides, and all administrations were 'leaky'.

I'm not putting words in your mouth at all. I'm demonstrating that a lot of stuff is outside the control of the government whatever colour they are. Hmm Why is it surprising, I had a baby and toddler 2006 - 2010, probably too sleep deprived to give a shit about who was in power.

Christ alive, can we not have a decent discussion on here any more without someone fucking taking offence.

Not naive, just not ground down. British governments have done amazing things in very hard times. Not this Tory government though, they wrecked the country with their greed for power and money.

Time to put them in the bin.

No government has had to deal with such a huge population with such huge complex issues.

We face many challenges, that is true but we can deal with them. We have to. The first step is ridding ourselves of this disastrous government who have done so much damage to the UK domestically and internationally.

Gosh you are tetchy! I did not take offence, was just a bit puzzled by your response to me pointing out your error.

Gogogo12345 · 28/06/2024 13:29

I wouldn't vote for our labour candidate. He did a big speech about what he was going to do for X town but didn't mention any of us in Y town . Both towns come under the constituenty

Fair enough. 🙄

I just wanted to say to anyone who is wavering, or deterred from voting Labour by single issues, please would you look at this photograph taken from the local newspaper of one of my local hospitals. It is a terminally ill lady lying on the floor as there wasn’t even a trolley for her. If you vote on a single issue please let it be to save the NHS, Labour are not perfect but they will at least try to mend the NHS. This lady could be any of us or one of our loved ones.

Anyone else wobbling about voting Labour?
RampantIvy · 28/06/2024 14:36

That's shocking @Evenstar

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/06/2024 14:41

That's Britain in 2024, brought to you by the Tory Party.

Give me a “wooden” prime minister who gets on with it any day over a slick, smooth salesman who sells miracles like Blair or Johnson.

kerstina · 28/06/2024 14:58

I am voting Labour . I do not want more of the same and things will get better. If we get another bloody Tory government we are totally fucked.

Churchview · 28/06/2024 15:28

@Evenstar That poor lady, her poor family and the poor staff who have to care for her in those conditions.

God knows where we'll be if we have another five years of this Tory government.
Surely, this one picture make you think that change has to come.

TheNoonBell · 28/06/2024 15:47

I don't know how anyone could vote for a party that has been found to be racist by the Equality and Human Rights Commision under 4 years ago.

Last time they were in power they invaded multiple countries killing hundreds of thousands of innocents. This was despite millions of us protesting against the possibility of the war. Twenty years on those leaders with blood on their hands have never been bought to account for their wars of aggression and still have power over Labour.

I would think long and hard about that when considering who to vote for.

😥
Completely agree with all your post too

Danceswithweasels · 28/06/2024 16:06

I was not wobbling, I voted last week, by post. This is the first time in my memory there has been a Labour candidate to vote for. 6 hours after posting he was suspended for betting on himself losing, I now effectively have no vote as ballot papers will not be reissued and chance are we will have a Conservative MP once more 😫

The guy you voted for is still on the ballot. They don't remove candidates from the ballot who have been suspended or even thrown out of their party.

That poor lady, what a horrific situation. I am sorry to say but this is not going to change under Labour. It really isn't.
Things are only going to get worse if anything

Why?

Because we do not have the infrastructure to support the number of people living here already - we don't have the hospital beds, we don't have the GPs or the dentists nor the housing! Everything is stretched well beyond capacity already, and this is where it leaves us. Our elderly dying on the floor. It is completely and utterly unacceptable and heartbreaking to me.

What do you think is going to happen when we have uncontrolled immigration under Labour? They have no plan at all, absolutely tumbleweed.
More ladies like this, dying on the floor.

There are thousands of economic migrants in France right now waiting for a Labour government because they see them as a soft touch with no plan to stop them, and imagine they will have a far better chance with a weak government, and that is the truth.

If you want everyone to have a hospital bed, good NHS care and a house to live in then you need to support a political party that will put a stop to illegal immigration and people trafficking. Without this we are totally and utterly screwed.

We need to get a grip.
We need to take control of immigration once and for all, and for heavens sake this is a reason not to vote for Labour surely if ever there was one.

Spinet · 28/06/2024 16:26

This uncontrolled immigration lie has to stop. It is just made up. The Tories have spent loads of money on a scheme that has done fuck all to curb immigration or stop the boats or whatever dog whistle it is. Reform are racist fuckers. Labour plan to bring in points-based immigration so that we can actually have a work-force again, and target organised crime groups rather than vulnerable people making what they see as a life-saving journey. Will it work? I don't know. But at least it is not hate-spew from people who want to appeal to our basest and most inhumane instincts.

The NHS is not on its knees because of immigration, it's fucked because the right want it that way. It suits their narratives and no doubt their bank balances.

It’ll be problematic for Starmer if it doesn’t - which is unlikely otherwise other EU countries would do it with the billions they spend on the issue

If France go right we’ll be in even worse shape on this

That poor woman and the thousands like her are not in that position because of illegal immigration. The NHS and country is in dire straits because of this Tory Government.

Not people who arrived here 5 minutes ago and certainly not people who've never set foot in the country.

To use the mumsnet cliche, are you on glue @Hummingbird75?

Under the Tories, migration has hit record highs. Small boat crossings so far in 2024 are higher than ever recorded at this point in the year.

Labour on immigration.

@Hummingbird75 you're absolutely right. Anyone who thinks economic migration hasn't impacted the NHS is on glue. Unchecked, economic migration has been going on for decades not years and will
undoubtedly get far far worse under Labour.
