Woman telling me to open my car windows

The other day I went to the petrol station with my 6 year old in the car. She’s currently off school as isn’t feeling well and we stopped to get petrol before heading to the Drs.
It’s our local petrol station, a small one. I always park at the pump closest to the large front window where the cashier is, it’s about the same distance as sitting on the sofa and watching tv.
Dd didn’t want to go in as she doesn’t feel well, it was a warm day but because Dd wasn’t feeling well she didn’t want the air con on or windows open. I parked outside and nipped in, being able to see her the whole time. I was behind one man in the queue paying and a woman came in and started asking if it was my child in the car and saying how the car windows should be open. I said to her, it literally takes me less than a minute to come in here and pay. She was still going on about it, at this point I started to feel pissed off and said ‘It’s ok, it’s my daughter, I know what I’m doing, she’s not very well and didn’t want the windows open and I’m just nipping in and out and can see her the whole time, ok?’

Was I in the wrong or was she?

@Magnastorm All of the above but not in U.K.

Someone was concerned then you set her mind at rest.

The Horror

@Magnastorm All of the above but not in U.K.

Well, even somewhere hotter it'll be fine.

Youknowitsnotthesameasitwas · 19/06/2024 15:14

@Magnastorm It was completely fine for that length of time

@OneTC But that’s the thing, I don’t think it was concern, just someone wanting to say something, that was nothing to do with her, it’s my child, I know perfectly well how to look after her

It gets really hot really quickly (at that temp) when I turn off the engine in the car with the windows closed. I bet your daughter started feeling hot before you came back.

The busybody…ness of it really annoyed me..as if I don’t know what I’m doing with my own child, I keep her safe.*

So because you know how to keep your child safe, you assume everyone does. Very naive.

I hope the woman continues to question people who leave their children in cars in case someone less perfect than you doesn't realise it is a problem.

I'm slightly agog and somebody making the effort to observe that not only was your daughter in the car but also that the windows were all shut.

I'd rather someone asked the question than not. You knew the situation, but there have been times where parents have misjudged or not cared or just forgotten and a child has been hurt/died.

In the UK in the last few days? I'd be surprised if it was as warm as 24. I can't remember the last time I saw my car thermometer over 22.

@Reallybadidea I know

Edited

In hotter countries it's been more of a public concern than we have with the yearly excitement about the fact you possibly could maybe die if you were really lucky with the weather.

If this is Australia I'm not surprised if someone said something

sevsal · 19/06/2024 15:21

Honestly, I wouldn't t be too fussed about this. You knew your DD was on under the circumstances but not everybody would, sometimes the interfering body actually has a reasonable point to make and in this instance I wouldn't be annoyed at someone offering potentially life saving advice to people

Youknowitsnotthesameasitwas · 19/06/2024 15:21

@nopestillnotmanagedto Are you ok?

I was replying to her saying she’s agog at somebody noticing a child in the car and the windows being shut?

OP posts:

@nopestillnotmanagedto It wasn’t warmer than 24, in fact, probably less as it’s starting to get warmer in a few days

A car's internal temperature can rise 20 Fahrenheit in 10 minutes. It really is very quick. Busybodies or concerned people? You can see it either way.

Yes, I once watched an horrendous documentary about small children who died in cars because the parents forgot they were in there. It was in the US and has stayed with me. Maybe she watched that.

@saveforthat This is true, but I was in a queue seconds away from the car, watching her

It was very fast, I’m literally right at the front of shop, rush in, man before me finishes paying, woman behind me being a bored busybody, I hand over my note and out to car

And you also had the whole conversation with the woman in that minute??

The woman was not to know how long you'd been there - you can end up stuck in petrol station kiosks for ages if the person in front of you wants to do something complicated or the online system goes down which always seems to happen to me

Youknowitsnotthesameasitwas · 19/06/2024 15:26

@nopestillnotmanagedto Yesssss, I was replying to her post a few before that…🤷🏻‍♀️
