Woman telling me to open my car windows

The other day I went to the petrol station with my 6 year old in the car. She’s currently off school as isn’t feeling well and we stopped to get petrol before heading to the Drs.
It’s our local petrol station, a small one. I always park at the pump closest to the large front window where the cashier is, it’s about the same distance as sitting on the sofa and watching tv.
Dd didn’t want to go in as she doesn’t feel well, it was a warm day but because Dd wasn’t feeling well she didn’t want the air con on or windows open. I parked outside and nipped in, being able to see her the whole time. I was behind one man in the queue paying and a woman came in and started asking if it was my child in the car and saying how the car windows should be open. I said to her, it literally takes me less than a minute to come in here and pay. She was still going on about it, at this point I started to feel pissed off and said ‘It’s ok, it’s my daughter, I know what I’m doing, she’s not very well and didn’t want the windows open and I’m just nipping in and out and can see her the whole time, ok?’

Was I in the wrong or was she?

She was concerned about your DD being over heated in the car.

You answered her by saying your DD wanted them closed as she felt sick.

The end.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 19/06/2024 14:54

Your child wasn't feeling well and certainly wouldn't feel any better breathing in the fumes from the forecourt - and you were only a few minutes.

YANBU

Ryeman · 19/06/2024 14:55

I didn’t think you were allowed to open the windows while pumping fuel/parked at a pump? Ignore her, she’s an idiot.

This. It isn't even worth thinking about any more.

The busybody…ness of it really annoyed me..as if I don’t know what I’m doing with my own child, I keep her safe. Who even says that without a really good reason. I could see it if I saw a child in a locked car for ages with the windows open in the heat, but it was obvious I was just nipping in and was looking out of the window the whole time whilst I was in the queue as I always do

If she had watched and you'd been gone for 5 mins or more then I would understand it. But I used to do the same when mine were young - always the pump nearest the door and can be seen through the windows (small town so able to choose pumps if you go at the right time). If you were literally in for 2-3 mins max then you were right!

AtomicBlondeRose · 19/06/2024 15:01

FGS the child was sitting in a car for two minutes, not trapped in an abandoned fridge. Some people need to wind their bloody necks in. Pretty obvious it’s for a short time if you were parked at a pump.

SleepyRich · 19/06/2024 15:02

Yep it was silly of her to comment, stations are covered & not in direct sunlight, it's not hot, in that situation you're clearly only going to be out the car for a few mins. She's clearly over anxious.

Besides, I suspect if you'd dragged her into the shop this has a (slightly) higher risk of injury then being seatbelted inside the parked car.

It just felt like one of those people who had to say something, just so annoying

A car's internal temperature can rise 20 Fahrenheit in 10 minutes. It really is very quick. Busybodies or concerned people? You can see it either way.

@nopestillnotmanagedto It is, that’s how close I parked and how quickly it took me to hand over a note

24 degrees is warm, I don't think she's unreasonable to have mentioned it.

Assuming your DD is not a dog, she'll be fine in a car without a window open, in the uk, under the shade of a forecourt canopy.

Some people just enjoy sticking their noses in.

Wendy83 · 19/06/2024 15:11

I would have replied with 'she's not a dog'!

Youknowitsnotthesameasitwas · 19/06/2024 15:11

It was very fast, I’m literally right at the front of shop, rush in, man before me finishes paying, woman behind me being a bored busybody, I hand over my note and out to car

OnAndOnAndonAgain · 19/06/2024 15:11

Some people just like to interfere, I'd have just given her resting bitch face
