Woman telling me to open my car windows

The other day I went to the petrol station with my 6 year old in the car. She’s currently off school as isn’t feeling well and we stopped to get petrol before heading to the Drs.
It’s our local petrol station, a small one. I always park at the pump closest to the large front window where the cashier is, it’s about the same distance as sitting on the sofa and watching tv.
Dd didn’t want to go in as she doesn’t feel well, it was a warm day but because Dd wasn’t feeling well she didn’t want the air con on or windows open. I parked outside and nipped in, being able to see her the whole time. I was behind one man in the queue paying and a woman came in and started asking if it was my child in the car and saying how the car windows should be open. I said to her, it literally takes me less than a minute to come in here and pay. She was still going on about it, at this point I started to feel pissed off and said ‘It’s ok, it’s my daughter, I know what I’m doing, she’s not very well and didn’t want the windows open and I’m just nipping in and out and can see her the whole time, ok?’

Was I in the wrong or was she?

Well, ynba, would annoy me too. But maybe she had been witness too or had prior experience of some incident where something bad had happened and she is hyper vidulent about tgis particular issue. She was looking out for your daughters wellbeing, so I would just move on and forget about it now

Know-it-alls are a pain in the arse aren't they!

I just tend to stare at them now and not respond or do a deep breath in and walk off.

People need to mind their own freaking business

No, they don't. People should always show concern if they're worried about a vulnerable member of society.

This.

Terrible things happen and people just stand by.

Catxxxxxxxxxx · 24/06/2024 07:35

Well apparently it takes 6 minutes before a dog can die in a car with the windows closed. So if this is the same for humans, you can understand her concerns. What if there was a delay in paying? Presumably you'd have gone back to check and realised you'd been more than a few minutes, but no, when a few minutes can be really dangerous, you shouldn't be so annoyed that someone is checking on your child's welfare

CandiedPrincess · 24/06/2024 07:58

6 minutes? Depends who you ask.

NamelessNancy · 24/06/2024 08:07

Most of a dog's body is covered with fur and unable to sweat. Their temperature regulation is very different to ours. They are also unable to open a window or door for themselves if feeling too warm, unlike most 6 year old humans.

Six mins a long time and presumably, that's in jail very hot temp. One which is unusual in the UK.

I sit in my car most days for about 20 mins at school pick up. Not dead yet!

It takes approx 60 secs to run in and pay for petrol. If there's a huge queue, we wouldn't leave our kids sitting there. We would drag them into they shop .

Or we could just return to the car to retrieve them if something went wrong at the till and it suddenly looked like there was a five min delay out of the blue

Yes, i could have a stroke whilst paying for petrol but i could also have one whilst driving or doing something else whilst in sole charge of a child

People can apply judgement here for their child's safety without random ladies to guide and offer unsolicited advice

She witnessed a child die in a car whilst her mother paid for petrol so now she hangs out at petrol stations saving kids lives

What a hero

🤔

What if mom went in and the petrol station was held up? What if she had a seizure or a heart attack? All manner of things can happen.

If you spend your time torturing yourself about all these remote possibilities, you will never leave the house and will end up keeping hour children prisoners. You could have that seizure or heart attack just as easily whilst driving, to say nothing of the risks of other cars crashing into yours, something falling on your child as he walks along the pavement, someone hitting him when he crosses the road.

I love a good 'someone could have diiiied' thread.

And this is why so many dogs and the occasional child die in cars....children overheat 5 times faster than an adult without being surrounded and warmed more by their car seat. If it's 22 outside it's 32 in the car and hotter around the car seat.
It's the same with people using blankets as sun shades for prams.
It takes 10 mins for 10 degrees fueling a car takes 5 plus a minute paying so the car from 22 is 28 plus while your inside the baby seat hotter. If it's 24 the car will be 30

Electric windows, car locks and most 6 year olds not associating need to take a jumper off if hot because they don't put actions together ....most today can't even get their own shoes on....have you seen how they are Molly coddled....many still in nappies at 5 years old but hey they can work out turning an engine on and lowering a window.

JustMyView13 · 24/06/2024 22:15

If you opened the windows she’d be whiffing in pollution & fumes. You can’t win! My parents never got us out the car at the petrol station, it just wasn’t deemed necessary or safe. Too many moving cars for small people to be walking about.
Think this women would benefit from minding her own business.

I love a good 'someone could have diiiied' thread.

definitely better than a thread where somebody actually could’ve died and the person in charge (who completely missed the simple opportunity to prevent it) goes, “but nobody did die so what’s the fuss about?”

MushMonster · 25/06/2024 06:59

In this particular case, I do not think you did anything wrong, as the car was parked in the petrol station, close to the cashier. If anything happens to you, they would see her. But it would be much safer to leave a window a tad open.
Remember, all this about windows and cars comes from the death of young children trapped in a hot car in an outdoors parking area. The adult just left them to pop into the shops for 5 min. She had an accident or a health problem, now I do not fully temember. She was unconcious and could not say or explain clearly that the children were in the car. Unfortunatelly, nobody spotted the children inside the car, they did not hear them scream. They found them dead by the time health and police services came to understand the adult had children with her.
So, the lady is not so unreasonable. But, in the meantime you are in a well transited area, in full view, it is not so risky. Putting the window just a bit down would help for the children to be heard if anything goes wrong.

Not for me,there's not enough hysteria.

Exactly. People would spot if a car at a petrol pump hadn't moved for 10 minutes

It was surely more about a baby overheating and fitting in the Car not about the adult collapsing
Has anybody seen the ford video on children overheating?

From motherland?! I can't see why I am quoted, but thought it was humourous. 😊
