Anyone else wobbling about voting Labour?

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 27/06/2024 17:39

I desperately want to GTTO but the last few years have taught me that ‘any change’ isn’t always good and things can get worse, even if you think they can’t.

I’ve watched all the debates now and Starmer is so… wet. I don’t like him. The first thing he did when women’s rights were mentioned his first thought was men who ‘identify as women’ and how ‘marginalised’ they are. When asked about immigration he squirmed and squirmed before muttering about his role as DPP (who cares? We want to know what you plan to do NOW). When asked about his support for Corbyn he said ‘but I didn’t think we would actually win..’

There’s something about him which is making me very uncomfortable and I just have a bad feeling now about what would happen if he was leader.

Anyone else? If you’re not voting Tory or Labour, who are you voting for and why? I assumed I would vote Labour this time but my gut is suddenly screaming at me not to!

Labour aren't going to save the cost of Iiving crisis and wealth inequality. At best they can prolong how long it takes for us all to reach poverty. However they are more favourable to Tories.

I'm in a marginal constituency. I'd rather vote Green but it may be a tactical vote for Lib Dem.

So boil the frog rather than just kill it 😂 I joke kinda…

MoobzLikeJabba · 27/06/2024 18:04

I’m not a fan of Kier Starmer and the whole Angela Rayner council house stamp duty fiasco has put me off labour even more. Oh and the multiple amounts of addressed propaganda I’m getting from labour each week is a turn off (at least two pieces addressed to me each week for the last few weeks, along with stuff addressed to the whole household) - seems such a waste of money/paper.

I remember what it was like last time we were under a labour government and it feels like a lot of the country’s problems are partially from the fallout from that period.

I’m going to be voting based on the local candidate. I’d never really heard of the labour one or seen anything she’s done in the community, just pops up at election time. One of the other candidates is a former Tory councillor and he was as useful as a chocolate teapot when he was a councillor, so that strikes him off straight away.

Our current MP does seem to get involved with the community and takes time to talk with their constituents, that’s why he’ll get my vote - sometimes it’s better the devil you know.

Livinginaclock · 27/06/2024 18:05

I'm not, because I don't trust them on women's rights, and I've been a Labour voter all my life.

That said, the one time I have had an issue that I needed to contact our MP about (Tory) he was kind and helpful.

I have a friend who lives in K Badenoch’s constituency, this person contacted her about a local person who needed help and she (or her team at least) was very helpful. However one look at her parliamentary voting record tells you everything you need to know. Being helpful to a few individuals in your constituency doesn’t make up for supporting awful policies which negatively affect so many more.

paasll · 27/06/2024 18:06

I think con and lab are both poor options. My dh and ds are voting Lib Dem.

Hankunamatata · 27/06/2024 18:07

I'm worried about will make a bigger mess by trying to reverse lots of decisions that have been made by government

HandsDown84 · 27/06/2024 18:07

I've already voted. Our MP has been in post for about 25 years and has no idea - he lives in a mansion with a gaggle of privately educated kids and all he talks about is saying "no" to an incinerator in one of the local towns. He normally has a majority of about 25k so he's in for a shock.

I have a friend working in the NHS who says that the whims of successive ministers seriously bugger things up.

Spinet · 27/06/2024 18:08

I remember what it was like the last time Labour were in government too. There were mistakes undoubtedly, but there were also functioning schools, playgrounds, health service, water supply, and youth service. There were not foodbanks or illegal policies about asylum seekers. I was able to access mental health provision and the schools weren't full of suicidal children. I don't think a lot of our problems stem from them.

Mummyratbag · 27/06/2024 18:14

Austerity
Brexit
Partygate/PPE
Johnson
Truss
Cost of Living Crisis
NHS waiting lists

I could go on... 14 years of self serving dicks.. they need to step the fuck aside now. No wobbling here, another 5 years of this? Just no.

FeelingHotHotHotFeelingHotHotHot · 27/06/2024 18:15

Yeah I am struggling too @MaryMaryVeryContrary

I want to vote LibDems but am scared if some people vote for them and some vote for Labour, it will split the vote, and Tories will win IYSWIM. So I think I should vote Labour. But I don't like Starmer much, OR some of their policies, like their stance on women.

Struggling terribly here.

BoobyDazzler · 27/06/2024 18:16

It’s tricky isn’t it. I don’t want to vote labour because of their views of women and yes, as you alluded to in your op, their fucked up stance on what makes one, but I can’t in good conscience vote Tory again - this country is absolutely fucked and they’ve made an utter pigs ear of their time in parliament.

NotThatWitty · 27/06/2024 18:16

I was planning to vote Labour. Until, I discovered that our Labour candidate doesn't even live in our constituency, or have any ties here. That annoyed, and disappointed, me a lot.

Our local LibDem candidate is decent - lives in the area and is a local SEN teacher; he therefore feels passionate about our local area, and educational policies in general (I'm sure there are other policies that are also important to him, I hope).

Sadly, we are historically a 'blue' area, but for the first time in a long time, we had the chance of voting for a Labour candidate (judging by local social media groups etc), however, people who were planning to tactically for Labour (they are fed up of the Tory candidate), are now angry and upset that the Labour candidate has no ties to the area.

Some of the comments I have been reading on FB have been along the lines of, "Am fed up of Tories, so was torn between Labour and Reform. Now going for Reform." I've seen a worryingly amount of similar posts to this.

My DH has made me promise that if we end up with a Reform MP, we will put our house up for sale and move.

FloofyBird · 27/06/2024 18:16

I was going to tactically vote Labour, but as that person is now administratively suspended I just can't vote for them. I do wonder what others will do locally and whether it means we will remain in a Tory seat.

ClematisWren · 27/06/2024 18:18

I’ve voted labour (postal vote) despite being gender-critical and having a child in private school. I’m a GP who has worked under both labour and Tory governments, and, after the decline of the past 14 years, the only way the NHS is likely to survive the next decade is with labour in power.

Bucket07 · 27/06/2024 18:19

I'm a lifelong labour voter and for the first time won't be voting for them as they've deselected their amazing candidate. Absolutely gutted as she was a dead cert to win. Now she's running as independent but the vote will be split so our odious Tory MP might well survive. Labour have made a right pigs ear of this one.

ClematisWren · 27/06/2024 18:20

Also, it looks as though Lib Dems and Greens are both even less aware of what a woman is than Labour, so no point voting for them on those grounds.

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/06/2024 18:20

I desperately want to GTTO but the last few years have taught me that ‘any change’ isn’t always good and things can get worse, even if you think they can’t.

If the last few years have taught me anything its that the Tory party is an anti-woman, anti-UK party that cant be trusted with running a bath, nevermind a country.Angry

If you want more chaos, corruption, waste, incompetence and lies then vote for them. Me? I'd rather vote for my neighbour's dog than re-elect this bunch of fuckwits.

Doesn't mean you have to vote for Labour though. Other options are available.

feellikeanalien · 27/06/2024 18:21

We also have the SDP standing in our area but the only person who seems to have a chance of unseating the Tory MP is the Labour candidate.

When I look back to 1997 and how exciting it all was I find it quite depressing. I will probably vote Labour as I have a disabled DD but I am also very worried about their stance on women's rights.

iamtheblcksheep · 27/06/2024 18:21

I was in Norfolk this week. I live in a super safe conservative seat so it was interesting to go to a place where a seat is supposedly on the line.

Lots of signs were up. Mainly Lib Dem and conservative plus one labour sign chucked in a bush.

It’s not as clear cut as they think it’s going to be. Everybody voting labour because they hate the tories need to take a long hard look at what they are voting for because I’ll be sat here laughing my head off when it all goes wrong.

Everything you say in your OP about Starmer is true and then some.

IreneGoodnight · 27/06/2024 18:21

I'm a Labour party subscriber although these days it's mainly out of gratitude for the NHS and the welfare state. (Nye Bevan is a huge hero of mine). I've always voted Labour wherever I've lived, in different parts of the country.
I now live in one of THE safest Tory seats. The local MP has been in situ for years, was anti Brexit and tbf seems well invested in this area. I've no personal beef with them but I do want to see their party out of power.
The Labour candidate has been parachuted in from HQ, has no connection with this area and to their credit is not even pretending to have. Their leaflet received only yesterday is very brief, very general and totally uninspiring.
The LP election pack I've received suggests I help out the LP campaign in a neighbouring constituency - that's how interested the LP is in winning in mine!
It's highly likely that our former MP will retain their seat albeit with a smaller majority. The Lib Dems have the best chance of a shock result so I think I'll have to vote tactically for their candidate who is local to our county, even though I'm not in tune with some of their major policies.
But my heart might take over when I'm in the booth on July 4th.
Decisions.....

PrinnyPree · 27/06/2024 18:23

I'm a Green but Labour might actually take our very safe Tory seat, their MP candidate here actually seems like he actually gives a shit about people and the environment. So may have to hold my nose.

I can't stand Starmer by the way I think he's a duplicitous robot who is mildly better than the Tory alternative. I worry about him being a bit of a neo lib corporate shill too, who will continue with the stealth privatisation of the NHS and keep kicking the can down the road regarding the environment. I also don't like the treatment of female BAME candidates and members by the party. It's a hard pill to swallow to HAVE to vote for them out of the threat of more Tory rule.

You have a disabled daughter who you are clearly worried about but are voting labour?

They will not protect your daughter.

Meadowfinch · 27/06/2024 18:24

I'm hoping there will be an independent candidate because otherwise I have a choice between people who want to deny my status as a woman, or a Tory.

Talk about Hobson's Choice !
