I work in food supply chain.
Four of the 'big' grocery retailers have just asked to renegotiate at least four weeks min supply, as opposed to two.
This happened in Feb 2020 as well.
Lots of rhetoric about being on a war footing, from politicos.
And then Sunak essentially jumping ship yesterday, as though he knows there is a crisis on the horizon that he wants no part of.
There is no way that the Tories have a prayer in a July election.
So what do they know that they aren't telling us?

Jeez 16 and 17 year olds may be "easily influenced by their peers" but they have a stake in the future! Raising the voting age to 21 is about as fair as having a cut off at say 75. Why should anyone 75+ have a vote? They have no idea of how the world works these days.
See? Sounds ageist that way round doesn't it? What's the difference? Why is a 70 year old more "worthy" than a 19 year old?

Everyone has a stake in the future, so where should we draw the line when it comes to lowering the voting age?

Or we could just keep it at 18. Who wants to raise it to 21?

Itsrainingten · 26/05/2024 17:19

I'd be happy with 16. They can get a job, start paying taxes at 16. Get married, move out. Seems fair to me. But actually my argument was more in response to a PP who thinks people of 18, 19 and 20 should have the vote taken away from them.
And yes EVERYONE has a stake in the future, of course. But the younger you are, the longer the decisions taken are likely to affect you.

A previous poster on this thread is arguing for the voting age to be raised.

The privileged few have probably already done ccf at school.
Its worth noting it’s those that usually join up full time as well which is why there’s a push for a more multicultural armed forces. A recruitment officer resigned after being told they couldn’t employ white males.

The children of elites may have done CCF, but they were not among the teenage soldiers dying in conflicts like Afghanistan and Iraq. Possible to sign up to the British Army at 16.

Not saying the voting age should be lowered, but it is disturbing teenagers can join the army before they can vote. Maybe 18 for both?

Yeah.. who wants that!! Kids are damaged enough these days without getting PTSD or shot at to boot!

Always better to join the army well post 18.
If you can get a degree in absolutely anything you go in on a higher rank. I have a friend that did a degree in sewing ( can’t remember the full title ) and went in as an officer in the Navy.
As an aside the army have a higher number of servicemen but on the whole are less well trained than Navy or AirForce.

Agree 18 for both

As an aside if you do ccf at school, or elsewhere, and get to NCO rank you also can expect a better chance of going in at a higher level.
Not surprising as you’ve had more training.

It’s National service.
No fighting in a war.
No one’s getting shot at.

Its basically glorified scouts, ccf, d of e with marching and fatigue’s.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Ilovemyshed · 26/05/2024 18:21

I think the voting age should stay as is or rise to 21, I don't believe a younger mind is mature enough to understand the depth of many of the issues. Although to be honest neither are many so called adults.

MPs shouldn't be allowed to take on the job until age 40 min and 20 years or so of industry/ business/ life experience outside of politics.

A 70 year old is definitely no more "worthy" than a 19 year old. But he's had 51 more years of experience. Not the same experiences, but at 70 he's lived through different governments and heard lots of broken promises from all sorts of politicians.....and seen politicians of good intent not being able to deliver on their promises and others breaking promises because it's more convenient.

I agree. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that if anyone is denied a vote on the basis of age, it should be those who are least likely to suffer the consequences. 16/17 year olds are going to be living with the consequences of decisions made by the next government for a lot longer than 80 year olds.

Have you met my bigoted 86 year old neighbour, he lacks insight, intelligence, compassion and knows zero about politics as opposed to my 17 year old studying A level Politics and Economics and more importantly has ideals and cynicism has not become a self fulfilling prophecy!

Snippysocks · 26/05/2024 19:46

Not all old people are bigoted. And not all 17 year olds are as bright and committed as yours. All age groups include clever committed people and all age groups include bigots (think of the Tommy Robinson followers...)

Exactly that.! And most people in the Armed service don’t have PTSD, it’s actually not that common.
The army is actually at peace time now.

In the event of a land war, the professional army would be first , 18 year old conscripts would be quite far down the order.

Its a policy that the conservatives have dreamt up , its highly likely they won’t be in government after July 5th, or atleast hold a majority.

No other party is open to it.

National service is not the scouts it is coerced and you have no choice.
