to wonder if a high ponytail sends a message I'm unaware of?

I was watching a friend's kid after school and told her about a summer camp where I used to work. We often helped the kids put their hair in 'camper buns'—a messy bun right on top of their heads. She asked me to do it for her, but didn't like it, so we ended up with a super high ponytail instead. She loved it and had fun swishing it around.

When her mum saw it, she commented on how high it was and then lowered it.
I didn't really think too much of it, until today on TV a character wore a high ponytail, and other characters remarked on how high it was, saying things like 'erm, are you sure you want to wear your hair like that?'.

Am I missing something about the significance of high ponytails? I can be bad at this stuff, subtle cues and such, I'm wondering if I've caused offence to my friend somehow. She seemed really weird about it. Don't want to make the same mistake again if I've misunderstood the significance of something.

It has always been a very popular style with girls from the rougher end of town.
Alongside fake eyelashes and fake tan.
I would never mess with a girl with a high ponytail.

You mean the Kate Moss facelift effect?!

mondaytosunday · 21/06/2024 13:14

I thought it was popular because of Ariana Grande? The bun on top of the head I don't like at all and am surprised that Virgin Atlantic has adopted it for their flight attendants.

It's shit like this that make me HATE other people

I’d wear and put my child in a high ponytail just to spite them. 🤣

Is that just because of the Peru two though?!

Marblessolveeverything · 21/06/2024 13:15

I occasionally put my hair in a very high ponytail because it covers a multitude of sins and stops it catching the back of a chair etc,- I've very long hair. I am 47 and at this stage have the sense to wear my hair any way I fancy, and feck the begrudgers. As my late mother used to say - jealousy must be an awful burden to carry.

Ignore the people who think a "hair style" tells anything about a person. Their ignorance tells you more about them.

Im from Essex and we call it the northern facelift 🤣🤣
got to love a stereotype!

I'm also from Essex and we always called it a Croydon face-lift in school 😆

I think it depends on just how tight and hair sprayed the head is - gelled to the head is not a good look and seems to be in trend again as it was with the bits down the front when I was younger.

Just up with wispy bits and a bit 'fluffier'on top looks more wholesome and sporty/practical.

LER83 · 21/06/2024 13:05

Vicky pollard and Croydon face-lift was years ago though, surely young kids today have no idea about these things, and just wear it high because they like it, especially primary age! I like a high bun because I have very thick hair, and a scuffy high bun makes my face look slimmer 😂

Me too!!

I also like to think it looks a bit "bohemian", whereas I'd otherwise just be "dishevelled" 😂. Could be wishful thinking though....

I'm watching this thread with interest while my 6 year old is at school currently sporting the high pony tail.
I started doing it this weather so she could wear her hat. It stays on better with a pony tail threaded through.

If the pony tail is low enough to thread through the back of a cap, it's not ''High''.

High ponytails are almost on top of the head so that they can be swished about in a ''Provocative'' way.

Patti Simcox died recently. RIP

Oh no how sad she played that part perfectly.

garlictwist · 21/06/2024 13:23

Ooh I've always been envious of high pony tails. I have very weighty hair and it just doesn't stay up for me. I'd love to feel it swishing away behind me.

Choochoo21 · 21/06/2024 13:23

I bloody love a high pony tail!

I’m actually going to wear it like it tomorrow and on Monday for work.

Palagiprincess · 21/06/2024 13:18

Slightly off topic but these are perfect for extra swish and so simple to use (note: not on commission just someone with very long hair):

This reminds me of a very stubby man's circumcised penis!

It's not a pretty thing!

When I was at school back in the 90s none of us had high ponytails because it was only the "sharons and tracys" who had them. And none of us wanted to be called a sharon.

😂We had Sharons and Traceys at school as well. And Kevins.

Are you from the Midlands?

I'm genuinely sad that "Kev" and "Shaz" got overtaken by the term "Chav" as ways of categorising humans.

Palagiprincess · 21/06/2024 13:25

@oakleaffy 😂Oh dear - I can't unsee that now.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 21/06/2024 13:26

I actually live fairly near and not far from Croydon and grew up sort of near there. Yes of course it was a thing and maybe still is a thing. Not that I ever go there much. Bromley is my preferred shopping town. I can’t recall having a Croydon facelift myself but would not rule it out. My hair has been known to break if I have it in ponytails too much (only because I highlight it and it’s fine).

If people have nothing better to do than stereotype people, and make nasty snobbish comments then I despair though.

Whippetlovely · 21/06/2024 13:26

This is amusing. There are certain buns that look nice and smart, others that look chavvy. I suppose the same with pony tails. Although I always envied girls that could get their hair up so high and smooth. I am crap with hair. Those big bows are also very chav. I don’t know why people put thier bald babies with those giant bows on it looks so naff.

XiCi · 21/06/2024 13:27

I just think of Ariana when I think of a high pony. It's much more flattering than a low ponytail.

I think some people just like to have full control over their child's hair and clothes and don't like it when other people step in and change things I honestly wouldn't give it a second thought OP

AstonMartha · 21/06/2024 13:27

@mondaytosunday Arianna wishes she was Kate Moss!

Limth · 21/06/2024 13:29

Ariana Grande always looks like she's working really hard to hold in a fart. The high pony doesn't help with this.

MILTOBE · 21/06/2024 12:26

It's the Essex facelift thing isn't it, where women were ridiculed (as bloody usual) for how they wanted to look.

exactly! It's yet another thing to keep women questioning themselves and overly conscious of their appearance.

Palagiprincess · 21/06/2024 13:25

@oakleaffy 😂Oh dear - I can't unsee that now.

Sorry! 😂
It's probably not worn on the head though....? I'm not sure how it would work.

Now I'm older, I lopped off my 'crowning glory' to shoulder length.. I loved having really long hair when younger..It takes a lot of looking after...Mum used to have beautifully long hair but she too now sports a neat 'Bob'

Love your long hair while you can!

@Sgtmajormummy

This isn’t a high ponytail. The high one is on top of the head, not at the crown.
