Woman telling me to open my car windows

Youknowitsnotthesameasitwas · 19/06/2024 14:52

The other day I went to the petrol station with my 6 year old in the car. She’s currently off school as isn’t feeling well and we stopped to get petrol before heading to the Drs.
It’s our local petrol station, a small one. I always park at the pump closest to the large front window where the cashier is, it’s about the same distance as sitting on the sofa and watching tv.
Dd didn’t want to go in as she doesn’t feel well, it was a warm day but because Dd wasn’t feeling well she didn’t want the air con on or windows open. I parked outside and nipped in, being able to see her the whole time. I was behind one man in the queue paying and a woman came in and started asking if it was my child in the car and saying how the car windows should be open. I said to her, it literally takes me less than a minute to come in here and pay. She was still going on about it, at this point I started to feel pissed off and said ‘It’s ok, it’s my daughter, I know what I’m doing, she’s not very well and didn’t want the windows open and I’m just nipping in and out and can see her the whole time, ok?’

Was I in the wrong or was she?

You didn’t do anything wrong but people would rather be over cautious and say something rather than something bad happen to your dd.

Yes, you are a parent with common sense who wants to protect dd but some parents don’t. The person who commented doesn’t know that dd is ill- for all they know the heat in the car is making your dd feel ill.

fieldsofbutterflies · 19/06/2024 15:28

I'd much rather someone showed unnecessary concern than just walked on by and potentially ignored a dangerous situation.

The busybody…ness of it really annoyed me..as if I don’t know what I’m doing with my own child, I keep her safe. Who even says that without a really good reason. I could see it if I saw a child in a locked car for ages with the windows open in the heat, but it was obvious I was just nipping in and was looking out of the window the whole time whilst I was in the queue as I always do

Let it go.

Some people are busybodies. Not your problem.

Assuming your DD is not a dog, she'll be fine in a car without a window open, in the uk, under the shade of a forecourt canopy.

Some people just enjoy sticking their noses in.

Ops said not in uk

@nopestillnotmanagedto Ahh previously banned poster, makes sense 😂

In the UK in the last few days? I'd be surprised if it was as warm as 24. I can't remember the last time I saw my car thermometer over 22.

My car in the Lake District was over 24 a few days ago, it’s overcast at the moment but its still showing 20

like another poster said I’d rather someone was miscast as a busybody than not saying anything at all,

Dogs can die within 15 mins in a car

Evilspiritgin · 19/06/2024 15:41

Mumsnet and this country (uk) is full of people hand wringing, saying why didn’t someone say something, whenever anything bad happens

And peaches go mouldy more quickly in cars.

But the OP left neither a dog nor a peach in the car.

Sometimes, something hits a nerve, perhaps you weren't sure yourself if you should leave her in the car with the windows closed. You then made a split second decision, it turned out fine. What if the "minute" turned into several minutes if the person in front of you asked loads of questions, had a problem with his card etc. Your daughter was safe and this woman may have gone about it with a "busybody" manner but I for one applaud the busybodies of this world as they may one day save a life. It you were completely sure that you did the right thing and just thought the woman was weird, you wouldn't need to come on here for validation.

albapunk · 19/06/2024 15:46

The thermometer in cars shows the outside temperature not the inside. I have a thermometer in my campervan for monitoring it for the dog.

I take it when we go out in the car. I've experimented (minus the dog) and the outside temperature can be 18/19°c and as soon as the engine and air con is off, the in car temperature can easily reach 10°c higher and more.

It's okay for someone to be concerned, and I think your response that your daughter was okay was fine too.

SeaToSki · 19/06/2024 15:49

Your DD was 6 yrs not 6 months correct? If she got hot, she could just open the door a bit or get out.

I understand about people getting worried about small DC who are harnessed into car seats they cant get out of, but DC that are old enough for a full day of school are completely able to handle being too hot when Mum is within eyesight and they are in their own car

we now live in a society where its overrun with busy bodies.. some are well intentioned and some just can't help themselves.

i blame social media.. so many people who now like to run to social media with their 'virtue signalling'.. i did a good thing today i told someone off for locking their child in the boot of their car... because you can guarantee by the time the story makes it too their facebook page it will have been blown totally out of preportion.

ignore ignore ignore... i wouldnt even have given her the time of day

Crystallizedring · 19/06/2024 15:56

She was concerned about your child being in a hot car so rather than letting you pay and go back to her she decided to delay you and give you a lecture? She sounds weird and interfering.
YANBU. I hope your daughter feels better soon.

I disagree. I think most of the SM stories are made up and that the people who do approach others to give (admittedly unsolicited) advice are not usually the sort to post on SM. The type of conversation the OP has described usually start with "an older woman/a woman in their 60s". This is because back then it wasn't considered weird to talk to strangers, especially older women chatting to young mothers. Thinking about maybe she wasn't even sure the child/car was your's and checking a parent was nearby.

If there were child locks on the door, that may not be the case - I can't open the back seat doors in my car from the inside even when the engine is off and the car itself is unlocked.

Pinkbits · 19/06/2024 16:07

People need to mind their own freaking business. Like many, I wouldnt have taken kindly to it. I dare say dog types are even worse and if you'd left your pooch in there there'd be a baying mob with their cameras on.

Not the same scenario but I was at a self self serve in a supermarket recently and as I was scanning discovered a split packet of fresh pineapple I think. I alerted the staff member who offered to grab me a replacement but told her I'd go grab one myself as it wasn't far away and she was the only one on, so she kept half an eye on my partially scanned shopping. In the 30 seconds that it took me the queue had built up and as I returned to the till a man in the queue literally shouted at me in in the most nasty of tones "Oi, there's a queue here". It's fair to say he got a piece of my mind.

Reallybadidea · 19/06/2024 16:10

Has anyone mentioned the potential for the car exploding/being stolen while you were paying? That's usually a worry for the perpetually terrified concerned on these threads.

LlynTegid · 19/06/2024 16:10

Someone showing concern, maybe knows of a child being ill in a car, or even a dog dying in one.

fieldsofbutterflies · 19/06/2024 16:16

No, they don't. People should always show concern if they're worried about a vulnerable member of society.
